One should make a personal decision as to what is worth fighting for. If the "man with a gun to your head" tells you to do something that will lead to your ultimate demise, then you had might as well fight. Besides if he is dumb enough to put the gun to your head then he has just removed whatever advantage a ranged weapon had previously granted him.
That's nice to see some proper Aikido which is not just ballroom dancing. Makes me laugh when people call it hard... if it was really that hard, the guy wouldn't get back up. If it were softer, tori would be dead.
good point dude. that's what the comment box IS about.
Your comments were pretty constructive, tho everyone is going to have their opinions on what is a realistic attack. BUT training like this is to hone your reflexes and your mind / body coordination. So when a REAL situation does arise your body will act accordingly.
Guess the hard part is how to prepare for those situations. Everybody thinks it's different.
I could tell you never been in the Bronx where muggers will rob and still stab you for laughs...giving away the wallet is not the problem at all, I will gladly give it away if need be before a knife fight. The real probem is when they say "give me your money and I'm going to kill you" then what? Train for the worse.........if your still not sure about these tech' your welcome to drop by any of the Miyama Ryu Schools and show us how to do it...
This is one of the best representations of aikido I have seen on u-tube. The attacks look defined and realistic. It is good to see other dojos that take a practical approach to the art.
The video shows basic techniques, the more advance levels has many knife strikes from diffferent angles. Don't know what you mean by real street killers, the system works very well against muggers of the South Bronx....
I dont have a Treasure string box, dont even know what it is, But I Have added to My Collection Since Last We Met.This stuff looks Violent, IM from the Peace and Love Generation. Whenever we could Get a Piece, we would make Love!
I said DURING the move, not BEFORE the defense... the main objective of the defense is to get the gun pointed AWAY from you. Nobody should grab the gun and point it towards their heads... that's sucicide.
I can understand that it might be hard to make out the detail at some points, however I assure you that at no time did the tori point the uke's gun at his own head. If you go into a Miyama-ryu dojo, and ask to see the techniques in person I'm sure they would be happy to demonstrate for you.
I've heard great things about Miyama-Ryu. Shihan Rahming used to offer video courses in the 1990's. The demo is more realistic than most and they do move in real time.
I used to go to this dojo back around 1980 as a young kid and I remember I had a sensei named Angel with curly hair and a moustache. Anyone else remember that time? :)
The real danger of this kind of drill arts is that they give you a false sense of security and you can get seriously hurt, and trust me is not the same in real life, keep this choreography stuff for movies.
Your making a statement about an art created by a man who trained with the founder of Aikido, trained in Japan Kodokan Judo and earliest Judo Black Belt in America. Refine this style for over 40 years before he died.
Your making a statement without any idea what your talking about. My guess is that your a fly by night beginner....
Actually im a former brown belt in Miyama Ryu; and besides who is the founder, i realized what was the real deal when i started to train Judo, BJJ and Muay Thai for almost 9 years and then begin to do MMA, so to tell you the truth i respect any martial artist but if you ever try to take a knife from one guy and then fight two other more, probably you can end seriously hurt.
Relating to this, I would have to agree. However, I feel if one were forced to fight a group that is armed, go and retrieve a weapon. Although in all honesty, I would rather try and avoid the situation by running. Not to say I'm a coward, but knowing when you're outnumber and being able to back down is better than diving head first into a pool with no water. So I would have to say I agree with this comment.
A student training in an art should stay until at least BB before moving on, & should not make profound statements with modest knowledge.... he's like the ground digger looking for water but not willing to stay the distant and dig deeper but rather moves to one location to the next without ever hitting water. No one likes a well digger that doesn't complete his job and complains that there's no water to be found. If you're so ashamed of MRJ I can arrange to revoke rank
Look dude, im not ashame of nothing, im just telling one real thing, instead anyone can take my rank, but its impossible to take everything i learned from me, my respects to you and i respect your point of view of besides im not agree with it.
Believe me i spar with big guys everyday and its very difficult to put them out (with no weapons of course) my recommendation is to run like Forrest Gump and stay alive.
Derukugi2 Dont blame the art blame the artist. Youre getting a bit bitter about aikido; why did a little aikidoka beat you up. LOL Leave aikido alone you little pansy. A real martial artist never discrimates nor underestimates. If you do not know what I am talking about, get some martial art lessons, and shut the hell up.

Leave aikido alone. Sounds like you're very bitter against aikido. Why? did a little aikidoka beat you up. A real martial artist do not discriminate nor underestimate any martial art... and if you do not know what I am talking about Get some lessons, read 'the art of war' by Suntzu or the book of the 'five rings' by Musashi.
you dont seem to get the fact the the reason he intentionaly flys threw the air like that, its called ukemi, if he dose not do that then his wrist would snap like a twig. so they cant train anymore unless they know how to take the fall. just because it looks staged dosent mean it wont work in a real fight.
Everyone has a comment of what is better or not, meet the Miyama Ryu Jujutsu artist at the mat then make-up your own mind, but until then you will never know and shouldn't judge.
BBFC, sure, I can get a couple of street guys I know, who will be more than willing to show you haw an experienced street person attacks with weapons, not that B.S. seen in that video.
The difference between this video and real life, is that if a man has a gun to your head you do what he f**king says. No matter what belt you are.

My apologies, I've been corrected as this is jujutsu and not exactly aikido. But that's still how aikido can look like when applied realistically.

the gun defense.. there were a few risky seconds when the gun was actually pointed at the defender during the move... you could be dead...
UnbelieverDrizzt 5 years ago
If the gun was never pointed at the defender, or anyone for that matter then there would not have been an attack, and therefore no need to defend.

By no means does Shinan mean "originator". Shinan is better defined as a style within the KungFu system.

Roughed-up Aikido basically. Totally staged, just like any Aikido demonstration, only with poor posture but a lot of power.
