Link has ALWAYS been left handed. TP wasn't originally for the Wii, thats why it's on both. The Wii version is a mirror image of the (original) Gamecube version.

I don't think it is a stupid idea at all. I can't do it on my own, unfortunately since I am not much of a programmer unless I have a games entire code sitting in front of me, but I'm very sure it is possible to use their texture/distorted appearance on a regular character, but it doesn't look like they have a move set, so actually character swapping is out of the question.
