Because it takes much less space. Plus, the land would have to be sloped at just the right angle for it to slide smoothly in lengthwise.

I think it depends on how big the boat is. Bigger boats get put in backwards. Even though this boat is big, it's not the size of a tanker or a cruise ship.

@Harrygetshreddin If they launched it backwards you'd better have a tug around to catch it because the launched boat would just continue to drift away. Launching sideways on the other hand allows for a cushion of water to act against the side of the boat which means that any chance of it drifting away are zero.
