The movie is great for one reason, it helped with the awareness of an awesome saga. I read all 16 books and wish i could make a TV series from the start to end. The telling of dune would require far more time then a Movie/Miniseries could ofter. Still waiting for God Emperor, one of my favorites.

I've yet to read the books and so view this film on its own merits. Since first seeing it in the '80s I've always enjoyed it as a unique space opera in the canon of cinematic science fiction. The production design & costumes are amazing.

Alejandro Jorodowsky should have made the movie into a 13 hour movie like intended or Ridley Scott who was originally attached to this project to make an 8 hour movie, that would have been fucking epic. But Lynch was a miscast director since he's not a Sci-fi kind of guy and was not happy making the film, he disowned it afterwards. Don't worry, there is a new 3 or possibly 4 part big screen Dune movie coming soon.

@Johnlindsey289 That version is dead. It was set up at Paramount and was only slated to run 2 1/2 hours max. Jorodowsky's an interesting director, but having read about how he wanted to "Jorodowskize" the movie, it's best that it never got made either.

Well maybe New Line/Warner should do the movie and have some great director who is a fan of the books to make a 3 hour movie and make it as 3 or 4 parts to DO it justice than just one and learn from LOTR. Besides, James Cameron's Avatar is the same thing as Dune already as is Star Wars! afterall Cameron was influenced by one of his fave books known as Dune when he did the treatment in 1993 but had to wait until 2004 for the technology. They are similar if you think about it.
