  • I assume you're referring to the last part with the book. It's complicated. You have to do a stability analysis under small perturbations from the rotational axes. It is worked out in most classical mechanics textbooks. An understanding of differential equations will help a lot. In short, when you add a small perturbation to the rotation the middle axis (one with the middle value for moment of inertia) ends up with a negative under the square root when calculating its precession.
