it's all that Atari 800 gaming again... great colours, great pokey sound but absolutely zero sprites performace... just look at that ugly pixelated block that's supposed to be your moon vehicle... people should realize Atari 800 dates back to 1978/79.. what do you expect from this hardware... it cannot measure with HW that was born around 1982 and there's nothing you can do about it unless you are willing to program the machine on a scanline basis, but then.. why not to go for 2600 instead...
@GamesEmotions Haha, yeah, same here. It was quite an accomplishment back then, but after finishing Ninja Gaiden Sigman 2 on Master Ninja mode, my views on what makes a game "difficult" have severely changed.
Well, we all did sometning to piss off our parents. Now the kids use hih-hop music to piss us of. What goes around, comes around. Anyway, I remember that game, and the sounds. It's amazing how memories just instantenously come back. Great 80's!
I had a atari 800xl and loads of games. Great computer but this looks like a pretty bad game tbh.I would of been running back to the computer shop and demanding my money back! (after taping it ;-) )
I have this version on the 5200 and it is exaclty the same......BLOCKY! I actually prefer the Colecovision Prototype. Why does atari make it better on another system.
Tech fact:the 'odd' edges on the screen here would be hidden by the 'overscan' of your TV back in the day...but with LCD and plasma sets+emulators, it shows up, a LOT!
This 800 xl system was a personal computer to correct? I know it allowed you to play games and all but didn't it also allow you to do grown up work on it to? Finally it would still work on a modern computer rught? How do I find games and upgrades for it?
For example 32 bit PSX vs. Atari Jaguar, and in games, it is not the processor that matters the most, data decompression, video, and sound coprocessors are what matters the most, PS1 had processor with a performace less than that of fast 386 but its other chips were more powerful than Pentium MMX, and it had accelerated 3D making it MUCH better than "64-bit" Jaguar.
Or Xbox vs Jaguar or N64, Xbox is 32-bit, but it has almost a decade of improvements making it vastly superiour to these consoles.
newer 8-bit designs were able to even surpass 16-bits because they used modified chip designs with special memory management units that enabled more memory, before then >64 KB memory was usually acessed throgh bank switching, meaning that memory was split into 64 KB blocks that you can acess, but only one at the time.
The reason why early 8-bit systems were worse than newer 16-bit was because the 8-bit chips usually had very slow speed and just 16-bit ADRESS bus (data bus was 8-bit), so they usually just accessed 64 KB of memory max..
Aint it crazy how my mobile phone now has better graphics and sound than this!?
I had the Atari 130XE it had double the amount of memory as the Atari 65XE but there were no games that utilised its full capabilities, do you know why?
Also, can you explain in laymans terms what the number of bits actually mean? All i understood was the more bits the better! But then the Commodore Amiga was a 16bit and the PC Engine was 8 bit - the latter was superior...I'm confused!!!
it is not about "16 bits" bit number just describes how much bits can cpu handle in one chunk, it is a matter of graphics processor
ANTIC and GTIA of Atari 400/800 and later XL and XE were the most powerful graphic subsystem in the 8-bit computers-except for TurboGrafx, which was advertised as
16 bit but its CPU was 8-bit, this proves my point as TurboGrafx had graphics with more colors than Genesis, fluid animation and it was a part of the "16 bit g."capable the same as other 16 bit consoles

The PC Engine had a customised 8-bit CPU (essentially an overclocked 6502 running at 7.19MHz) coupled with a 16-bit graphic processor which featured extremely robust sprite handling. This allowed the machine to compete with even the likes of the Sega Megadrive and Super NES in many respects.
i used to have this one as an cracked tape version,
later on i got the cartridge version wich seemed to have different music.
well not really different but for some reason the tape version missed a lot sound effects in the music.
still the tape version didnt sound out of tune though, so i actually found out when i played the cartridge version that the tape version wasnt 100% right lol.
I want a copy now, just for that nifty scrolling.

Ur Nokia would have been an entire Data-center's floor, in regards to processing power, at the time these machines walked the earth.

Pentium I, MMX, Pro, II, III and IV CPUs are all 32-bit yet it is nonsense that N64 is better than Pentium II, let alone higher 32-bit CPUs.
