You hit the nail on the head with GERALD'S GAME. And ROSE MADDER's pretty bad too. But I really enjoyed the other three on your crap list. I was a King fanatic up until about 10 years ago. I've read over 40 of his books. The real dookie is Gerald's Game, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Desperation, The Regulators, and Mile 81 (this last pile is one of his newest). Of his newer stuff, I found DUMA KEY to be great, and UNDER THE DOME to blow a little.
i think the problem with his writing is that he overwrites. His characterizations are usually good like in It, Stand, Deadzone ( I really cared about these characters), but in his dreadful works like Insomnia, Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Bag of Bones, Regulators, Desperation- I didn't care what happened to these characters. They were so boring that I couldn't get past one third of the book
Interesting list. I've read all of King's books and I've made a list too. Although I think everyone of his books have qualities, there are a few ones that I don't plan on reading again. I didn't care for Clairborn at all. Gerald's Game was so-so. Rose Madder I would have hated, except for Norman, who is one of my favorite villians of all time. I really enjoyed The Tommyknockers , but I know a lot of people who don't like it. To each their own. I loved Needful Things too. Thanks.
I havent read all of Kings books but i thought Dolores Caliborne and Needful things were good. I would agree that the Tommyknockers was terrible and boring.
Tommy Knockers wasn't so bad. Delores Clairborne was marginal. What about the REAL crap? The Regulators, Desperation, Bag of Bones, Under the Dome, Cell.... pretty much everything after Pet Cemetary.
Gerald's Game was totally fucked. I liked the idea a lot. But I had to skip the page describing that bitch slicing her wrist up to lubricate the handcuff. I also disliked the ending very much. It was probably the worst ending. How far-fetched is it that there just happens to be a creep on the prowl with long-ass arms and a disformed face?
The worst book from my favourite author is actually called "Blockade Billy"
Jano is a incompetent dingleberry. Have you even read these books? I think you're 420 time takes up reading time. I agree with your right of having opinions. With all due respect fuck you man, really go fuck yourself with a cactus. Thats just my opinion, take care.
Let me tell you something, Mr. Punk Man. You're a fucking moron. M-O-R-O-N. That spells MOON. Moron. I mean moron. I'd kick you right between the legs if I could.
Why don't people like Needful things? I LOVED Needful things. It is well written & gets a great story over. Ending wasn't the best, but overall great writing and interesting. Definitely not a contender for SK's best book, but easily one of my favorite horror books of all authors I've read.
Yes and it is definitely wayyyy better than Twilight (which I also liked alot)
Okay I'm going to have to dislike this, but not because I have any disagreements or agreements with you, it's because you never included why you didn't like these books in the video. There should at least be an explanation.
Sorry, but poor development, if you are going to list your list favorite and opinionate what you believe to be the worst then you need a valid argument in the video, if there was one in the comments, I'm not going to look because that's just bullshit.
Dolores Claiborne was awesome.... I too did not like some of the others ones you mention like Gerald's game. But that's the genre - situational horror not the book that I hate.

Seriously... I LOVE most of the books in there... The tommyknockers was kind of weird but still great... Gerald's game is one of my favourite.. Dolores Claiborne is kinda long (not in terms of pages but the story's long) ... Needful things was seriously awsome... how the guy could manipulate everyone so they kill eachother... must have taken quite a long thought process... but Rose Maddder.. I started to read it.. never finished.. And you missed one that is seriously the worst .. Dreamcatcher..
@missealexxe I totally agree with you. Tommyknockers was totally weird. I Loved Needful Things, great great book (well the ending kinda let me down some but LOVED it up to then LOL) . Dreamcatcher was the WORST of ALL!!!
I agree with the whole list. The only one I don't know about is Gerald's Game since I haven't read it (although the premise seems interesting). Rose Madder was shit with a capitol it, though. Whats the song, BTW?
I see Stephen king fans are just as goofy as Meyer fans. Kills me how many sub par-shouldn't been published books became 1 best sellers. I agree about "Gerald's game". Unfortunately for me I read that pile of fecal matter in the late 90s. It was the last SK book I read-or will read (too many times I gave his books a pass)
Wow it's crazy how we all differ. I loved each one of those books ESP dolores c but hated Duma kea and liseys story and from a buick 8. Any body else of the same mind?
I've heard alot of people express disdain over King's "Rose Madder" and "Gerald's Game", but I thought both were actually pretty good. Even when King isn't at the top of his game, he's still leaps and bounds above most other writers. Nobody does suspense and terror like King. Nobody. =)
Sometimes Stephen King has some strange books, some stories are a bit too different what a fan is used to, but they're still very good. Stephen King is a brilliant writer and story-teller. No point of having a top-5 of the worst books of his. No, maybe you don't like 'em, maybe you should read them again later or maybe you shouldn't compare it to the movie they make out of the title... for one thing, I do love Tommy Knockers but the film is terrible. Tastes are different!
I enjoyed Needful Things and I thought Rose Madder was an excellent book. I heard somewhere that Gerald's Game started as a short story that was more or less developed into a longer story and I do think it would've been more effective that way. I think Dreamcatcher should be on this list.
i would have to agree, with the acception of needful things wich i found amusing how art mimicks life. very symbolic story. the other 4 i would agree though. waste of time. However that said. King has written how many stories and only a small handfull where a bore. not bad.
Dolores Clairborne and Needful Things were actually pretty good. I liked them. I hated Gerald's Game, Rose Madder, Insomnia, and pretty much every novel after DreamCatcher.
I'm gonna be honest, I didn't like IT. It was too much to process. You had the characters, their lives, plus the scar crap that who had to read 500 pages to get to. I know it's deep, moving, and it's the reason that toilets scare me, but I think it's overrated.
@MrNicMachiavelli I know many, many people love it, but I find it to be too muddled and long. I prefer his short stories to the longer ones. But we're all different.
It's strange that Cell isn't here. I liked it well enough. People call it depressing, but I couldn't get through the bulk of The Stand-yes, I know it's hopeful at the end-because of how damn depressing it was...It was the little boy that killed me.
At least you didn't mention Cell. I've read a few lists like this, and Cell always seems to be right up there. Not sure why: I thought it was a return to form for him in terms of giving us characters to love, making their deaths all the more gut-wrenching. I think your list is pretty right on (except for Needful Things; I quite liked that). I'd be interested to see your opinion of his short story collections. For me, Nightmares and Dreamscapes is his best, and Skeleton Crew his worst.
Gerald's Game was awesome. In my opinion, my least favourite Stephen King book is "The Dead Zone". Dolores Clairborne was pretty good too. Can't match IT or The Cell, but it's still pretty good.

@loneshewolf74 That's a really good point. If your going to criticize a book you should at least state your reasons. I think what he's trying to say by the video is that out of all of them these are some of the worst. There are a lot of people who don't like Gerald's Game.
I cant believe you have Geralds Game in here--Thats one of my favorites-- I think it masterfully addressed topics such as child abuse, fear of restraint, fear of the dark, etc. and how the human mind reacts to such things
Rose Madder I didn't get through; and never got beyond the first fourth of the first Dark Tower book. Dolores Claiborne I haven't read, but the movie is amazing!!
The only one I completely agree with, is Needful Things.
My top for the worst:
The Dark Half
Needful Things
Cell (SUCKED BIG TIME!!)
Everything's Eventual
Ones I didn't finish either: Nightmares and Dreamscapes, The Girl who loved Tom Gordon.
Kings writes good work, and King writes crap, but the one thing that he has which is the most elusive of all is momentum. His momentum will carry his readers through a mediocre work, or several mediocre works, until another good work shows up again. Being prolific can't even bring about momentum; no one knows where it comes from. Or for whom. Or if. Or when.
I love Stephen King,so I disagree with most of the list.Although I will agree The Tommyknockers was one of my least favorites...You forgot From a Buick 88. That should've been #1!
I don't totally agree or disagree with this list. None of these are his best. I've read all of them. I would have put Tommyknockers number one if it was my list only because it wasn't very good and it was pretty long. At least Dolores Clairbourne was not one of his super-long epics. Maybe you didn't like it because its really not a horror boook at all? That and Rose Madder are King's two "man-bashing" books. Funny, how come nobody ever writes about women who are horrible wives??
The DARK HALF would go on my list of worst Stephen King Novels. I haven't read all of his books yet, but THE DARK HALF was a complete bore and struggle to get through. All the other SK books that I have read have been great.
@TheCGIMaster Every single book that Stephen King has published has a Number 1 best seller edition. The dude is a genius, there's no doubt. But out of all the stuff the guy writes, do you really think he's not going to churn out something that not everyone finds good?
@cottoncandy125 agreed. it was the first SK book i ever read at 16 years old. gruesome and graphic. her husband being eaten by a stray dog while she laid handcuffed to the bed. amazing.
How could you not like tommyknockers?...alien spaceship, crazy inventions, psychic phenomena, drunken blackouts, nuclear resistance, violence, conspiracy, etc.....cmon
I haven't read Needful Things in a while, but I thought it was alright (I should read it again, though). But you're right about Rose Madder. I think that may be my least favorite of King's books.
This is quite possibly the worst video I've ever seen on YouTube, terribly opinionated, and just.. terrible. If these books were "godawful" then they wouldn't have sold so well and intrigued the minds of readers so much, now would they? Needful Things was a genius idea, as always from King, Gerald's Game was pretty intense too, none of these books are awful. Have you actually even read them? Or just looked at the covers?
I agree a little bit on 'Needful things' Glad I haven't read the rest. My brother hated Gerald's Game too. I started reading Dol.. Col... and couldn't get pass one or 2 pages. Nice video
I would take out Needful Things (which I really like) and place the book he wrote that mentions the Boston red Sox pitcher's name... Tom So & So (I cannot recall it's name as i write this and don't feel like looking it up) . But I agree that Delores Clairborne & Gerald's Game are his two worst.
@wexy177 Gerald's Game is not one of his bests but it is still a pretty good book. I have never a book more "in touch" with the mind of a mentally ill woman. Even though I am not mentally ill or a woman, it is still a nice change for Stephen King to have such a strong, deep female lead character.
@deekid311 It's about this woman dolores who has an abusive husband and is later accused of murdering him. You can say that's the basic plot to it. If you wanna know more about it you can go to lets say amazon.com and read the basic synopsis to it. And also. I got a video where I taljk about why I dislike these books.
I just was looking at some of your other videos, and saw that you had given some further explanation towards why you disliked those books, so you can just skip my question in the comment I posted prior to this one. lol
Dolores claiborne, rose madder, and gerald's game were three of my favorites along side desperation, pet semetary, and dreamcatcher. I'd like to know more about why you don't like these books. I personally agree with tommy knockers not being one of his best though, it was too long in my opinion and the plot never picked up enough for me. I just couldn't get into it. And I haven't read needful things since I was 11 or so, so I really can't even remember too much about that one.
i dont think ive actually read a book by stephen king that i didnt enjoy, although obviously some are better than others and i gotta agree with you on 1 2 and 3,i loved the tommyknockers and and needful things.
@werytraveler not yet, but i have the drawing of the three. i got it for really cheap, 2 bucks, and i couldn't find the gunslinger there, so i got the drawing of the three. but i won't read it untill i read the gunslinger

Dolores Claiborne is great. Its also a really good movie.

Or if. Or when.

what about liseys story? that was garbage
mddowlin 8 months ago
i thought dolores claiborne was badass.... to each his own though.
umphreak183 8 months ago
I love Stephen King,so I disagree with most of the list.Although I will agree The Tommyknockers was one of my least favorites...You forgot From a Buick 88. That should've been #1!
nodramadrummer 9 months ago
I don't totally agree or disagree with this list. None of these are his best. I've read all of them. I would have put Tommyknockers number one if it was my list only because it wasn't very good and it was pretty long. At least Dolores Clairbourne was not one of his super-long epics. Maybe you didn't like it because its really not a horror boook at all? That and Rose Madder are King's two "man-bashing" books. Funny, how come nobody ever writes about women who are horrible wives??

needful things and rosemaddor are my fav....

The DARK HALF would go on my list of worst Stephen King Novels. I haven't read all of his books yet, but THE DARK HALF was a complete bore and struggle to get through. All the other SK books that I have read have been great.

Has anyone noticed that MOST of these books have "Number 1 Best Seller" At the top?
TheCGIMaster 10 months ago
@TheCGIMaster Every single book that Stephen King has published has a Number 1 best seller edition. The dude is a genius, there's no doubt. But out of all the stuff the guy writes, do you really think he's not going to churn out something that not everyone finds good?

how can you not like needful things?

i think Gerald's Game was an AWESOME book!! it is one of my favorites!!!
cottoncandy125 10 months ago 4
@cottoncandy125 agreed. it was the first SK book i ever read at 16 years old. gruesome and graphic. her husband being eaten by a stray dog while she laid handcuffed to the bed. amazing.
TheBodyJax 5 months ago
@TheBodyJax And how when she finally escapes from the handcuff.. all of her skin goes off... It was disgusting... but in a REALLY good way ;)
missealexxe 4 months ago
and Delores Claiborne?? really? king is awesome but if i had to rate any of his work as the worst, I'd say Christine. wow.

I haven't read Needful Things in a while, but I thought it was alright (I should read it again, though). But you're right about Rose Madder. I think that may be my least favorite of King's books.
anguspage45 10 months ago
I liked Rose Madder!
Haven't read the other 4 yet. I started reading Stephen King a year ago and have gotten through 20 books so far. And he keeps writing more!
*sigh*...I'll never catch up.

The problem with this video is that even bad Stephen King books are above average at worst.
DMoD129 11 months ago
Dolores is not bad :) i liked it...
chiisaXshinigami 11 months ago
This is quite possibly the worst video I've ever seen on YouTube, terribly opinionated, and just.. terrible. If these books were "godawful" then they wouldn't have sold so well and intrigued the minds of readers so much, now would they? Needful Things was a genius idea, as always from King, Gerald's Game was pretty intense too, none of these books are awful. Have you actually even read them? Or just looked at the covers?
nickthewretched 11 months ago
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to put u down or anything, but I'm reading Needful Things and it seems great so far! I'm not even halfway thru, tho!

What???!!! Needful things is one of his best! I don't know what you're talking about.

OMFG! NOT NEEDFUL THINGS!!!! >:(
MahPinkBUNNIE 1 year ago
I would take out Needful Things (which I really like) and place the book he wrote that mentions the Boston red Sox pitcher's name... Tom So & So (I cannot recall it's name as i write this and don't feel like looking it up) . But I agree that Delores Clairborne & Gerald's Game are his two worst.
DuaneMThomas 1 year ago
needful things is in my top 5 and ive read most of king's work. that book is amazing! better than the overhyped the stand in my opinion

And to think I was going to buy Geralds Game off iTunes. Thanks for the heads up dude.
wexy177 1 year ago
@wexy177 Gerald's Game is not one of his bests but it is still a pretty good book. I have never a book more "in touch" with the mind of a mentally ill woman. Even though I am not mentally ill or a woman, it is still a nice change for Stephen King to have such a strong, deep female lead character.
MusicJustin15 1 year ago
@wexy177 Dont take this asshole's word for it. Tommyknockers is a must read. And Dolores Claiborne is quite good.

what was dolores claiborne about? im curious, cuz i never heard of it and i want to know what makes it such a bad book.
deekid311 1 year ago
@deekid311 It's about this woman dolores who has an abusive husband and is later accused of murdering him. You can say that's the basic plot to it. If you wanna know more about it you can go to lets say amazon.com and read the basic synopsis to it. And also. I got a video where I taljk about why I dislike these books.
JanoSeishu420 1 year ago
@deekid311 yea its about a women FIRST accused of murdering a women named vera donovan and then admits she murdered her abusive husband

I just was looking at some of your other videos, and saw that you had given some further explanation towards why you disliked those books, so you can just skip my question in the comment I posted prior to this one. lol
JessicaCorrine 1 year ago
Dolores claiborne, rose madder, and gerald's game were three of my favorites along side desperation, pet semetary, and dreamcatcher. I'd like to know more about why you don't like these books. I personally agree with tommy knockers not being one of his best though, it was too long in my opinion and the plot never picked up enough for me. I just couldn't get into it. And I haven't read needful things since I was 11 or so, so I really can't even remember too much about that one.
JessicaCorrine 1 year ago
I agree with the Tommy Knockers although at least it helped pass the time on a very long bus ride from New Orleans to Kansas City
