  • if your going to criticise, please leave the name of your video, and your name before you go.

  • ESPECTACULAR

  • Why is his F so sharp? Ugh.

  • @awreckingball Is that all you can say? Wynton is one of the greats on the instrument, and he has done so much to keep Jazz alive. Whether his F is sharp or not in this performance is irrelevant. I would like Wynton to criticise your playing (if you play) and let's see how many points he makes about you!

  • @otnas001 Of course it is relevant. If he is indeed such a "great" it should be in tune.

  • @awreckingball oh man.So Coltrane never fluffed a note, Pele never missed a goal, Ali never lost a fight, Michael Johnson never missed a shot..I think you know what I'm trying to say. Like Artie Shaw once said 'If we can achieve perfection, what's left for God?' Just enjoy it man!

  • @otnas001 It's one thing to "fluff" a note, but to consistently play the same note over and over a quarter tone sharp in a legato passage...

  • @awreckingball That's the Blues man. Peace.

  • @awreckingball If you're referring the ending of the song (the last minute or so) he was doing what's called circular breathing. It's when a horn player breathes in through the nose while blowing out through the mouth simultaneously. Something very difficult to do and causes many horn players to go sharp. The side effects of circular breathing are less noticeable when sax players do it.

  • THESE MEN ARE GODS AND THEY NO IT,I NO IT,AND THE REST OF THE WORLD HOTEP BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

  • amazing.

  • NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO @dudepower100 andmnl80980 the mouth piece is not built in its made to look like that and i don't know what all it does but it gives it a better sound. If you don't believe me then go look up the Monette trumpet.

  • This is so beautiful!

  • His tone is deep. He doesn't have to change instruments. This piece does it all.

  • is that like buy a trumpet, with a mouthpiece made in it?.. its a very beautiful trumpet anyways! =)

  • @Shaneybob324

The mouthpiece is integrated into the trumpet to minimize vibration in the horn. All of the other metal around the horn serves the same purpose. It's a Monette trumpet. One of the more technically crafted trumpets one can buy. And as you said very beautiful.

  • John Coltrane: A Love Supreme - Part 4: Psalm. "A Poem to God" The actual words can be found on the inside of the cover. Deep. Check it out. John Coltrane. God Bless the Dead.

  • cool trumpet

  • where is the mouthpiece ?

  • @mnl80980 there isen't one the trumpet has a built in mouthpiece

  • I love you john for ever!!!!

  • ELVIN!

You gave us so much, so much!

  • Part 4: Psalm

  • Paulinho and me in a concert at Cabare Mineiro. Lovely!

  • anyone else notice this sounds a lot like "A love supreme"? love the Trane man, and dig this too, good stuff by Jones / Marsalis

  • really. . . . long live the great Elvin Jones.

  • Wynton played with a monette trumppet with integrated mouthpiece. This is to reduce vibrations whcih can throw him off-tune.

  • LONG LIVE ELVIN

  • Wow woW

  • WHOA is the mouth piece attached to the trumpet already? like the mouthpiece and the trumpet are one :| cool! what type of trumpet is that?

  • @OxKillah It's a Monette. Super expensive though.

  • @OxKillah its not attached to the trumpet.its one you can scerw in

  • that was freaking awesome!!

was that a monette trumpet? or wat is it? it looks cool

  • Absolutely Amazing!!

  • I decided to take your advice and reread.

Going to the Miles and Trane thing...if he were to have "taken a page" from them he would've already been dead from a drug over dose. Instead Wynton took the smarter path, winning 9 grammy's and a pulitzer prize. If anything Wynton's better than them, right?

By the way, I feel the need to ask if you've graduated Jr. High School as well? You're writing is a bit horrific.

  • haha. Dude, you're funny...haha... you make me laugh. But as far as the drug thing, maybe that's the reason he lacks "kool" stage presence.Maybe such experiences tend to lend itself to non-chalant and blase' attitudes that most "kool" jazz musicians exemplify. And who cares about Grammy's.Man that is so dead and mainstream.Only the un-kool like yourself would give value and credence to such so-called awards.

You understand everything i just written smartboy? Or is my writing above your head?

  • haha I get what you're saying. I do agree with you about Grammy's being mainstream, but I can assure you nothing about Wynton's playing is mainstream. It just so happens his music is so great he gets all these awards...and in the real world, these are pretty valuable.

By the way that was my mistake with the "you're"...I'm human and make mistakes. I'm just thankful they aren't as humiliating as yours... from your writing to your beliefs

  • Hey now where start'in to begin to understand each other.. Sometimes things like this take a little time..Agreed?..Anyway I never said Wynton's playing was mainstream..Its far from it..He is the premier trumpet player of our time without question and its good that he did receive his Grammy's which I don't put to much stock in. But God bless him.Bottom line he is great...jus not kool..We all can't be kool..some of us got to be dorks. Not that I'm saying W/M is a dork..Get my drift.? :? )

  • And yes, I did complete Jr. High. But I must ask you again, did you?... And if so did you happen to skip the class when the differences between "your" and "you're" was discussed or was it a concept like many other things that tend to fly over your head? haha :? V

  • no its rubbish, because coltrane if he had known marsalis would have no doubt be greatly pleased with him, a true mark of coltranes character. coltrane had his own issue, he wasnt a nasty or evil or cruel man, coltrane was a great spirit, a loving decent humane beautiful being. he did so much good saxophone and jazz work by the time of his death. he fitted 2 lifetimes into 41yrs. marsalis and no place with them

  • WYNTON WAS NEVER KOOL, sorry to say...He never learned this...should take a page from Miles and Trane. Koolness along with instrumental virtuosity goes hand in hand when performing Jazz and in the former Wynton is much lacking. Sorry, all you Marsalis fans out there.. Branford is far more kooler then his brother.

  • I believe you are quite the dumb ass. Wynton Marsalis defines "koolness" and as well instrumental virtuosity..from his classical to his jazz albums. Listen to his work and do some research before you say anymore ignorant things, prick.

People like you anger me. (You, in referring to people who are not musicians, idiots, and just don't understand this jazz.)

  • Dude calm down....take a chill pill..relax, I didn't say anything about your mama. I anger you? ...geez...are you on anti-depressant? Prozac maybe? If you need to take then take it don't explode over a simple comment that some one posted on You/Tube..I'am a student and lover of jazz most of my life..I've read autobiographies and interviews of jazz arist in all the major jazz journals..I've subscribed to D/Beat Mag. for over 25 years. Its a known fact through-out jazz culture. Wynton is not cool

  • Wynton a jazz virtuoso? Yes he is without out question..But his level of "koolness" is non-existant.. He's never had it and never will attain it..It's not a slight..some people have certain attributes and some don't...hey, it's the stuff that makes the world go round...Everybody cant' be kool..If everybody were it would be boring, now wouldn't it? :? )

  • Lestmbly and pranastc3: you're both obviously not musicians (and if than poor ones); coolness and all this nonsense. Wynton is a great instrumentalist but his musical approach is completely retro, i.e. almost no innovation here. You like it? Enjoy it! That's all there is to it.

  • I never said that Marsalis wasn't a great instrumentalist ...to the contrary, he's one of the better jazz improvisers and instrumentalist existing today...I just made a simple point and analysis..In my humble opinion Wynton is not "kool".Even though he is a great player he's kinda' boring to watch..Sorry he doesn't excite me. The WHOLE jazz persona of "kool" just isn't there. On one hand even though you truely dig what he's playing, on the other hand it kinda' ho-hum..You know what I mean?

  • That's great that you love and have studied jazz that much. However, it's pretty obvious that you still needa continue your studies in jazz...english as well. It's a tad difficult to read unorganized, poorly written, retard thoughts.

By the way, it's apparently not a known fact that Wynton isn't cool. I was born into jazz; my father being a jazz musician and have never heard any such trash.

Please help me understand your reasoning.

  • Dude, again relax, take a deep breath..I thought my reply was quite clear..I don't understand how my reply would be difficult for you to comprehend? I mean you did graduate Jr High School?Maybe you're jus' coming out of your Prozac haze and you didn't quite get what I had said?Let me ask you?Do you understand what I'am saying in this post that you are currently reading? If not then you got problems. But if you do understand, reread my previous comments and maybe it'll sink in :? )

  • mistake below "in the former Wynton is much lacking" Sorry

  • Comment removed

  • This is ok... fantastic if you're going by the music, but I don't think anybody should touch the Love Supreme suite. It's not another tune to play, it's Coltrane's gift to God for guiding him through a dark part in his life. But that's just my opinion.

  • Very True...

  • Let the music live. It is Elvin Jones.

He played A Love Supreme things throughout his career.

  • beautiful trumpet

no tengo mas palabras, algun dia me dare el gusto de tocar con una monette

  • Niepowtarzalny, znakomity Wynton.

  • how do you make that sound from 2:27 - 2:32?

  • serious vibrato, shake the trumpet as well. he might be half valving but i'm not positive, it would be easier to tell but it doesn't show him

  • he shows in 3:45 - 3:48

  • It is not Spiritual. It is Psalm from A Love Supreme. The begin motif(Specifically the first three notes) is the definately similar to Spiritual if not the same. But it is Psalm.

  • Correction first four notes. lol

  • The name of the tune is "Spiritual."

  • Wynton, man... so great! Everyone on this clips sounds amazing!
