Washington and Grant and Lee were all tried and true Eisenhower, Bradley and MacArthur too They will live forevermore till the world is done with war. Then they will close that final door, fading away Old soldiers never die Never die, never die Old soldiers never die They just fade away [Fades] Fade away Fade away Fade away Fade away
Regardless has history remembers it...it is part of my personal history. My sister's boyfriend gave her a 45 rpm album of Vaughn Monroe and I played it more than she did. Both of them are gone now, I was only 11 in 1951 and his voice made me almost want to cry. thank you a million tears
Peace , my Friends , ,, it really does not matter here , who , wrote , who sang , or when ,, it was & is a great song.. Still means alot to so many ~~~
My old Army Instructor for JROTC MSG Don Onley said this, and now I know where he got it from, he is best man I've ever met and ever will meet, he is my hero, I would do anything for that man. He is the best man you could ever know.
Aside from being absolutely out of touch with history or reality - you don't know squat about the song either. The poem was written in the 1930's on behalf of ordinary soldiers of the line - not moneyed officers like McArthur.
ONCE A SOLDIER, ALWAYS A SOLDIER. I was in from 69 to 77. There were good days and there were bad days. I was glad I went through it. I just hope this country doesn't forget we went through, how we sacrificed and what alot of us have to deal with. I remember all my bros, the ones that fell and those of us that came home. I miss them. The bravest men I ever knew
truman was afraid of mcauther he didnt understand mcauther and what he was tryin to do,,,IF truman had let mcauther finish his job and clean up the communest I believe there wouldnt have been a vietnam,,mcauther didnt finish what he started,,,because truman fired him,,mcauther would have cleaned it up,,,I wish douglas mcather could have made it AS PRESIDENT HE WOULD HAVE MADE A GOOD ONE,,,
Since it didn't happen, we have no idea what would have happened if he had his way in Korea or ever became President. It could have been like you think, but then again he could have ended up blowing the world up. But Truman was right on one thing, you can have only one person as Commander In Chief. If you agree with him or not he is the one in charge. Mcauther never under stood this.
Because MacArthur mentioned the song at the end of his farewell address to Congress in April 1951, no less than five versions of this "barracks ballad" were released within two weeks; Vaughn Monroe's recording (with a direct reference to the General) was among the most popular.
This song came about during the Korean War - actually its an old army barracks song. It drew its meaning following the dismissal of General McArthur by Pres. Truman in 1951.

Young soldiers shine their shoes three times a day
Young soldiers go on leave, they know the way
Young soldiers say goodbye, kiss the girls and make them cry
Then the girls all wonder why they fade away
Old soldiers never die
Never die, never die
Old soldiers never die
They just fade away

Privates, they love their beer three times a day
Corporals, they love their stripes, and that ain't hay
Sergeants put you through the mill
They just drill and drill and drill,
And they will drill until they fade away
Old soldiers never die
Never die, never die
Old soldiers never die
They just fade away

Old soldiers never die,
They just fade away
There is an old mess hall not far away
Where we get pork and beans three times a day
Ham and eggs we never see, even when we're on KP
And we are gradually fading away
Old soldiers never die
Never die, never die
Old soldiers never die
They just fade away

British soldiers at that.

@Eideard The only remark about history that was made was that
Vaughns recording was made after McArthur made his farewell speech
to congress and inspired this recording. When the song was written or by who
or about who maybe history but not the history of this recording.

There were 2 American Generals who lived to be 100 years old--General John C. Hines and General James Van Fleet. Both in Wikipedia.
