@Diffomega That's not too unusual, actually. Liszt wrote a transcendental etude in F#, for example. What is uncommon is the piece Alkan wrote in C-Flat!
The violinist's tone sings out like a voice from hell, calling out to the heavens, while the pianist evokes the fiery depths of hell...it's beautiful.
Listening to this piece has changed not only my opinion about Alkan, but also changed my life. I knew Alkan was able to produce incredibly genious and hard music with a good deal of musicality... but i never thought i would find a piece like this among the ones he wrote. This piece is going straight up among my favorites of all times. I've listened to it more than 20 times now and I still get captured by the suspense and beauty. I will recommend this to all my friends.
I had never heard such music before... all of Alkans visions are for me stunning and actually I can't find words for my feelings for the time being... it's simply genious...
great recording, i have it, too. it seems like the pianist didn't really play forte fortissimo from 6:10 on, though, maybe he wanted to play the ornamental notes, which are difficult to play fff, with the same dynamics as the chords. At least that's what i figured as an amateur.
I particularly don't like the title name "Hell". :/

What time signature is this in? I see 6/6... is that it?
Also, how the hell do you conduct this? I've been trying forever to figure this out.
On a side note, I would learn piano just to play this. It is simply beautiful.

The beginning chords sort of remind me of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto.

This reminds me quite a bit of Janacek.

I have to keep revisiting this, I don't know why, it is so hauntingly beautiful.
I know it's a cliche word, but hantingly is so appropriate here.
