@brett500 If you get entanglement and the main fails to deploy the reserve, can you give a sharp tug to the riser the skyhook is attached to, the same as pulling a reserve release cable?
@astrowanabe Honestly, I don't know the Skyhook system that well. So, I would ask a rigger. Bottom line is you shouldn't be relying on an RSL, Skyhook, or any other backup device in getting your reserve out.
Anything is possible in skydiving. If the first reserve (packed by an FAA certified rigger) has a mal, then there is a special cutaway system specifically for that, IN THIS SETUP ONLY. If the second reserve (also packed by an FAA certified rigger) has a mal, then you may need to cut only the necessary lines with a hookknife and hope that gets rid of the mal. Otherwise, you could be SOL, trying to fight off the mal, however you can.
Yea, the better option is to put a ground launch harness under you regular rig and direct bag out of the plane. Then you can release the first canopy and still use your regular main before using an emergency parachute. But.. Whatever floats your boat. -Blue Skies-
A skyhook uses the main canopy as the reserve pilot chute, getting your reserve out a lot quicker than an RSL, which has a lanyard that is hooked up to the reserve cable, pulls on that cable, then pulls the pin out, then your reserve pilot chute comes out. I want to emphasize the fact that nobody should rely on their skyhook or RSL to get the reserve out.
@sergeantdiessel The reserve may or may not deploy, depends on how bad the entanglement is. If it happened to me, I would do whatever I could to make sure the reserve gets fully deployed.
A poor pack job can lead to a mal most of the time. Also, poor maintenance of the parachute and system, as well as bad body position on opening can lead to mals. There can be others, but these are the most common causes.
HAHAHA!! Duh! I feel like such a noob...

@LifeOfCarl Haha! No worries. I try to make it out to Davis every now and then. Maybe I will see you there.

Why did you guys land out in the fields? I have only been jumping in Davis for about a year, so things may have been different then. Just curious!

@LifeOfCarl ...because we were landing near the cutaway canopy.

the realese is quick but the reserve is slowly inflatind... isn´t it?!

Correct!
brett500 2 years ago
its cuz the slider is there right? jumping with skyhook and slider down would be a ridiculously fast opening.
n8032 2 years ago
@n8032 And not good for your health if you had to deploy your reserve at terminal ;-)

Man that is a quick reserve deployment!

What are you supposed to do if the reserve doesn't work? Can you throw that belly reserve into a lineover?

How is a sky hook different than a RSL???

Is a real malfuction always the cause of a mistake in the packjob or are there more things involved? Nice vid btw!!

Tnx for the quick reply! I'd like to know a lot of this things. Probably start skydiving in a year or 2 and when I have some more money :)... Greetz
