  • If...and I do mean, IF i was to have yanked it to this video...would anybody judge me? :-D HAHAHA! Chris Thile is amazing...Noam Pikelny is just as much!

  • Chris Thile is a LEGEND, but so is Jon Brion. So. Good.

  • This guys gonna be huge soon...get his autograph as quick as possible

  • Don't know how to make music? Get Chris Thile to do it for you and pretend to be directing him :)

  • that guy at the end is fuckin awesome

  • Around 6:45 they looked all coked up and as if fast-forward xD

  • New Punch Brothers album out next month!

  • that the song from Step Brothers with Will Ferrell HAHAHA

  • this sounds like something that should be in the soundtrack for the show "Dexter"...maybe it is?

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Unbelievable virtuoso. Genius

  • are either of those two giving improv classes? Please can I have one???????

  • tag "Jon brion" on this!

  • mamma mia, que capo!

  • I don't get it, so did he play a soundtrack for Step Brothers or what? It almost sounds like it was being recorded as the background music.

  • Wicked s#$t really...

  • This guy is just being MindF##ked by Chris's playing!!

  • Quit No! this should inspire you to still want to play but even better.

  • what style of music would this be considered?

  • @SwampFoxPhotography Not really sure, but to me, much of it reminds me of Django Reinhardt's stuff. Check "Gypsy Jazz".

  • Who else quit playing music after watching this?

  • step brothers

  • Such an amazing score wasted on a piece of shit movie...

  • To say Chris is a "great" mando player is a huge understatement. I'm not sure the right word has been invented yet.

  • this gave me a boner

  • Stop with the best stuff! Just enjoy - and post something truly insightful and worth learning.

  • Every time I get a little tired of playing my mandolin, I just watch this video, and I'm good for another month.

  • True greatness! Seems almost a pity to waste it on a comedy flick. . . Still, a good opportunity for a worthy musician.

  • @jamesnm21 You don't listen to a lot of Punch Brothers do you? While I agree with the Flecktones comment, Punch Brothers are far from marginal; yes there are, for lack of a better term, simpler songs that follow basic chord progressions, the entire first album Punch is a great work unto itself. I would go out on a limb and say all four movements of the Blind Leaving the Blind are at the very LEAST "Brilliant"

watch videos for "Punch Bowl" "Sometimes" "Beekeeper" "Song for a Young Queen" etc...

  • @Mcconntl Lol, no, not really. I have seen them live and my comment mainly reflected that experience. They did some awesome stuff, but some of it I didn't really "get", probably because I don't know them that well. I'll check out the videos.

  • @BattyKellen Certainly the equal to any mandolinist living today. Would like to see him continue to develop this kind of stuff more and do less of the marginal stuff he does with his group Punch Brothers. Kinda like Bela Fleck and the so-so stuff he does with the Flecktones when he's capable of brilliant music, as shown by his numerous collaborations with other musicians.

  • @jamesnm21 "So-so stuff" with the flecktones?!? I'd venture to say you didn't catch them over this past summer.

  • @gblove82 No, unfortunately, and I would have liked to. I liked the original Flecktones very much. Need to pick up their new album with Levy. No disrespect to Punch Brothers, btw, I saw them live and they do some great stuff.

  • Abso f....ing loootelly!!!

  • This is IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE

  • this is just... "OSSOM"! and thoroughly enjoyed the rest after 4:24

  • Sounds a bit Greek - makes me crave a kebab :) I'd go straight to 4.25s to listen

  • Sounds a bit Greek - makes me crave a kebab :)

  • Chris Thile is genius.

  • absolute perfect example of the music coming straight from your heart while enjoying what you do best! brilliant talent~

  • I have determined that I need a mandola.

  • I feel like I spend most of my time watching Chris Thile vids with my chin on the floor.

  • I love being able to watch this video objectively.

  • Un Frikkin Believable. Chris is unreal!

  • a punch brother playing on step brothers PERFECT

  • Is this from the Step Brothers DVD special features? What's the source of this video?

  • Awesome stuff! .but with the TV going in the background around 3:40 ..it was reminiscent of Pink Floyd "The Wall"....cant plan that stuff... :D

  • Simply brilliant.

  • I get to see the man himself in November. Cannot wait!

  • The thing about this mando playing that is so shocking is that the technical aspect is so seemingly effortless the performance is astounding. What a gift.

  • I just want to say that Chris Thile is pure genius. He is brilliant! He makes me want to cry when I watch him. It doesn't matter what he plays, I am always moved.

  • Chris is the best mandolin player on the planet and one of the best musicians.

  • @BattyKellen lol yeah right,not

  • is he playing the mandolin in guitar tuning ? also the mandocello ?

  • @adamhopeless Nope, standard tuning across the board.

  • Whoever uploading this needs a hand shake! Very well done! I can't tell you how many times i rewound and played this back on the blu-ray. You should also upload the bit after this when they start playing the piece from 'Carmen'

  • @intermission Sorry, I know I'm not part of this conversation, but what were they recording for exactly? I heard something about a comedy score, but I couldn't find what it was exactly.

  • @EthanRounds Its for Step Brothers. You must see it ! One of my favourite movies.

  • Beautiful work! Thanks for the upload, Thile is really maturing nicely as an artist.

  • Sometime after 5:15 my brain melted.

  • I can't help but watch this doco whenever I break out the Stepbrothers DVD. These two guys truly are geniuses.

  • Great footage.

  • Jaw dropping. Thile is a monster.

  • @NorthMeetsSouthMusic Thank you for liking this. I might have missed it if you didn't. You gotta love Chis Thile.

  • Holy smokes, Chris Thile and Jon Brion jamming together? Too freakin' cool! Thanks for uploading this!

  • Cant stop watchin this...

  • Wow, I've never seen a mandolin played so...AWESOME! :D

  • Holy Jesus.

Chris is our Paganini, for sure. :P

  • Was this in Stepbrothers?

  • @garter10895 Yes.

  • 5:10-5:15

    8-0

  • yep, in the flesh.

  • Is that Jon Brion?

  • holy crap

  • Epic mandolin player. The other guy seems a bit "special" though.

  • Fuck Yeah!

  • The guy in the white shirt likes it in ze butt. Mandoling guy for president
