This version was nicely done. Your "Mr. Hooper" was spot on. I tried doing my version on a boat but it didn't pan out. I used a friends garage and with the help of some cue cards I was able to do my version of the speech. Again, good job!
You got the first part wrong...but then again, everyone misunderstands what Quint (Robert Shaw) says after the word "Tinian". After the U.S.S. Indianapolis dropped off the parts for the Hiroshima A-bomb, they were to make for Leyte (in Phillipines) after a quick stop at Guam. It was soon after leaving Guam, on it's way to Leyte, that the Indianapolis was torpedoed. So, Quint says: "We was coming back from the island of Tinian to Leyte..."
Great job, pacing was good and its obvious you have a thorough knowledge of the slow and faster points of the scene. Great delivery and extra points just for the spot on Hooper laugh. Amazing. Haha.
Robert Shaw isn't rolling in his grave for two reasons.
1) This kid did a fine job, and was obviously moved by the original scene. I'm sure he would be flattered that people are still touched by this great scene.
2) He was cremated and his ashes were scattered following his death.
Pretty good I must say, besides the missing line, but the way it played out, I couldn't really see the difference. Pretty good, especially how Hooper was played, seemed genuine. Good Job.
nicely done, original and entertaining. i wasn't liking it at first but then I was drawn in by the story of the indi and forgot it was you telling the story I even got the feeling that you were in the bowels os a ship and when the table creaked that added to the illusion. if you do remake it to shake off the haters add sound effects like the creaking of the boat that would add to your brilliant work , overall great job.
Supposedly, Robert Shaw ad libbed the Indianapolis story. They were supposed to mention it in passing, but he went into the whole story, instead, because he was a bit of a history buff.
@andrewxc1335 Naw, it was scripted man. I watched the special edition DVD commentary. In fact the day before this version was shot, he showed up to the set drunk and did a horrible take on it and quite thoroughly embarrassed himself.
@Lowclef robert shaw was given one last chance with this monologue or else he was going to be fired from the film. the writing credits are disputed but many give shaw the credit. either way, a historic moment in cinematic history.
@OmniCosmoTouch Whats so wrong with it anyway? "a lot of it was inaccurate" give me a break! I missed one line "sharks took the rest" and all of a sudden, I suck and Robert Shaw is spinning in his grave? Eff you dude. By the way I'm still waiting on that video reply. What a freakin pot shot poser you are.
I will do soon, need to get a better phone though to upload them.
Look I'm not saying it was terrible, just no emotion, no enthusiasm & a lot of it was inaccurate. If you think thats a brilliant interpretation you are very easily plased if you get my drift. Sorry if I got to you, didn't mean to.
@OmniCosmoTouch I'm just saying I would love to see you do better. Everyone on youtube is so damn critical over the smallest thing I'd just like to see one of you cynical jerkwads put your money where your mouth is. I hear you talkin a lot of trash but you haven't uploaded not one single video of yourself.
@Lowclef FYI, William Hafford Sharp, former seaman on the USS Indianapolis passed away, story came up an hour ago.
May God bless all those brave men.
It was a shame and God will hold to account those who sent no escort and brought the Japanese captain to testify against Indy's captain, which lead to his suicide.
Yo... dont listen to the negatives... you had fun doing it and it came out pretty damn good. I got a job once by doing this scene. The guy just freaked out and said " dude... Im from the Vinyard.. your hired"
wow that was great! :) you even mumbled the words perfectly at the part about forming in tight groups, something about a bottle... to this day i still have no idea what robert shaw actually says
"...we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named "The Battle of Waterloo..."
btw, the monologue Robert Shaw delivered was NOT written. Robert Shaw came up with that on his own and Speilberg liked it. Anyway like I said great performance
Great job recreating one of the best examples of acting (and writing) put on film. You should try it one more time with a little better lighting, and the uneven background noise was a little distracting also. Otherwise-nice acting!
Need more feeling whe doing this. Couldn't understand some of it, you forgot part of it towards the end. You said "So 1100 went into the water 316 come out June the 29th, 1945" It's suppose to have been this.... So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.
I tried to do it like Shaw with the old crusty fisherman voice thats why its not flawless english. And yes i realize i missed the 'sharks took the rest part'. but otherwise i think i did it justice.
Not bad, but your Quint's delivery was a bit too wistful. You need to add a tinge of anger and fear to your voice. Quint has to be reliving it as he is retelling it. That didn't come across. You sound like your telling someone else's story, not your own. Think: ACTING!!! ;)
If I may offer some constructive criticism, you may want to add some more lights for the actors. Also you might want to record the sound separate because you can hear it when the camera changes perspective. May do just all the dialog on one track and the background noise on another to blend it all in.
Really great acting and blocking, though! You have that nailed down!
You nailed everything. Great job. I love when guys who recreate this scene include all the hard to hear ramblings and every little mannerism. Makes it that much better.
The only thing you forgot to say was "the sharks took the rest" ! How could you forgot, man!
Liked the DX opening...haha.
And this was not lip-synced. I hate ignorant people.
Wow - very good. I was skeptical at first, but I think you pulled the scene off, capturing some of the minor nonverbal things he does as well. Very nice job...and like captainchew said, possibly the greatest monologue in movie history.
