At my job, the cost of living increases(COLA) comprises at least 3/4 of our pay raises. Otherwise we have to rely on a lousy 1.2% a year! This is the only administration that froze it on us as well as Social Security retirees. When Obama put the "freeze" on discretionary spending he put 13% of the budget off limits, it's a joke. We don't need bases in 140 countries, they need to protect our borders. Social Security is bankrupt. All that's left is to formally default or to choose default through inflation, both of which will be horrific. Look at the unfunded liabilities for the next 60 years. Setting marginal tax rates high enough to prevent Medicare and Social Security from being cut at all would just be an astounding disaster. That isn't tinkering territory like we've been doing over the last 20 years. That would require massive increases in marginal rates. If you think something along the lines of 90%+ marginal tax rates (which is what you'd need) is even remotely feasible you are insane. You are revising GDP growth trend down by 1-2% at those rates, which is disastrous.

Social security has been broke since the 80's and medicare is limping along behind it. I think phasing it out is the only real option left for either. Why do you think we have such a robust presence in places like Germany, Japan, South Korea and now Iraq? It's called a stratetgic footprint. A powerful military gives us more solid global influence. Sure, we bogged ourselves down in Iraq and that was stupid as hell, but our current infrastructure allows us to be quick and reactive in the event of real emergencies. You know, WWII was only 65 years ago. And the Cold War just ended 20 years ago. People have short memories, and it's very naive to think that these things can't happen again. Americans should be proud they live in a country with a robust military.

You're making the inaccurate assumption that we are in Germany because of WWII. We're not. WWII was the reason we went there, strategic footprint is the reason we've stayed. And anyway, if the US is going to have military bases and forts where soliders live and train -- places like Fort Hood, Fort Benning, etc -- then why not have one in Frankfurt? Because we're not at war? That's like saying we don't need police stations in nice suburbs because there's no crime. You are naive.

At my job, the cost of living increases(COLA) comprises at least 3/4 of our pay raises. Otherwise we have to rely on a lousy 1.2% a year! This is the only administration that froze it on us as well as Social Security retirees. Meanwhile, everything is going up, gas, food, rent, etc. Yet we spend billions on illegals, the drug wars, and other needless programs. Obama needs to get his head out of his ass and wake up!!!! All the other things contributing to the quadrupled(its not 14T yet though) deficit is other bailout commisions signed under the Bush admin, also tax receipt declines of due to the effects of the recession, last minute increases in primary budget categories such as Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, Social Security, and Defense - including the war effort in Afghanistan and Iraq.

When Obama put the "freeze" on discretionary spending he put 13% of the budget off limits, it's a joke. We don't need bases in 140 countries, they need to protect our borders. Setting marginal tax rates high enough to prevent Medicare and Social Security from being cut at all would just be an astounding disaster. That isn't tinkering territory like we've been doing over the last 20 years. That would require massive increases in marginal rates. If you think something along the lines of 90%+ marginal tax rates (which is what you'd need) is even remotely feasible you are insane. You are revising GDP growth trend down by 1-2% at those rates, which is disastrous.

Social security has been broke since the 80's and medicare is limping along behind it. I think phasing it out is the only real option left for either. I do agree with Cenk though, about the military spending. Its out of control and its all because of MONEY. Too many big hands in that cookie jar. I just hope I live to see the day when we have a REAL president. Seriously when was the last time we had a real president?

This is exactly what we said would happen if Obama's health care takeover went through, that, combined with his enormous tax increase, would create an enormous budget deficit of over 1 trillion dollars as of now, and then he would cut medicare and social security. And if you want to tell the family of a dead soldier that you wanted to save money by undercutting our support for him feel free, but no president should ever lower defense spending during a time of war, that is just heartless.

2.The health care bill is basically a set of rules and conditions that health insurance companies have to follow. Anyone who read it would know that.
3. Obama gave all Americans who earn less than $250,000 (95% of the population) a tax cut. So the only ones getting hit by his "massive tax increase" are millionares and corporations.

Cenk, I don't completely disagree with you, but you are often painfully naive about US military issues. Why do you think we have such a robust presence in places like Germany, Japan, South Korea and now Iraq? It's called a stratetgic footprint. It's the same reason McDonald's opens money-losing restaurants in Paris ghettos: coverage = security. Another thing I'll point out: If you trim the military down by 30%, that's a million new people out of work. Does that sound like a good plan?

A powerful military gives us more solid global influence. Sure, we bogged ourselves down in Iraq and that was stupid as hell, but our current infrastructure allows us to be quick and reactive in the event of real emergencies. You know, WWII was only 65 years ago. And the Cold War just ended 20 years ago. People have short memories, and it's very naive to think that these things can't happen again. Americans should be proud they live in a country with a robust military.

And yet the real threats we are facing aren't ones you can defeat with military spending. Iraq showed that. We didn't win the cold war with a superior military. The soviet union's economic system collapsed..it had been collapsing for twenty years. And I doubt that we need to worry about the germans storming the maginot line.

Do you know that in the 18th century one of America's biggest risks was "Port" countries (Algeria, Tunisia, etc) coming to invade us by boat? Today, a country invading the US is unimaginable. Do you think we should leave Germany? Are you so naive to think another Western European invasion can't happen?

You're making the inaccurate assumption that we are in Germany because of WWII. We're not. WWII was the reason we went there, strategic footprint is the reason we've stayed. And anyway, if the US is going to have military bases and forts where soliders live and train -- places like Fort Hood, Fort Benning, etc -- then why not have one in Frankfurt? Because we're not at war? That's like saying we don't need police stations in nice suburbs because there's no crime. You are naive.
