  • After I listen to this song I always chat to a cute waitress. I can get anything I want.....

  • I still reckon its probably their best track.

  • So The Smiths were the best band in the '80s ha ha!!

  • @stev1963hit The Smiths??? are they the ones supporting the Jensens?

  • Cheers Jimmy

  • god love jimmy mcnulty - an inspiration to perennial fuckups the world over :)

  • Great song - can't help but think of Jimmy Mc!

  • Such a sweet accordion intro - like a loverly love song - so sweeeet it melts yer 'eart to hear it - this song reminds me of a moonlit night round midnight with a beautiful college co-ed, a bottle of red wine and perhaps a candle reflecting in her eyes as we load a couple of empty Mickey Big Mouth beers with petro and stuff the rags in the top - grab the candle and pooof - start a party

  • forgot bout this 1,,,i went to see them in brixton academy in the 90 s they sang this 1,,thanx for posting

  • This songs makes me want to get drunk sit in my car and try to drive through a dangerous corner. Twice.

  • Transmetropolitan is the shit! I love the whole red roses album

  • but playing the instrumental thats at the end of this song all day in me crippled head is what gets me through the horrible shit thats always bounding after me the following day

  • well I love the raw unpolished production, but I spose I'm usually well pissed when listeneng

makes me feel like I'm down the pub and the air is thick with smoke and with laughter and yearning

  • raw unfettered genius

  • I'm thinking the 2 dislikes are Ian Paisley & David Trimble!

  • "im looking you in the eye...im not drivin a car tonight...."

  • one problem with the Pogues has always been their production, which is probably why Rum, Sodomy is my favourite since it's the only one I really like the production on. Their songs are gritty and made for drinking and singing along to drunkily on pub tables- they shouldnt be so cleanly produced.

  • I was looking for the book...

  • must mean a lot if you;re from London when u see shittiest bands like Klaxons fuck em we need the pogues back and PUNK back to London's streets motherfuckers

  • The Pogues make me want to drink&have a good time

  • One of my favourite Pogues tunes. easily one of the most underated like the album. Red Roses aint their best but it's still awesome.

VP Wine and Cider till we can hardly think....

    Brilliant.

  • yes but if i should fall from grace is the masterpiece of albums hands down

  • @lovepogues Yes, If I Should Fall From Grace is more 'polished' - if the Pogues could (or should) ever be called that - but Red Roses has such spirit!

  • best pogues song ever......on another note...castello is a twat....cheers for post

  • this town has done us dirty, this town has bled us dry...how true...works just as well for scunthorpe as london...poetry.

  • Red roses is better than Rum, Sodomy.... Shane McGowen at his very best lyrically. Stunning, try waltzing matilda to get you in good form !

  • @inkpink If you're using And The Band Played Waltzing Maltilda as an example of Shane's (admittedly brilliant) lyricism, I've got some bad news for you, it's a classic Australian folk song.

Onto the song, I love it, what an opener. Rakish, fast, bloody knuckled and fun, I play it on my MP3 everytime I go around London (or any large city for that matter, though it doesn't really work with Birmingham)

  • lookin back this and "dark streets" remain two of my absolute favourites. in my west of ireland london upbringing speak. ' mighty fuckeen mighty!" thanks for posting it.

  • To all who say that MacGowan can't sing, or that the playing on their live shows was shambolic, Shane gave the best answer.

"It's good music. Even if it's played badly, it's STILL good music."

    A-men

  • its funny how people say he can not sing... i mean.. i dont want to hear sing shane streams of whiskey like britney spears ... sláinte!

  • its funny how people say he can not sing... i mean.. i dont want to hear sing shane streams of whiskey like britney spears ... sláinte!

  • They're all good. Except maybe, WORMS. Wouldn't have it any other way. Great to see and hear.

  • ...and we'll go where spirits take us, ta heaven or ta hell!

  • ...

  • when ya haven't got a penny boys its all the bloody same, always think of this when i pass St Martins in the Fields crypt, great track, up the Pogues

  • yip ay eyyyy

  • legend full stop .

  • Actually, technically his pitch is just fine. Therefore he can sing. Thats all that matters.

  • Damn straight. I get so sick and tired of the argument that someone can't sing because his or her voice doesn't sound "beautiful" or "pretty", as such alot of people put it.

  • Teenage years of drinking Cider and listening to the pogues in small town ireland, irish music finally making sense, happy days!

  • Irish cider is the shit.

  • @hoppynor Ditto that, ecept it was in Dublin, at the foot of the mountains. Suddenly Irish Trad became the fuckin' coolest, deepest most beautiful music ever. Memories of times gone by only Irish people know about. Punk never sounded better. The first 3 albums are the best book you ever read, the best movie you ever saw and the best music you ever heard, all rolled into one giant bottle of whatever you're having yourself.

  • beautiful

  • The artist may not look good...but that's WHY they make their art, too attract a mate.

  • Fucking GREAT song.

  • When I hear this song, I always think of Jimmy McNulty from The Wire (Season 2 episode 8) when he gets drunk and crashes his car and then picks up that waitress and fucks her brains out. Best show ever made.

Damned good song to make mischief to.

  • haha same here mate

  • F'n Rights

  • @bigfilmhat I'm looking you in the eye: i'm not gonna drive!!! lol

  • @bigfilmhat This song is about living, not watching TV

  • @bigfilmhat A toast to Jimmy McNulty

  • @T33chuLess0n

    The fuck did I do?

  • @bigfilmhat Um........what?

  • maybe singing the song 10000x helps to remember the lyrics

  • how the f@ck does Shane remember all these lyrics?awesome song!the melody in the end kicks ass!

  • Damn good song.

  • I think OzarAntoine has a good taste.

  • this town has bled us dirty, this town has bled us try, we'll be here for a long time and we'll be here to we die.

  • why does he keep saying "going transmetropolitan, FYI" ???

  • he is singing, 'going transmetropolitcan YIP-I-AY'

    regards

  • Yeah, I hear it since I was a baby. My parents are the best!

  • if history taught me one thing, it's the fact that some of the most beautiful songs are made by artist who don't look that good to say the least.

  • Ain't that the truth, the thing is that while he makes great music, he can't technically sing!

  • I dunno about that. Dylan maybe, but shane is definitely in key.

  • Just because his speech is a wee bit slurred doesn't mean he can't sing. If anything makes him a better singer than everybody else, he has to try harder than those other lads who were born with a perfect voice.

  • @tev

there´s fuck all more to add.

  • @prolo67 Quite true quite true indeed.

  • Actually , technically I thenik he CAN'T sing. But thats all part of the charm :)

  • hehe Jimmy McNulty...

  • its amazing isnt it? i felt like absolute death cuz ive jus had my heart broken, and as soon as i put this song on i feel over the moon again ;):)

  • Remember, no matter how bad life gets, there is always beer.

  • McNulty crashing his car pissed!

    Great song!

  • we've been here for a long time and we'll be here till we die...

  • sublime!

  • a remarkable songwriter

  • such an unbelievably underrated lyricist.

  • this song makes me want to drink fight and fuck

  • in that picture shane looks like a young kid caught stealing or something. Amazing band, love 'em. great inspiration to all irish and punk musicians the world over.

  • what a band, what a man!

  • saw em in brighton back in the day' fucked out ma brain on vod an acid

  • CALL ME , SHANE.

  • saw them 18 times live and counting, yeeeeee ha

  • Quality!

  • The Pogues: Great Band or Greatest Band? You decide.

I also love how modern day punk rockers listen to The Dropkick Murphys without realizing they based their career on ripping off Shane & Co.

  • I wouldnt say ripping off, They have much respect for The Pogues.

The Pogues are madly underated in the punk scene though!

  • rrr891 the correct answer to your question is yes. simply yes.

  • most rockin band ever!!

    sheer excellence!

  • this irish band was the best celtic punk sound of the 80's. I own all there cds by far one of the best songs of many.

  • Shane and the guys sure are a bunch of young 'uns in that pic! Great song!

  • Hey, glad you like it mates !

  • bought the record about 20 years ago,it´s still one of my most precious "ownings" ;)

  • I like to complement the sole who put this together,it reinforces the fact that this music[pogues/macgowan]will be immortal, this song is one of my favourites, its sheer rawness does it for me.makes me want to headbutt someone

  • Haha makes you want to headbutt someone.

  • @argh

i do it everytime i am bleeding listening to this song, but mostly it´s just me i am headbutting;)

  • Happy Weekend Antoine just dropped by to say slainte

    2-milan

    2-vienna

    3-nice

  • yip aye ey yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • red roses is a a classic album, but it was very badly produced, elvis costello shudda done it!

  • In my opinion, Costello did a great job with Rum Sodomy & The Lash, but I prefer Red Roses for Me by far...

  • I myself prefer Rum, Sodomy as well...Take nothing away from Red Roses for me, btu I just think w/ Rum Sodomy and the lash, Shane was at his best with song writing, and the addition of phil chevron made them go from a great band, to the stuff of legend.

  • @OztarAntoine They are both great albums I can't pick one over the other. cheers...

  • @OztarAntoine Yes Rum Sodomy and the last undoubtedly the masterpiece but this album was the pogues at their freshest and most fun.

  • @OztarAntoine i agree with u there,,when u think of if i should fall from grace album,,,all hgr8 albums tho

  • Elvis did tooooo much studio bull

  • @connaught2008 I can't vote that comment down enough. Shane would have gone nuts putting up with Elvis Costello two albums in a row.

  • Nothing better than the pogues...

  • love the music always puts me in a good mood

long live the pogues and shane the legend!!!

  • That record got me drinking:)

was 5 years old then, got me shitting myself as well;)

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL up the Pogues n viva the Lads

  • HAPPY 50TH Shane, heres to many more, have a few for me, slainte n GBU n GB the Lads HAVE A GREAT DAY XXX

  • Went to see them last night, amaaazing. However, this was the first song, Shane walked on, didn't come in on time, then forgot the words and pulled out a piece of paper with them on and started trying to read them off there. Excellent entrance!

  • that is so marvelously shaneo, i love it.

  • Sorry earl mate I marked you incorrectly, meant to give you thumbs up, they're the best band

  • Nothing better than the pogues...

  • yip ay eyyyyyyyyyyy.............
