They felt [Studio bosses] they couldn't deal with having a film that was going to cause religious controversy.' So they stripped key scenes & elements from the final edit just before release.
Bill Donohoe, of the Catholic League for Religious & Civil Rights, called on parents to boycott the film, which worked in the US, however the film still made an incredible $400 million worldwide.

i'm in this film. the first five mins with the kids took three days and dakotas lecture about the cloak took over thitry takes. it was really boring after a while cos they kept on having to wet the floor again.
but i hated how they didn't mention what the gobblers actually were DOING, they skirted all around it...but yet the lion the witch and the wardrobe can blantantly show it's christian references without censorship? what is that about?

As an oxford resident, does anyone else think it's ironic that the so called 'real world' at the beginning with the office buildings around the radcliffe camera is cg'd whereas the so called 'fantasy world' through the rip in space is what oxford looks like anyway! Oxford's pretty much a fantasy world already...
On a further note, I personally believe Dakota was a lovely choice, very much like I imagined Lyra. The only fault I saw was the switching of Billy Costa for the Tony Makarios boy, but maybe they just did that to tone down the amount of side characters. Still, the film was refreshing, a good companion to the book. I only hope they'll consider the sequels because I really want to see Lyra's relationship w/ Will. It was a beautiful thing in the books & would be great to see on film.
Why does everyone hate this film? Honestly. I'm 21 and halfway thru AS and all I see is a beautiful and sad tale about a girl who went to find her friend, betrayed him unintentionally, and then when she found Will she went and apologised to Roger and then fell in love with Will and they couldn't be together. Yes they were battling alongside angels and trying to bring down all authority, but so what, it's a damn book, it's fiction. If you don't like it, don't read it and don't watch it.

Said it all! Everyone has the right to say what they think, and while I was reading the books - and I was very young - I didn't felt and Anti-God feeling on it.
I personally loved the movie, and I had read all three books before seeing it. Yes, it's different from the book, but the general idea is still there, and I still had that magical feeling watching it. The Golden Compass is an amazing movie and a great book!

I love the Dark Material books but I have to be honest, I don't think they could compare to the beauty of the Narnia books. They have important themes, seeing how God died for us. C.S. Lewis is a huge inspiration for me, I'm writing my own books and I probably wouldn't if I haven't read the Narnia book.s But I do love the Golden Compass as well.
I'm pretty sure Dante Alighieri was a Catholic and he wrote the Inferno...(great book by the way)where he travels Hell. He was an intense Catholics and politician

I'm not saying nobody should believe in god cos He gives some people strength. but parts of the bible actually make people hate. and many parts of the bible are completely ignored by christianity and judaism.
Love God by all means, but in order to follow Him does not mean that you have to follow a book compiled by a bunch of random men a couple of thousand years ago.

I love the Dark Material books but I have to be honest, I don't think they could compare to the beauty of the Narnia books. They have important themes, seeing how God died for us. C.S. Lewis is a huge inspiration for me, I'm writing my own books and I probably wouldn't if I haven't read the Narnia book.s But I do love the Golden Compass as well.

I'm pretty sure Dante Alighieri was a Catholic and he wrote the Inferno...(great book by the way)where he travels Hell. He was an intense Catholics and politician

this was a pretty good movie,it was a pitty they had to cut out the religion part...The dvd has 2 1/2 hours ofcut out extras...The beginning forshadows the 2nd book.

This movie is a direct attack on Catholicism. Completely deceptive with hidden agendas against belief in God and the visible Church. The MAGISTERIUM is a reference to the authority of the Catholic Church; and this movie displays this organization as evil for oppressing free thinkers. Completely unfounded; the Catholic Church was instrumental in funding Universities, Jesuit scholars preserved the works of Galileo, monasteries preserved greek philosophy, and founded Hospitals.

So why, in 1663, was Descarte's works placed on the Index of Forbidden Books? He was a Catholic all his life. Yes, your precious religion had an "Index of Forbidden Books" - very democratic! The Catholic Church did not, repeat not, support freethinking. It condemned countless people to misery and oppression, and while some of it's priests were undoubtedly good men, some were paedophiles and some were fascists. This religion, once a succour for the hopeless, lost it's way centuries ago.

Denominations, most anyway, adapt to time. Ask most Catholic priests now, and they will break many stereotypic molds people still place on the "Catholic Church". Like many promote ideas of Evolution because evolution doesn't interfere with the Church. What may have been threats before, are now no longer so. You want faith systems that don't change when reality dawns, look at the Middle Eastern lands where women are treated dismally.

I understand your point about religions evolving, but I was replying to a comment that specifically said, or at least heavily implied, that the Catholic Church encouraged free thinkers. Religions must evolve or die; Islam indeed is at a crossroads. However this evolution often involves a watering down of previously held certainties to fit in with modern sensibilities.

Yes it is about religion and free thinking, it shows exactly how the church works! If you can't see this then your not paying attention. The universities you say the church is funding, are universities that teach their ideals not real scientific ideals. Not to mention the way catholic priest treat little boys, which by the way the church hid for years and are still hiding! That's how your great religion works deceit! If every person bassed their life apon the word of God and followed the lords rules and commandments then the world would be at peace! read the 10 commandments and you will see that if they were followed how good the world would be!!! and just because there are 2 parts nof the bible doesnt mean that one is greater than the other! Right now all over the Western society there is a huge debate going on about the very subject whith which you are refering to! In my country and my city gays are almost nonexistant! but that doesnt stop them becoming involved in society and Christ! there are many GAY ministers preaching to congregations in my city and country!
