It was an item called Preserved Holly, you could use it when mounted to change your mount to a reindeer and it lasted untill you dismounted. The item was used up in the process though and the only way to get the item was to do certain quests at christmas

To put it simply:-

You mount up

You use Preserved Holly

Mount turns into Reindeer

Item is destroyed on use

Mount remains a Reindeer till you dismount
