In Judaism it is taught that if a vow causes one to sin (in this case, to sacrifice his daughter) then that vow is an invalid vow. Japheth did not have to keep that vow. When a person vows a vow that causes him hardship, he may go to a court of 3 Jews and have that vow nullified.
Would God, who specifically mentioned that sacrificing one's sons/daughters to deities is an abomination to him be pleased with such a sacrifice?
If you had read carefully, I mentioned that there is provision available in the event that an oath puts a person in hardship fulfilling it. Please read again.
It is debatable whether he actually sacrificed his daughter. She requested to go to the mountain to mourn her virginity. Think about it. What person who is going to become a burnt sacrifice would choose of all things to mourn her virginity. It is taught that she was eventually not sacrificed but dedicated to temple service for the rest of her life and stayed unmarried for that.

it says no where in the Bible that god agreed to jephthah's vow, or that him sacrificing his daughter would be a holy act. Levitical law stated that burnt offerings were not intended for vows but rather for evil's such as repenting of sins. therefore, jephthah's vow was very ignorant and this story cannot show that god condones his sacrifice and doesnt endorse human sacrifice

Also how do you explain people who see objects move but nothing can be seen moving it. I don't mean ghost shows as they can use tricks but people who have witnessed things that cannot be explained logically like a rocking horse or a baby carriage or a rocking chair moving by itself say in their own home or in a old abandoned building. @arecuk1 Ive had my own experience of strange things. Ive seen what most 'christians' would think are angels. When I was young I'd see glowing yellow faces in my room overlooking me. I've heard many strange things and my non religious mother was cured from metastatic cancer quite miraculously. The difference is, I dont jump to a fairy tale to explain something, I leave it as unexplained. Neither do I believe that my hallucinations were angels or God saved my mother. She remains agnostic.
Im not saying theres definitely no God, but the arogance of religious people (not all of them though) who just 'KNOWS'...not only knows that there is a god but knows that its 'this' god...the christian god, the trinity, the virgin mary...they've got it all written down...and they've got absolutely not a shred of evidence for any of it. i believe that faith in God shouldn't be based solely on the bible. God DID give many a "see to believe" opportunity when He sent Jesus to perform miracles and die for us. i always make my stand firmly on my own experiences.
we are living in the New Testament. the argument that God endorses slavery and murder does not apply to us. the believers in the Old Testament were bound to God in blood, hence the sacrifices. After Jesus Christ, Gentiles, such as us, were just given the access to eternal life in Christ. as for morals and ethics, we as humans developed these over thousands of years. what we morally have a problem with now, we could be indifferent to in the future, and vice versa. God however, never changes.

And voluntary slavery, lol, you really think that was all the people enslaved during biblical times? even that would be considered immoral by today's standards. @TheMichlink Foreign slaves were hot sellers, native Israelites could get realized earlier, 'cus you know, god's cool with them. The OT actually encourages slavery. How many times did they pillage other tribes and keep their children for slaves and women for wives? A lot. Lev. talks about foreign slave trade, look it up!! *No where* in the bible does it say someone will be executed for selling or buying a slave, nice try...you can however be executed for selling someone else's slave Exodus 21.16
@TheMichlink and keep reading down that chapter to see how if you beat your slave to death, but he lingers for a few days, you don't need to be punished. Basically selling stollen property (a slave) is somehow worse than killing your own slave. Messed. Up. That's your god. In Judaism it is taught that if a vow causes one to sin (in this case, to sacrifice his daughter) then that vow is an invalid vow. Japheth did not have to keep that vow. When a person vows a vow that causes him hardship, he may go to a court of 3 Jews and have that vow nullified.

What person who is going to become a burnt sacrifice would choose of all things to mourn her virginity. Our minds cant comprehend eternity so the easy way out is to just say "someone made it". But how is that any different than people believing the world was flat hundreds of years ago? @jwardmagic If everthing always existed then it seems to me that man would have always existed so there is no reason for a big bang or evolution to be real if that is the case. Im not sure what logic you are talking about. If most scientists say a big bang happened that tells me that something caused the big bang so what was the cause? You tell me im wrong but you have no alternatives except theories that have not been proven contrary to what some people say or think.

Thats why you cant understand infinity without man...And its funny you acuse me of having nothing but theories, when infact 'God' can't be proven either. Superstring theory for instance and M theory seem more likely that 'God'. That the singularity was actualy caused by the collision of two parallel universes in a sea of them (very simply put). But who knows! Im not claiming to know.

@jwardmagic I would bet that many eye witnesses throughout history who saw miracles occur would beg to differ with you. Also how do you explain people who see objects move but nothing can be seen moving it. I don't mean ghost shows as they can use tricks but people who have witnessed things that cannot be explained logically like a rocking horse or a baby carriage or a rocking chair moving by itself say in their own home or in a old abandoned building. What explains these things.

@arecuk1 Ive had my own experience of strange things. Ive seen what most 'christians' would think are angels. When I was young I'd see glowing yellow faces in my room overlooking me. I've heard many strange things and my non religious mother was cured from metastatic cancer quite miraculously. The difference is, I dont jump to a fairy tale to explain something, I leave it as unexplained. Neither do I believe that my hallucinations were angels or God saved my mother. She remains agnostic.

@jwardmagic What is worse is teaching children things we simply have proven are not true. There are some people that still believe that the earth is balanced on the back of an elephant, there are some that still believe the earth is flat...some might believe the moon is made of cheese, or that the sun orbits around the earth...but we know thats just not true anymore. And to teach young people things that we know are not true anymore such as creationism is tantamout to abuse of young people

After Jesus, it is explained that we are rewarded in heaven based on our obedience to Jesus's 2 commandments, and our endeavor to be more CHristlike; we can be saved and still not have a reward in heaven if we continue to act immorally. whether we agree with God's moral standards or not, thats just the way things are. at the end of the day, God holds the key to heaven, not us. we can waste our time debating and trying to win arguments, but if we dont obey Him, we're going to hell anyway.

we are living in the New Testament. the argument that God endorses slavery and murder does not apply to us. the believers in the Old Testament were bound to God in blood, hence the sacrifices. After Jesus Christ, Gentiles, such as us, were just given the access to eternal life in Christ. as for morals and ethics, we as humans developed these over thousands of years. what we morally have a problem with now, we could be indifferent to in the future, and vice versa. God however, never changes.

I love it when these callers get completely out classed against theses guys. You know just before they called in they thought there was no way the arguements they were taught and practiced in their church or on T.V. were airtight. The callers were thinking " I'm gonna turn their faulty logic into a heaping pile of shit for everybody on T.V. to see and I'll be a hero at my church'.
Then when it's all over it looks like a 19 year old Mike Tyson against one of those guys he KO's in twenty seconds.

@sirrtee I totally agree, and heres the kicker, I'm Christian. My belief is based on evidence and i can argue my belief with evidence. I think that it is a shame that they take their belief on "blind faith". Some of them even believe that science is the enemy! (far from the truth) I particularly hate circular reasoning(which i have found athiests tend to use just as much of as Christians)

@gdhgfjf I'm not too sure whether Matt even mention the book of leviticus? :) The idea that God or Christianity encourages or approves of slavery is shown to be false. In fact, anybody who was caught selling another person into slavery was to be executed.

@gdhgfjf However, since voluntary slavery was widely practiced during biblical times, the Bible proscribes laws to protect the lives and health of slaves. Paul, the author of many of the New Testament writings, virtually ordered the Christian Philemon to release his Christian slave from his service to "do what is proper". In addition, numerous verses from the New Testament show that God values slaves as much as any free person and is not partial to anyone's standing before other people.

@TheMichlink clearly he didn't value slaves as much as free people or he would have said FREE them all. Colossians 3:22. And voluntary slavery, lol, you really think that was all the people enslaved during biblical times? even that would be considered immoral by today's standards. If slavery was so important why didn't Jesus address it? Matt did mention the 600 and something laws that are in the old testament, Deuteronomy 22:28-29, that's my personal favorite, god sanctioned rape :D

@TheMichlink Foreign slaves were hot sellers, native Israelites could get realized earlier, 'cus you know, god's cool with them. The OT actually encourages slavery. How many times did they pillage other tribes and keep their children for slaves and women for wives? A lot. Lev. talks about foreign slave trade, look it up!! *No where* in the bible does it say someone will be executed for selling or buying a slave, nice try...you can however be executed for selling someone else's slave Exodus 21.16

@TheMichlink and keep reading down that chapter to see how if you beat your slave to death, but he lingers for a few days, you don't need to be punished. Basically selling stollen property (a slave) is somehow worse than killing your own slave. Messed. Up. That's your god. Make as many excuses as you want, rational people can see that the entire bible is immoral, hell is immoral, and so on. I wish you luck in examining your faith objectively, I'm done.
