I do like her as a singer, but not on certain parts of her songs. She often oversings as many R&B singers do. This song should be song in the original interpretation with little derivation. Being a good singer means following music & singing with control, intensity, & tonaility, & not how loud. R&B singers do not properly sing this except Whitney, Diana, & Donna. Not Aretha, Jennifer, Beyonce, Mariah etc for they lack a CLASSIC interpretation throughout all the song vs showing off their voice.
@classanddignity I respect that, people like to bash the singer instead of giving intelligent criticism, Luther Vandross actually sings a great rendition of the national anthem and I think he is the epitome of a singer who sings with control, intensity, and tonality, he made it sound like a romantic ballad.
@T1000Mr Yes, the chance to listen to Luther was delightful. He has such a genuinely sweet spirit that he should have opened up to other cultures/races romantically for they would have openly received him and given him the open, honest, and pure love that he could not find in his community due to the disapproving issues of same-sex relationships in the black community. I believe that love and support would have really sustained that man; he deserved it. Johnny Mathis has a nice version too.
@classanddignity I can't believe you don't think Whitney over sings the National Anthem. Hers is one of if not the best renditions and she stuck to her R&B roots. If Diana sticks with the original interpretation its because of the limitations of her voice. Patti's U.S. Open version back in the 90s is much better. Amazing in fact. If every singer did the some the same, what would be the point. What makes an artist is taking something and doing it their way.
@tychandler Whitney’s version was excellent, like Diana/Donna her pitch, tonality, & control was immaculate, with powerful moments w/o yelling or losing her timbre. Diana is versatile & does not sing every song like that for it is not in her natural spirit, yet she can sing very soulful. All cultures, ages & races take to her which is a testament of her lack of limitations. Patti has a nice voice but it is masked in the yelling when it’s not appropriate & limits her appeal. All are good singers.

I don't like the yodeling she does after her notes, but she sounds good to me here. Much better than the other divas from her decade that attempts to still sing.
She's truly the only one left from her era that still has a singing voice, even if it's not as great as it use to be...she can still sing!
I can remember her performance at the grammys with Christina, Pink, Maya, and Lil Kim....she took them all to school! lol
@richlovespatti2 well i dont hav to deal when i can just turn it everytime she comes on lol. i like patti, but not live, she screams to much an overdoes it
This is real singin this younger generation don't know what real singing is. This was great n powerful took it to church.
