First time I see this trailer of the movie and the character just voices the words that I´ve been saying in my head for about 3 weeks. This kind of things if freaky.. but .. settling in some way.
I searched for this after seeing this wallpaper wallbase. cc/wallpaper/3250 and this reminds me of Miyazaki's work in Studio Ghibli productions, beautiful!
@jrydland For me Shinkais movies are a million times better than any ghibli production. (I'm totally aware of the fact that the comparison isn't possible 1:1 - I based it upon the fact it has to my emotions)
All of the works I've seen by Makoto Shinkai seems to lack anything dramatic (or at least overly dramatic), but the detail and effort of the small, little details he puts into his works draws me in. I'm emotionally moved by everything he does, even if I can't really name why. It's like moving around in a fog, but I'm not particularily willing to leave that uncertain feeling. I love your work, Makoto Shinkai...
Makoto's work seems to capture true love, not just the happy, but the painful, the unbearable suffering brought by true love. The loneliness it brings, and the fear of losing the one you love most. The value of true friendship, and the betrayal of the real world. That's what really gets me, i think.
still 5cm per second is better than this.. of course makoto shinkai did that one too.. but i watched this film and compared the two.. and came up with the conclusion that 5cm per second is far more hurtful than this...
@N2Lucky yeah probably. and because this movie had a happy ending too... not unlike the other one.. 5cm per second left a scar on all of its viewers.. that's the most depressing anime movie i've ever seen at least for me...
@itoumakoto1980 I found that 5 Cm had a sad story but a happy ending. It's really amazing how such a short film could have a large impact on most of it's audience.
@itoumakoto1980 It really depends on your perspective! (I don't want to spoil anyone) but if you pay attention to the last few seconds of the movie, you'll either think that the ending was either sad or happy.
@itoumakoto1980 *SPOILERS* Yeah. It's really sad if you think how they should have been together but couldn't. But it makes me happy how he was able to walk away, thinking "those were some great memories." I believe that you have to be brave to walk away from that, knowing that you'll always have that "what if" for the rest of your life.
It makes me happy to hear that other people might share the same thoughts of this show, and ultimately this culture. I relate only to Japan as a Japanese American, and have decided now that I must live there at all costs.
What a nice story....I'm really shock...*speechless*..Makoto Shinkai..Makoto Shinkai.....Makoto Shinkai you're now my no.1 idol and I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!
a promise they couldn't keep? It sounds like the movie will be so sad. I'm not sure I like the endings of some of his films. Though they speak out of the harsh reality of heart break, and having to move on from them. I'm not sure I like that they are implied to all have this sort of ending. It makes me sad. And I prefer to cry out of happiness. His thoughts and animations hold great talent behind them however- that is what I admire.
this is actually the place promised in our early days about three friends who made a promise to go and see the union tower but they all became enemies. .. the boy and girl 2 main love each oder... she then falls aslleeep 4 a vry lng time cuz havin a dream that cant wake her up.. watch the mvie to learn mre of it cuz im ruining it for every1
Oh I've actually seen this haha I'm so silly. i was watching this thinking "hmmm where is this familiar" like a dumb bell. I've also seen 5 centimeters per second
i know why we watch this it is because it does show the harsh reality of human nature. It shows the things we are afraid to think about.... 0.o... that's deep.
...I'm lol'ing because none of this footage was in the movie. It doesn't even look like the same art style used. The characters look completely different. It's still Makoto's...but it's just so different. I love it.
Makoto Shinkai likes the themes of long distance relationships and unrequieted love. Just watched Voices of a Distant Star and 5 cm per second and I have a feeling of deja vu. Hoping he makes something new in the future.
The only thing I don't like on Makoto Shinkai's animes is the gray cloud that surrounds my heart after watching any of his works. It gets me a feeling of loss.
I know! i feel the same way. His films gives me a strange feeling of mostly sadness. i kind of look at the world difrently after seeing his movies. he must be a genius.
that's exactly why I love his work! not everything has a happy ending, the reality of his stories makes me feel alive, and yes it does give me a feeling of sadness and my chest feels tight, but for some reason makes me appreciate what I have so much more. His work is just beautiful!

@N2Lucky for me it is still sad... and many viewers cried because of that scene... more of 1percent relieving and 99percent heartache.
itoumakoto1980 1 year ago
@N2Lucky 1percent relieving in a sense that he moved on, 99 percent heartache in a sense that they didn't end up together and akari moved on faster.

i saw this movie once and i thought i'd wasted my time.
then i saw it again and i realised that i missed so much the first time.
Makoto Shinkai has an almost perfect rythem in this film, the slowness and the poetic monologues. It finds the beauty in loneliness and silence.

Hmm... Not the best of Shinkai's works, but the one with the best music, no doubt. (Thanks to Tenmon)
I loved the most part of this movie, but it got rather slow the further into it you came. Still awesome work though.

I must say that I loved Tenmon's work in 5cm, especially Distant Everyday Memories. The music in Places Promised is fantastic though, I agree.
