Wow. A lot of Soupy's adult humor went way over my head back then. It's great to see this stuff again now - it makes me appreciate just how well he was able to appeal to kids and adults at the same time.
A lot more ironic than people might think... at one point, Soupy was signed to Motown as a recording artist, and one of the musicians in the Motown "Funk Brothers" rhythm section (Joe Messina) worked on Soupy's ABC show!

I was a huge Soupy fan back in the day. When the network was going to cancel him, I sent them a letter and they answered me back explaining the cancellation. I still have the letter. Nobody does kid's TV the way Soupy did. Okay, Seseme Street is a close second.
Soupy always made me laugh and had great timing! Too bad young people today don't have true talent like he had - no profanity, just simple gems and funny bits. He will be missed

People nowadays don't realize how great live TV comedy was back then. Soupy, Pookie, White Fang, Blacktooth, Peaches and everyone else on the show - I will miss your silliness, your ad libs and your flubs. Laughter is the best gift that can be given, Soupy, and you gave it to us in spades. Thank you so much.

i was born in the 70's so i didnt have the privilage of watching soupy sales. i grew up with the Wallace and Ladmo Show here in Arizona. But as my uncles and father have told me soupy sales was a true genius and for all ages. pure entertianment.

We all knew we were watching something special. All I know is that the shows my kids watch now are half-hour commercials. Most of the hosts of this era didn't care about commercials - imagine that!

In the 50's, we used to watch Soupy when he was still in Detroit. In addition to the kids show at noon, he also had a live late night show which featured a lot of great music ; the humor was definitely more adult but still wacky & off the wall. Our parents usually didn't let us watch it but we could hear them laughing.
A lip-synching lion puppet and a manic host. Didn't take much to entertain us kids in the old days...this looks so innocent and sweet now, even with the double entendres. Still makes me laugh.

I remember Soupy came on around 5 or 6pm in the NYC viewing area. Pookie was always the show-stopper. Pookie used to do "mumbles" by Clark Terry. My mom always got a big kick out of that.
The cast and the crew always seemed to be having a great time doing the show. That's what made it so much fun to watch: they had fun, you had fun! As a nine year old, I had no idea what was going on, but I had a great time watching it. Thanks for the post.
