When I was younger I always thought that religion is something you don't need. My family doesn't show any interest in that so why should I bother? At the same time I felt like it might be something I'd miss all my life and that scared me. Today I know what I believe in, just because I stopped pushing those thoughts to the back of my mind.

my theory of heaven is that it is a dream your body has in the process of dieing..there is nothing wrong with not belonging to organized religion...depending on what holly book you read in this example the holly Qur'an (Judaism/Jewish) Jesus said you do not need to go to a place of worship to believe in Allah (God) and that he was killed because he said the church should be helping people with there money instead of expanding and helping themselves

Is that offer you made for buying your dad's collection still good? Cause I can make that happen. I mean, I'll buy it anyway but getting a T-shirt and your cds for free would be pretty legit.
On a seperate note, I was raised in a Catholic home and when I was a teenager, I even received the Sacrament of Confirmation. At that point though, I was looking for answers. I didn't understand religion. To this day, I can't say that I understand. But I have found spirituality. That's where I'm at now.
I was raised in a Catholic/Universalist household. I used to be Christian until i hit college and studied religions universally (not that Christian School excuse for religion class where they only show the bible) basically to this day i remain a Deist because of my background, however, when it comes to ethics i take a very eastern point of view. Specifically i have a taoist/buddhist/wiccan view of the universe. I believe what we become after death is more scientific, energy completely free.
Watsky i had a similar situation, but I found my answers in a book on taosim, the Tao of Pooh. Buddhism and Taoism pretty much go hand in hand... you should check it out!
I had a very similar incident when I was eight and asked my mom what happened after I died. She said she didn't know and I distinctly remember asking if it was all just blackness and she just said "I don't know I've never been dead before." Very matter of faculty almost joking. That freaked me out for a long time, the whole idea of just being trapped in a vast blackness forever. It still freaks me out and I'm turning twenty next month!
I was raised a Christian. And I've fully believed it for the majority of my life because of the same reason. That there isn't a reason not to believe since it's been what I've always known. For the past year or so I've completely changed in my thinking. I started questioning my religion, and it scares me. I'm stuck between what I'm tending to believe and between wanting to be saved from Hell if there really is God. When I get worried I tell myself I still believe in God. But I don't know if I do
@goathead901 i know EXACTLY what you mean dude, EXACTLY, like its as if i told you what to write about my life hahaha, but dude to get over that shit you just gotta remember, if your doin god things and trying to follow god just to get out of going to hell, then your going to go there anyway, love and purity must not come from threat of consequence, but from not wanting to hurt and do bad things for the simple fact that someone else suffers because of your actions
One of the biggest issues I had about life was the thought that everything comes from something. We came from somewhere, but where? Christians believe that God created all, but according to the previous logic... where did god come from? Some reject God because of this, but I would rather have faith in everything that God has to offer of a better place after death then to have nothing. In return for everything that God has to offer all you have to give to him is Faith in what he stands for...
believe whatever the eff you want! Religion is a huge thing in life, but not the only thing. I believe religion is a personal thing, only to be shared with closest friends and family. don't let what people believe in change your perspective on them.
I'm not afraid of death because I know that God loves me so much that He sent his son to die on the cross so I can be with Him in heaven. Not many people understand, I don't fully understand, but I wish you know of the love that you get. I don't expect you to understand but I'm gonna pray for you. I might look like an idiot writing this but I'm doing it because I want you to be happy.
I think everyone fears the unknown and death...most of my insomnia is because of the thought of the unknown and death...
I technically consider myself Non-denominational. I dont want to be told what to believe in...dont get it twisted, this isnt athiest...just thought I would throw that out there...
I've had those scary feeling about life before as well. I turned to having a relationship with Christ, and I haven't ever regretted it. But, believe me, i'm not gonna hastle you about it, because it's your life. I love the vlogs. keep it up. Much respect.
I don't know whats going to happen when I die (weak agnostic) but the idea that it just ends is hard for some people to grasp. They imagine a vast nothing, but time still passes. The best way to think of it is when you wake up after a long sleep and you don't remember the dream, so thinking back there is no in-between. It might be like that but without waking up. I don't look forward to death, but I look forward to answers.
After 3rd grade I went to therapy for a few months because I was so scared after my Catholic friend told me about the rapture. She basically told me I was going to burn in hell because I didn't go to church.
You weren't the only weird kid who was scarred of death and what happens after...
Almost the exact same thing happened to me. At the beginning of my Junior year, all of the same fears that you talked about just broke open inside of me. I was depressed and had completely checked-out. Up until this point, I had been raised Catholic, but never really explored why I should be. So, I did. I am happier, more hopeful and a better person than I have ever been before. I really do believe that Catholicism saved me. But, that's just my opinion... :)
i agree with you watsky this is the exact kind of thing that i felt to some degree, its lucky for me that im a perfectionist when it comes to improving myself as a person and as soon as i start to feel upset or to worry about this kind of thing i start to question and delve into my own feelings. however i am having other problems recently that i cant seem to resolve. if a person is truly multifaceted then how can one ever really know ones self. its like i know what to improve but not in what way
ur dads cumbersome thing is so cute! i wish i could buy it but my momma wont let but i would totally support u and ur dad!!! and rapping by the way is EPIC and WICKED!!!
I believe that the moment i die, my soul will go to heaven, while my physical body stays on earth. Thats what i believe. Now, being the way i am in my beliefs, i hate it when i see stuff like this because, if what i believe is true, i wont be able to see these other people in heaven, and i hate that thought, knowing they could be suffering in hell. Christianity is the only religion that you do not have to do something to be saved. I hope no one takes this as offensive. I am just saying what i t
I went through all that. My final result was Atheism and it took me years and several transitions to get here. I am okay with it and the idea of death does not scare me. I am perfectly okay with dying and nothing. If you think about it before we were born we have no memories of it and when we die it will be the same. Now I just hope I have a peaceful death. I absolutely agree with him on living in the moment. You literally on have one life so live it to the fullest. There are no 2nd chances.

my fiance deffinitly suffers from that fear as well...he doesn't read much though so I dont think the book will help, but he loves your rap video's so maybe i'll make him watch this one too :)
the same thing happened to me!!! i got worried about time and aging and dying and i got depressed and had to read a ton of frog and toad books to get over it
I like to hear everyones opinions on religion w/o ppl trying to force them on me. You have a very logical way of thinking and I love how your mind works. You seem a little to wise for your age, but wisdom is as wisdom does. And with your background with your parents I think your outcome is just as it was supposed to be. Your the shit and keep up the good work. When I get some cash i will def buy your dads book! Looking foreward to hearing your CD's and sporting your T-shirt!
This really helped me out, Watsky. My entire family is Christian, as are all of my friends, but I haven't believed in God or the Bible or any of that kind of thing for at least three or four years now (since I was 12 or 13). I haven't told anyone I know, and I'm probably not going to (it would just disappoint them), but this made me feel a lot better about what I do and don't believe in. You're the only person I admire who isn't Christian and who wouldn't respect me less for not being the same.
That book, for me, was The Art of Happiness and The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and sleep. I got a tattoo based on the text of it before I was even finished. It made me realize that what we are seeking in life is happiness... and compassion.
Jewish household. I'm Agnostic all the way although I take a bits and pieces of morality and overall philosophical views from all sorts of places. I had and still have the exact same fears. Death on the surface level is okay but when I think deeply about it, it truly scares me. But I think (obviously) that it's part of the human experience to think about death and ultimately accept it or we'd be living in fear of what will eventually come anyway.
every person has their own time of dying i know i'm going to freak some people out with this but not neccessarely all people die at aroung 60 or 70 some actually die really young and actually that is the reason why i tend sometimes to be religous because i don't believe in the after life and that their is heaven and hell of course my religion is defferent but in the consept to me that the reason i believe in an after life is that i see this world as a test and heave is a pass hell is a fail
“They say, and I have reason to believe, that sometimes we are at our most alive when facing the prospect of our own mortality. Maybe that means that if we convince ourselves that we live forever, we never really feel alive at all.”
I was brought up similar in a way to you, my parents always wanted me to make my own decisions on religion, and they themselves were atheist. For a while, i thought i should believe in god, it would be easier and safe, to know that when you die there is some place for you and your loved ones. However no matter how much i tried i couldn't believe in it. Im now atheist and happy, even though i still kinda hope it dosen't all end with death!
@2watsky i just turned 13 and im soo freaked out about death. My family never practices anything and ive never been to church or temple, and my family and i remember me being four crying my eyes out in the car because i realized i was going to die, and i could feel time getting faster around me. i always am going to be freaked out about death.
I'm praying for you watsky. I wish I could reach out and talk to you since I know the answers now. But I don't want to be the type to push my beliefs too strongly on someone. I hope you find the answers and the happiness I have found someday.
@Davidwilson1212 Why can't he find his own answers? No disrespect but there is no logical proof that one belief system is better than another one. You may be right but I'm not the one to say so and neither are you. =] Cheers!
@ValeriyaAviva I know thats why I said I don't want to push my religion on him. Someone like me can help spread the good news, but the person must find Jesus for themselves. Sometimes its hard when I do have logical proof, but it is only the kind of proof I can see myself. This is because God wants to give us a choice and base his relationship with us on faith, not on proof of his existence
I too had an intense fear of death as a child, I can remember if I thought about it for too long and tried to figure it out I'd start to panic and have to push it down. Good stuff man. Really enjoying your Vlogs.
I hear you. Though I was raised in a Christian home and still firmly believe in God, I've always wondered what would happen after life, and I've looked into just about everything. Personally, I think the most "logic" explanation is Christianity in the way i believe because it makes the most sense to me, and it means God created everything, which means he can do everything, so why can't things exist because he made them that way?....yea, I would need more character to explain better :P
The problem with not believing in an afterlife is that many people then think that they must over compensate and perform their idea of judgement on people. So there is excessive violence because they feel that if they dont take matters into their own hands, the person who did wrong first will not get punished. A recipe for disaster i guess? :p
@JamaicanPrince101 interesting point, but should people even be punished or should we have a system that attempts rehabilitate or if not possible capital punishment.
hey watsky i just found this vlog now and bought the book after i watched, estimated arrival said 10-30 days ... lol!! i dont know if your offer is still good but w/e i got your dads book WOOT!
i respect you so much. you make me dig deep into my thoughts and think about things i didnt realize i was avoiding. Also i never realized how blue your eyes were!
i feel the exact same way, I am so relieved I am not the only one that thinks if everyone just lives in the moment and try's to be the best person they can be at that moment the world would be so much better
Hey man, are you still doing the book/shirt and music thing?
Poetry calms me down and chills me out, and your music gets me pumped up during the day and as of three weeks ago, chilling out and smoking a bowl too.
It's a little disturbing when I hear a story from another person that is one I tell other people, complete with simpsons reference, but that's why I think I connect to your material. A funny way I deal with it.is that my future career path has the potential to make me immortal, so I just think about that :)
I was that same weird little kid freaking out about dying. Death and the unknown still kind of freak me out, but I went the religious route, sometimes I think it just exacerbates me not wanting to die and to live forever :)
i will be honest, the first song/poem i heard was pale kid raps fast but since then i have listened to everything i could; "the lonely hearts club","love story","The show goes on" etc... i love your work and the message it sends and i hope to be hear alot more of both your rap and poetry.
I was raised religion wise the same as you. My mom was raised the same and me and is a"believer" and my dad was raised a strict catholic, but does not "believe". My parents have told me now that I am older, they didn't tell me and my siblings their opinions of religion because they wanted us to form our owns, which now I'm thankful for. Kinda cool now and I am the same as you, beliefs wise. So chilll.
iam in lovez with you!!!!! yew tew effin precious!!!! soooooo damn cute!!!! and you music completes me! dont get me started on your eyes!!! oh those things are AMAZING!!!!!! i got this love ,why?, beause because because yea! you kidnapp my boyfriend!!!
@mrpineapple9900 none of that was proof and was so vague nobody knows where to start. But let's see... they don't contradict but there are hundreds of branches of Christianity. The countless contradictory statements made in the Bible. The fact that none of us lived when the Bible was written and don't understand the language and culture in which it was created. We could be interpreting it all wrong. But I'm not trying to start anything. ;)
@2watsky have you ever seen the movie Waking Life. Its great and you can really explore a lot about life through it. I started checking out your stuff after your ERB and I'm really liking it. You seem like a genuinely good guy and very smart. I'm picky when it comes to rap because of all the garbage today, but you poetic style and great use of words is refreshing and easy to listen to. I always believed rap is a mix of poetry/blues, good music and uniqueness. Keep doing what your doing
Thanks for this video. These exact thoughts have been my past year, and you don't know how great it is to finally hear these fears from another person's mouth. Especially loved this: "Wow, our kid is weird." :D My parents "believe", but I think I've somehow always known organized religion wasn't for me. Tried the medication thing... Despised it. I've pretty much come to the same conclusions as you on my own. I'll definitely be hopping over to a bookstore to check these books out. :)
I deal with those same fears and dissatisfaction. I'm more on the side of belief that there is a purpose for our lives and that there is a higher power, although I believe that you should arrive at that conclusion by yourself (don't fake a belief system). It almost feels more important though, that we all can discuss and share and consider each others ideas peacefully. Honestly, I believe it's beneficial. There is a certain humility that I admire in you George that is welcoming. - Nick
Dude i git a book for u called tue Bible you should read it its really amazing and it all really happened. Yes i am probaly gonna get alot of grief for this comment but i dont care. I am a christian and that will never change.
@HatersGonnaHate1110 The 500 eyewitnesses who saw Jesus Christ after he rose from the dead or the fact that there are 40 authors, 66 books, and the fact that it was written over a period of 1500 years. None of the books contradict each other, making me believe that it is the word of God. Oh, and some scientist a while back made a list of 11 things or so that scientifically prove Christianity is a joke, all of which were proven wrong over a period of time. Not trying to start anything btw.
Whoa, you have 500 eyewitness testimonies from two thousand years ago? Incredible!
And if you are actually serious about there being no contradictions in the bible you could go check ProfMTH's youtube series called "Brief Bible Blunders". Good stuff. Then again I don't think you're really serious about there being no contradictions.
I did a quote from your dad's book in my Honors English class... lol

I was brought up similar in a way to you, my parents always wanted me to make my own decisions on religion, and they themselves were atheist. However no matter how much i tried i couldn't believe in it. Im now atheist and happy, even though i still kinda hope it dosen't all end with death!

@Davidwilson1212 Why can't he find his own answers? No disrespect but there is no logical proof that one belief system is better than another one. You may be right but I'm not the one to say so and neither are you. =] Cheers!
ValeriyaAviva 6 months ago
@ValeriyaAviva I know thats why I said I don't want to push my religion on him. Someone like me can help spread the good news, but the person must find Jesus for themselves. Sometimes its hard when I do have logical proof, but it is only the kind of proof I can see myself. This is because God wants to give us a choice and base his relationship with us on faith, not on proof of his existence

JamaicanPrince101 6 months ago
The problem with not believing in an afterlife is that many people then think that they must over compensate and perform their idea of judgement on people. So there is excessive violence because they feel that if they dont take matters into their own hands, the person who did wrong first will not get punished. A recipe for disaster i guess? :p
JamaicanPrince101 6 months ago

- Nick

None of the books contradict each other, making me believe that it is the word of God.
