  • Y'know . . . back in the fifties we had a singalong song for counting from one to ten. It came on a little plastic-laminated cardboard 78 rpm kids' record. It was well-written and professionally done, unlike this effort. Why on earth does all this modern stuff for kids have to be so insulting to everyone's intelligence?

    The technical production is unquestionably not professional, but I can assure you that the concepts covered are totally on target with numbers presented as numerals, objects, and words, with ten-frames, with cuisenaire rods, and with increasing and decreasing numbers. I think, for the price, the viewer can put up with the amateur video.

  • @Grancie48 That's just the problem- the concepts. They're presented in a ham-handed, artless manner that is not conducive to learning or to holding a child's attention. I've seen far too much of this stuff- done with the best of intentions, but absolutely clueless in terms of execution and presentation. It's content without context, and content has to have context in order to have meaning.

    2. Number sense has many more concepts to it than just being able to recite, recognize, or even identify the numerals on a keyboard, some of which are addressed in this video's graphics, concepts such as "how many", "more", "less", "one more", "how many more", etc.

    3. Please be respectful of sincere attempts to educate small children. They are our future.

  • @Grancie48 Number sense is very much related to understanding the period table and how the elements are arranged in groups (number of valence electrons) and periods (number of shells). Its very difficult to teach 13 year olds this....I have to go back to teaching one more and one less to many ..... everything basic concept we take for granted has many implications for learning future skills....

    You're absolutely right about how understanding more difficult subjects is contingent on acquiring some of the simpler and more basic concepts long before the difficult subjects are introduced. It's easy to underestimate the importance of early childhood education. There certainly is more to number sense than reciting or identifying numerals.

  • my 1 year old niece is to the point where shes just being able to speak, this song put her to sleep as she was listening. Works as a great learning method and lulaby if you need one.

  • The point is not just to RECITE the numbers but to visually see the relationship between the quantities as well as to learn to read the numerals and number words.

  • You might want to start by only counting to three. For example, if he eats Cheerios or Goldfish crackers as a snack, you could count "one,.....two,...... three" as you put them in front of him or in his hand one at a time. That way, he will begin to understand "one-to-one correspondence" and the concept of "one more" as well as the sequence of the numbers.

  • The point is not just to recite the numbers one to ten. It is 1) to read/identify the numerals and words, and the quantities they represent and 2) to develop a concept of their relationships to each other (hence the 10-frame and the graph).

    The songs you remember from school may be as "lame" or "goofy" as this one, but even you admit to remembering them... which is the point. These songs are meant to be instructional aids, not top forty hits.
