  • This is the most beautiful treatment I've ever heard of this music. Besides the tremendous loss to his family and loved ones, his death robbed the world of a voice that really seems limitless and supernatural in its ability to capture emotion while serving the music 100% and without self-indulgence.

  • I heard Warren 'live' many times. The old story- unless you heard him live (in the house) well, i did and it was one of the most gorgeous voices i've ever heard. A big beautiful sound. Forza, Macbeth, Rigoletto, etc. The Forzas with Milanov, Tucker & Warren- i've heard recordings but trust me, "You Hadda be There". I think i heard Warren more than any other baritone. I'm surprised to hear this Wagner recording- i love it.

  • Magnificent, beyond my power to praise!!

  • It is indeed a beautiful voice.

  • Das war wirklich ein ganz Großer. Vielleicht am berührendsten, wenn er mit seinem Mezzavoce zauberte. Wunderbar, all das hier wieder erleben zu können !

  • One of the greatest baritones of all time and the Met Opera House in New York City

was so blessed to him on their roster.

  • Can someone please answer this question? Why does it say on Wikipedia he died during "La Forza del Destino"? Which is correct? Thanks

  • Now I've got to listen to the rest of this performance. This Wolfram is great, and what a loss he has had. A well constructed and executed farewell to two people who mattered the most with a tragic knowledge of exactly why he is losing them. Brilliant. Thank you for posting this!

  • Sublime .

  • MIRACULOUS!!! Thank you for posting!

  • @Kievest -What a range and totally different to Tibbett performance. They are both truly great performances. This one more subtle but equally brilliant. TY.

  • I was working as a waiter that evening and my co-worker had gone to the Old Met to see Warren. He came back early and I asked if it was that bad, or that good. It was then that he informed me that Warren had died during the performance. I worked the rest of the night with tears in my eyes. I saw him many times and to know I would never see him again was pain. Now, thanks to You Tube, many moments can be relived. Thank you, songofscarlet!

  • @hgbrown20001 beautiful story, so amazing that you were there... in NYC at the time

  • voce possente!!!!!!!!!!!fantastica!!!!!!voto 8.

  • Not fantastic even if he had the colour, he never had the style!

  • @monpitt500 I disagree...and who do you suppose did please tell.

  • Un uso del diaframma assolutamente perfetto, come solo i "Grandi "sanno fare... Meraviglioso!!! Caruso suonava così perfetto. Saluti

  • His Majesty has sung.

  • Wow!! This is by far the most gorgeous version I've ever heard of this magnificent aria. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • This man is legend.

  • The Supervoice hasn`t any feeling for Rhythm and Wagners Tempi here, I´m afraid! Anywhere he`s one of the best Baritons I´ve ever heard.

  • @Belcantooliver dramatic interpretation... Wagner would have wanted it this way

  • @Belcantooliver You have no clue. Wagner's tempi? He mark's quarter note = 46 at the beginning and gives us nothing else until the meter change, which simply says the dotted quarter is to equal the half. I challenge you to find me ONE SINGLE RECORDING of this aria in which there is not a tempo change at measure 21 ("Da scheinest du...").

  • @Belcantooliver I agree, unfortunately. But nonetheless a great, great baritone

  • The pianist is supreme as well.

  • Please stop the stupid talk! This is not a soap box for the arrogant!!! This is about MUSIC not ANATOMY.

  • music is all about anatomy, you can't have one without the other.

  • They don't make baritones like this anymore. The size, beauty and control of his voice is unmatched by anyone today. Quite simply one of the best that ever lived! bravo

  • best. abendstern. ever.

  • Agreed!

  • Beautifully sung! Bravo! TY.

  • ... just beautiful singing.

  • Wonderful expression and vocal placement!

  • Holy falsetto coordination into the sound! Thanks for sharing this!

  • This live performance is very different from most of his studio recordings. It's far more musical than many of his commercial recordings. Wish he had sung this way on more of his commercial recordings.

  • Beautiful! There seems to be some very quite violin-like sounds in the background.

  • I know it's annoying... so possibly a recital at a conservatory... where a violin recital was going on next door? I really haven't the slightest. I was hoping no one would notice!

  • Yeah, my headphones are pretty revealing ;-) Its not that distracting though. Thanks for that recording btw, I think I have never heard Warren sing Wagner before.

  • I believe that Warren like Ruffo sang the herald in Lohengin when first starting out.

  • Thanks for the info!

  • This is a baritone. Others cannot even achieve in the studio what he achieved live.
