Hey guys great video, I compete in amateur arm wrestling so I have a lot of unorthodox training regimens but I cant wait to start swinging a hammer. Its looks as though you engage a lot of the same muscle groups that I need to gain strength in. Oh and dont mind the haters hard work pays off.
I'm 15 and an amateur boxer. I'm looking to do the sledgehammer tire thing to increase my strength, but I don't want to bulk up, it won't bulk my arms or shoulders up will it? Thanks.
@Acechao111 I have been doing sledge hammer workouts for the better half of a year and i havent noticed any mass gain. mind you i dont eat like a horse. i have also noticed a great deal more definition than what i had with free weights (i still do those too)
Awesome, this is great fun if you whack in the Rocky soundtrack and turn it up loud. Also builds a highly functional skill for when your dickhead neighbour parks his shitty escort bodykit wankmobile in your parking space for the 50th fucking time......
why not do something useful with this workout. give these kids an 8lb splitting maul and a few cords of wood to split. strength and coordination in that workout.
There is a proper way to swing the hammer! U should have turned the music off and actually TAUGHT something rather than showing rep after rep of the same damn thing. There are different grip options (hands together, hands apart etc) Just some advice
These kids do a great job with the full range of motion in using the sledge hammer. In my experience if done properly it SERIOUSLY engages the core and pans out from there. I also do the deceleration training. A lot of weight trainers think I'm silly using a low weight object to build muscle, but they fail to take into account the leverage and inertia aspect of swinging around a hammer like that. Very nice vid!
Thanks! It is a fully body workout, but here are the primary muscle groups - Core, shoulders, back (reloading the hammer), hands and forearms, as well as the legs for bracing. I will incorporate it in our programs mostly on upper body days near the end of a workout - Joe
wow...nice exercises... I must get a smaller hammer...so I can try this! this one arm swings looke great!!! but this exercise explode and stop...I never see that before...
Its a full body workout, but it works everything in the Arms, especially the forearms. It also works your ab's . You don't need a large tractor tire, a tire off a semi truck will work also,
What size hammer is that? What's the biggest you'd recommend? (Basically, I have a 20# and I'm wondering if you think it's too big. I also have a 6 or 8). Maybe do regular swings w/ the 20 and decels with the smaller one?
I'd definately go with the 6 or 8. It is an explosive exercise, so the speed you can move the hammer, not the weight, is important. Ours is an 8 lb and we use a baseball bat warm-up ring to add a few extra lbs for some of the boys.
I love those exercises, this + kettlebells and bulgarian bag makes incredible work

My gym has a tire and sledgehammers. It's a great workout! Have you ever seen pics of the old time lumberjacks? They were massive.

@redmistify training outside gym is more difficult and it gives more

@KevinWood44 haha, it was just a video to show guys working out. I figured most people can get the picture from watching the reps.
Although some people would rather complain....

does this like legit work? or do you need to do a lot of other work outs on top of this?

redfootninja 1 year ago
You don't need a tire big like that. Small tires alone or tied together will also do marvels to your muscles.

where can i get a tire of that size?
how much $?

whats the weigh of hammer?
DjokicaKPZ 2 years ago
they are 8's and 10's. The weight should be low as it is a dynamic movement.

You don't need a huge wheel, but with a huge wheel you can't miss like I do.Where can I find one of those tires?
Frankensnizzle 2 years ago
Usually just check your phone book for local tractor tire stores - most give them away.
jhashey 2 years ago
Thanx dude!

I want a tire too since I bought a 6lbs sledgehammer for that purpose. Well just for stress relief.

Ha, it is huge, but you don't need it. You can get a regular old tire from most garages for free and hit it. Thanks for the comment!
