  • Saw the Reels support INXS in Canberra in 84, Dave Mason appeared in a bottle green leather corset, suspenders - the whole bit. Seriously creepy! Wasn't overly impressed with the performance either.

  • Great cover, very underrated band, had some good ideas and some good songs, petty we don't praise our own artist here in Australia.

  • what a lovely understated version, inspired perhaps by a different sort of herb . . . and a video that ramps up the cheese factor to 11, but done with much love and care.

  • yes at the time of fame his dad was a politician and he received so much publicity,AND I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WATCH THEM LIVE AT SYDNEY COVE TAVERN ALL OF THOSE YEARS AGO

  • what was sad about the reels is that they weren't taken to serious,as you can see by the small amount of people who have viewed there songs, these guys had plenty of talent and they were great to listen and dance to,but could not get that big impact that they really deserved, very underrated.

  • BEAUTIFUL:D

  • hi unreel the album contains this song and is available the track appeared on the beautiful album by 1982

  • OK, for those of you that think this is the best version ever

    1. The video = FAIL

2, The singer, IMHO, sounds like he is bored, uninspired, and not In Love with this song.

    3. Leave the Brass to Herb.

    Herb Alpert

    Faith No More

    Burt Bacharach

    In that order

  • their cover of Bad Moon Rising is also great.

  • Best version of the song ever recorded - the album was the only thing of value K-Tel ever produced. Used to catch the band at the Bridge Hotel in Mordialloc on a regular basis.

@adehmark - I have been hunting for a copy of Beautiful for years without success as my copy disappeared a long time ago in one of a number of house moves

  • I saw these guys when I was a kid in the early 80's at St George Soccer club and don't get me wrong I liked a few of their songs but I saw a lot of bands back then and they were quite different as on stage they used to have this big wheel to wheel tape player up with them doing back ground. In a time of live music and with all respect they were indeed very live it was unusual. Just a bit of trivia

  • strange I prefere this to the original

  • @subsea1234 Yeah me too,is it because it has a slightly slower tempo?

  • OMG..cannot believe I found this clip!! This is my Wedding Song, back in 1986..wow. My husband and I LOVED this version by The Reels..thks for the u/l

  • What a great rendition of this song! Beats anything else I've heard.

  • that makes him your great uncle....i think :)

  • the keyboardist colin newham, is my granddads brother, whatever that makes him to me, (:

    love their music. ♥

  • Herb he isnt, but thanks for bringing this song back to us

  • Herb Alpert he ain't!

  • A good songwriter in his own right he is... shame the cover was his biggest hit

  • Thanks for your musics

Ive worn out three CDs listening to them

Have they reformed and where are they playing?????????????????

  • the Reels are reforming and playing in Dungog - next wekeend!

  • Ahh I used to love seeing the Reels by Candlelight every December at the Club in Collingwood in the late 80s!

  • prob one of the best bands australia has ever produced... totally underated...

i use to fall to sleep with this vinyl when i was 3 years old

im 22 now... all the ppl jumping on the electro wagon now should take notice of this band and the church... everything you think your nu age about, this band started it all... have a nice day youtube..

i beleive this song has more feeling than the original, but hey who am i to know ;)

  • This song really touched me when I was 12 years old going on 13. Remember seeing the video clip back then too. With all respect for the original, this is by far the most beautiful version. The Reels are a fantastic group.

  • this group is the best thing to ever come out of Dubbo

  • @yindyamarra I thought the best thing to come out of Dubbo was the Highway : )

  • awesome version of a classic song. the reels were such a good feeling band. in an era when it was cool to have fun instead of miserable gangsta rapping like today. happy is good = the reels :o)

  • A perfect song for those who are in love.Thank you Dennis for sharing.. Smile and send my hello and kisses to ur family.

  • When this ballad came out in 1982, The Reels had split in two with the sudden departures of Karen Ansell and Paul Abrahams (Colin Newham had left previously). David Mason, Craig Hooper and Stephan Fidock were left to go along as a trio with the addition of a tape recorder for live shows. Now I just wish the six would all be back together again!

  • they are back giging around now mate.

  • Thank you for posting this. I've looked everywhere for a digital copy of 'Beautiful' one of my all-time favourite albums, that I have only on tape. I really appreciate this. Fabulous, fabulous.

  • I saw the show with the Models on the 25th. I didn't know much about the Reels and they were a little clunky to start (Dave's voice took a couple of songs to warm up), but I had a lovely time and really enjoyed all the songs. And yes, Dave still does the witty banter. :)

  • Yeah!! I'm flying over from the States to see 'em Sept 25th, with the Models! How cool is that! Great band with great changes in their early years.

  • This is totally terrific! Thank you for posting it!

  • I saw The Reels opening for INXS during the mid 1980's @ The Perth Entertainment Centre. As we entered you could hear this very song, only to hear it stop because the place had to be evacuated due to a leaky gas cylinder or something. Once The Reels restarted their set, Dave Mason politely asked the crowd, "Alright, who farted?"

  • Yes good memories. Saw the Reels at the old Chevron Hotel in 1982. Were great live.

  • Great memories.Wasnt dave masons father the mayor of dubbo at the time?

  • I have an extended version of this clip on an old betavision tape where the old people at the end actually bone.

  • being on k-tel was a marketing stroke of genius...K-tel was all mothers day lps and engelbert humperdink....the Reels did it in their own way by going in this uncool direction, plus it was big time publicity.

  • It was on KTel because it was sort of ironic. Most bands would kill to have been on KTel

  • I've never heard of this band. this is great!

  • Yeah, does anyone know? The last time I was in Oz I looked EVERYWHERE and couldn't even find a second hand tape.I adore this album.

  • I've never spotted a copy of 'Beautiful' and I've spent a lot of time hunting for music.

  • check out the second hand shops or ebay. I picked up a copy of this at a country bric a brac store of all places!

  • @adehmark You can buy it on itunes

  • @adehmark Red Eye Records in King Street Sydney had a Reels retrospective CD in 2006 which included this and others

  • where can I get a copy of "Beautiful". Does anybody know?

  • C'mon K-TEL !!! Re-release the beautiful album!!

Thanks for posting this brilliant version. The Best

  • It always confused me as to why The Reels released the album through K-Tel. I mean, isn't that a drop in standards?

  • @nzoz1982 The Reels never really painted within the lines. Thats what made them refreshing.

  • @nzoz1982 It was a deliberate statement on the commercialisation of the music industry wasn't it?

  • @flagey12 i hope so!

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • You missed my point, gypsy.I was talking about the general media.I have seen them live and they were brilliant.

  • sorry...

  • sorry 'bout that....please accept my sincere apology...

  • What a shame no-one got the reels when they were at their best.

  • I have followed them from the beginning in Dubbo...as lived in Mendooran... No shame wotsoever!!! NEVER under-performed and from start to finish...ALWAYS gave us their best!! Critics....probably NEVER written or performed a tune yourselves!!! At least the rest of us here are TRUE Reels fans!!

  • I love The REELS too. Can you tell me how different they were in the country as The Brucelanders, before they came to Sydney..any memories to share?

  • Many, Many Thanks... I have been looking for this song for about 18 years! I did not know its name, nor the bands name.. I randomly heard it playing on a car radio in a movie I just watched...

  • best version of this song ever made.

  • Great to see all this reels etc, thankyou.

Did the bad moon rising clip get taken down?

  • Great memories, i have been looking for this song for ages, many thanks for posting it.

  • Thanks for loading this clip. I once played it about 10 straight in one ofthe old record machines in 85 to my future wife. My mates at the pub hated me for that. great memories. thanks and will be showing my wife tomorrow

  • Now I remember he actually sung 'Quasimodos Dream' that evening... Fuck what a memerable coupla songs

  • This song was made for Dave Mason. I think he sung this at the 'Countdown Awards' circa 1983, but slower?? Was just a little tucker then but I'll never forget it..

  • Great Bacharach classic...

  • Thank you for uploading. Great version by The Reels. Luv it.

  • OMG - I can't belive you found this clip.. Thanks so much for sharing it!!! Great to see the 80s are alive and well!
