I agree that UM is one of the most talented bands out their right now however, that being said, I don't think they're better than phish. The only reason their songs sound more complex than a lot of phish's is because UM has two guitars. Also, UM are HORRIBLE song writers. Their songs sound like a bad rip off of frank zappa crossed with phish. Just because you can improvise exceptionally

well doesn't make you a good band. The songs need to come first, then compliment select ones with some improv

@zappa84 dude UM writes a completely different kind of music than phish and even farther away from zappa. their jams and their playing may be similar but the actual songs are more prog/modern rock where as phish is wayyy more jazz influenced. zappa is just in a category of his own. UM writes sick shit man, that is why they are so huge.

I've seen the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Phish, and countless other bands since the early 90's and 2010 UM is simply amazing. Their abilities and knowledge of music is incredible. It's truely magical what they do.

You know, there are a lot of "jam" bands out there, and what-ever little box you try to shove 'em in to. Just let these guys be musicians, Umphrey's is a band I can listen to at any point in the day. Not because I like to sing along or pretend to be the lead singer, but because they try to take you on a musical "journey" (if you will) and keep the you moving with their groove, now a days thats a hard thing thing to find and I'm willing to bet Umphrey's has a lot to offer the new music scene

They grew on me, too, and sure enough they got plenty of flaws if we were to hunt for those. Brendan could REALLY use singing lessons, for starters. As for the Dead, I dunno, it's gotta be a matter of taste, I could never hear anything I liked there, but I am genuinely grateful they opened the door for this kind of scene that does not conform to the Jay-Z/Taylor Swift/Madonna kind of garbage.

Kudos to them for having been the first, but everything else about them is mediocre on the best of days - and I heard a lot of it, unfortunately. Gormarx, apparently, someone in the Dead (I think either Billy or Mickey) made some comments about Jerry having a spell of sounding sloppy at shows. I think it might have been in the early 90's. And Dave Grisman basically said what you just did. That aside from Phil, no one in the GD could touch Jerry musically and they were, for the most part, unexceptional musicians. That being said, the music they made as a whole though, was pretty friggin' far from mediocre.

Give them a chance. They have tons of songs in their repetoir, and almost none of them sound the same. I'm a big fan of both Phish and Umphrey's and I'll admit this song is pretty garage band-y and not that good. But I don't think you should rule out a whole band because of one song.

Just because you don't happen to like this style of music doesn't mean you have to call them a "bad version of a garage band". Most covers they do are better than the original songs. By the way, in the 60's-70's, everybody at shows were high so they never got tired of the 20-minute 3-chord jams. Umphrey's improv involves many key and time signature changes. Most people don't even know they're making it up as they go along.

all i was saying was that brain was disrepecting the old jams from the 60's and 70's. Everyone knows umphs makes it up as they go along, that is the nature of a jam band. i pay attention to what goes on in older music and the jams aren't 3 chord "everyone is high so it sounds great" jams. and umphs still has a song they play, they just have jam cues. not that complex really. not saying jams aren't good. Jamming is probably the best music out there, It just doesn't take a musical genius to do it.
