I've been on one of these slides. If one gives himself a good push off, the initial speed is enough so that the parabola of free fall motion is above the curve of the slide, resulting in having no reaction force from the slide - a very weird and inherently terrifying experience. Thinking about it, if one were to have a component of the velocity cross-wise, he could very well veer off the slide enough to not be contained by it.

i went on the log flume at thorpe park when i was eight. i saw the height of it and assumed it would have some lap resraint or something, anything to protect us from gravity. nope. i sat behind my friend and as that stupid fibreglass log with shallow sides and slippy moulded seats tipped beyond the point of no return i experienced the same as this kid. weighlessness and sheer terror. eight years old, and i had to get my head around the idea my spine was about to enter my brain cavity on impact.
