Try rendering the audio and video tracks separately. That's what Sony recommends doing in Sony Pro 11 for DVD. Save them using the same name and folder, and DVD Architect will automatically find and connect the audio to the video when you import the video into DVD Architect.
I did an mp4 render from Vegas Pro 11 and tried to add the video to a DVD Architect 5 project and the video's fine but the audio is not. The track is there, but there's some strange clicks in it instead. Tried your method but no different. Any other suggestions?
@utopiastudiosbiz If the clicks are showing up on the rendered video, and you have tried different render file types, then it means the clicks are probably on one of the audio tracks in Sony Vegas Pro. Find one of the clicks on the rendered file, then match that location in Vegas Pro to see if you see what's causing it.
@guerillabill Thanks. There's no clicks in the video. The whole audio track is replaced with silence that has occasional faint clicking sounds in it. The integrity of the rendered audio track is totally messed up... There's no correlation between the video and audio tracks in that regard.

I tried this fix with my Vegas Platinum 10 and didn't work. When I tried to put the MP4 in the timeline, it crashed Vegas. My problem is that the audio gets streched and choppy. Any suggestions?
@humdec The problem is with the Quicktime codec which is required to edit mp4/mov files. Unfortunately Quicktime is not very compatible with non apple versions of MP4, and that's why you are having problems. One solution seems to be to uninstall quicktime, and then find and install Quicktime 7.1.4 which works better with non apple mp4 files.
@guerillabill Thanks so much for the quick reply. I uninstalled Quicktime, is it required to run Vegas? Do you know if Vegas 11 has corrected this problem? Thanks again.
@humdec Quicktime is needed to view and edit mov/mp4 files. Newer versions of quicktime are not compatible with older versions of mp4/mov file. So if editing mov/mp4 files, you may want to install an older version of Quicktime.
Hey Bill, thanks so much for your videos, they are by far the best tutorials I've found. I've followed the guidance here and made the fix, the only problem is that the audio renders out of sync. This seems to be a common problem, any ideas? Thanks again!
@HolisticFutureTV Mp4/mov files seem to cause all kinds of problems. But I haven't run into audio rendering out of sync. I sometimes see audio of sync in the preview window, but it clears up when I render. Could be related to the demands rendering and previewing mp4/mov puts on the CPU and RAM, especially if you have slower computer.

@MrAntgvls If you deleted the plugin, it will still be on your computer in the Windows recycle bin folder. Open that folder, and you can restore it from there.
@guerillabill You might not be able to anwser this.. but I have Vegas movie studio platinum 6.0 and the qt7plug.dll for me is qt5plug.dll and when i replace it, sony doesnt even recognise .mp4

@TheBenjaminBlogs Just because the video has an .avi extension, doesn't make it avi. Many clips, especially those downloaded or from analog video capture devices, have an avi extension in their file name, but are actually mov/mp4 video files. You can use the free gspot codec detector to check the clip to find out what it really is, and then find a codec that matches the clip.
@guerillabill If by 'analog' you mean a Camera or Camcorder. Im using a screen capture program, But anywho i solved it, I just got a video convertsion App. Now i run my files perfectly.~
Thanks a bunch, got my files working, one thing worth noting, I'm workin' with what looks like exactly what you're workin' with, (Windows 7, Sony Vegas 9 Platinum) but in that folder where you paste the file to, I had a lot more files, and one with the same name as the one you renamed, but when I renamed mine, the audio went away, when I went back and changed it to it's original name, everything was fine,
@TheJamesPope correction, when i renamed mine, from qt7plug to qt7plugold the Video, not audio, went away, but the audio was there, when I changed the name back, after pasting the file in the folder with it, everything worked out :)
Hi Bill, any chance on doing a tut,on how to add an audio effect to a particular piece of films audio with effecting the whole piece eg.end of narration with delay and fade.

I use a Canon Powershot SX30is to film and it records in .mov. and I have Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 and when I try to put the .mov files into it, it's all choppy and doesn't have sound? Please help, I've looked everywhere.
@superalphageek In most cases, mp4 and mov files work well in Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10. However, if the video device you use records in a non standard mp4/mov format, it is possible that the quicktime codec may not be able to decode it. This is a problem with the itunes/quicktime codec, and not Vegas. Try uninstalling quicktime, then installing an older version of Quicktime. Quicktime 7.1.4 seems to work better.
Hello again. I have a question about .avi. My Sony Vegas Movie Studio won't play .avi files. I got it to work once before but I don't remember how. All the tutorials say to download codecs, which include Xvid and Divx, which I really despise. Lol. Is there a way I can get the .avi files to work in Vegas a different way? Or are there other codecs that you would recommend to fix it?
@Diamonddraw89 Sony Vegas works great with avi files. Unfortunately, some video recording devices put an avi extension on files that are not avi. This is true with some pocket video cameras. They record in divx or xvid, and label the video as avi. When Sony Vegas uses the avi codec to decode what it thinks is an avi file, it won't work on these mislabeled files. Check the device you recorded the video with to see what format the video is actually recorded in. Then load the needed codec.
i have an mp4 optimuo sweex. can find my mp4 on the computer and listen to the music i have as i´m listeninng on my computer but when i try to press play it keeps saying "NanD no files", i´ll go to the meny of how much space i have left, there is plenty and the files takes some MB, i have tried to convert the files, open media player and synchronozing, it all wiorks out and it reads that the files is on my mp4, but still the NAND no files pop up, meaning i can´t open up any of my music filesD=

What about the same problem with .avi files? i have a gopro stadard def camera and I cant get the audio to come up in vegas 10. The same files play audio in windows movie maker for xp, and in windows media player for windows 7 so I know they are there. any help? Thanks
I have no problems with mp4 files either. My HD gopro saves in mp4, and I have no problems with those but my standard definition gopro is .avi - Right from gopros website ----> (The camera records in motion-jpeg AVI format). Thanks for the help but looks like Ill have to get a hold of they guys @ sony
@mybad67 Motion Jpeg is not avi. It is an older form of mp4 in an avi wrapper. You can downloaded the free MPEG Streamclip from squared5 com and render the video as an MP4, and Sony Vegas can open and edit the file.
@guerillabill it switched to a mp4 file, But there is no audio in mp4 format, The audio is there when the video is played in media player or any other player (the old avi clip).. I give up. My gopro HD will be here today and It wont be a problem anyways.(hopefully) Thanks for the suggestions Bill!
Hi Bill. I have this problem with kodak zi8 mov/quicktime files- when I load import them to movie studio, the audio seems 'blocked out' on the timeline with a large white lined box- ie can't see the normal audio signature. Is this the same problem you are detailing, and do you recommend and editing software programs that are not going to have problems with quicktime/mov files?
@ShiineEnterprise Kodak Zi8 files work well with Movie Studio 9 & 10, depending on which version of Quicktime you have on your computer. In fact, I shoot and use Kodak Zi8 video files in many of the videos I put on YouTube. Trying uninstalling quicktime, and installing either a newer or older version until you find the one that works. Then do not allow quicktime or itunes to install a newer version.
@MewVampireNinja That's the problem with mov/mp4 files. Quicktime codec is needed to edit them, but Quicktime isn't compatible with all varieties of mp4/mov video files created by non Apple products. Blame it on Apple. Some older versions of quicktime work better with non compatible mov/mp4 files.
thank you for your help. i think im going to start using avi files since right now thats the type of file that will work for my version vegas. Thank you again for helping

@Leg3ndKilla687 Blame it on the quicktime codec. If you have recently updated itunes or quicktime on your computer, it can cause problems when editing mov/mp4 files.
Installing the latest version of Movie Studio Platinum will install a better version of the codec, and usually fix the problem.
@guerillabill might be too much to ask,i appreciate you replying by the way,but any step by step you can help me out with in a message or something, if you can help me fix this problem ..but so what do i do uninstall quick and itunes?..re-install Movie studio pro plat 9??
@Leg3ndKilla687 Start by reinstalling MS Studio 9. That might resolve it. If not, try installing the MS10 Platinum trial. That should install the correct mov/mp4 codec. You can still use MS 9 after installing MS10 trial.
I'm using AVI Files in Sony Vegas Pro 10.0c, (I don't feel like updating). What happens is, after rendering the project as an MP4, all audio is gone. I've made sure I have "Include Audio" checked. I've even re-installed Vegas numerous times, and it still doesn't work. I've tried other things like using Windows Media Video 11, still no audio. I then installed Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD, and audio is there after rendering in Movie Studio... Any ideas?
@Zookie297 Blame it on the quicktime codec. If you have recently updated itunes or quicktime on your computer, it can cause problems when rendering mp4 files.
Installing Movie Studio Platinum will install a better version of the codec, and that's why it now works.
Now that you've got it working, don't accept any quicktime or itunes updates on the computer you edit with.
I have the opposite problem: I can hear the audio but can't see the video. When I try to put a .mp4 video file on a video-track it only shows me the audio. There's no video at all.
When I click on a .mp4 video file in the explorer I see following information:
@KingMuleRobba 99% of the problems I am asked about involve mp4/mov video files. The problem is the apple quicktime codec which is needed to decode and edit mp4/mov files isn't compatible with many of the mp4/mov formats used by video recorders. The easy way to avoid the problem is don't use mp4/mov files. But if you are stuck with those formats, try using Cineform Neoscene to convert the mp4/mov file to avi.
The funny thing with this problem is that I had it before I got my new HDD and OS (my hard drive crashed) and there your fix worked perfectly. Now I have Win 7 and suddenly the problem appears and this fix isn't working anymore.
Also it's not only the .mp4 files which don't work, all other video files with mpeg-codec don't work either.
First time I have this problem with Sony Vegas Movie Studio...
@KingMuleRobba You probably installed the latest itunes or quicktime update on the new hard drive, and that is the root of the problem. Newer versions of the quicktime codec in itunes and quicktime are not compatible with older or non standard versions of quicktime. Movie studio uses whatever version of quicktime you have on your computer. Try uninstalling quicktime, then finding and downloading an older version and install it.
I downloaded the Version 7.1.0 now (@ (3w)°oldversion°com/QuickTime°html). Version 6.0 didn't work, unfortunately (it said something like "online support isn't working"). I still have the same problem. Do you know with which version it should work?
Thank you very much for helping me, also sorry that I keep annoying you with these questions. You probably heard them about a million times. But I just don't know where else to ask and, I can't help it, you give the best answers.
I have a problem where when i put an MP4 file type in sony vegas pro 9, the video is zoomed in to the top left of what was recorded. It only does this for this file type, and when i zoom out, it only shows that corner of the video.
@xWTBG The problem is in the video file. Nothing you can do about it in Sony Vegas. You could try using Cineform NeoScene to convert the mp4 to avi.
mp4 video doesn't really follow any standard format, and the required quicktime codec doesn't do a good job decoding mp4 files that weren't created by apple devices. To solve the problem, don't use video devices that save in mp4 format.
I eralier could only see black screen and audio, whne puting a mp4 file in vegas, and after doing all the steps you said, now when I import mp4 file, and error occurs and it says "none of the files dropped on Vegas Pro could be opened" :/
@gnomaz15 As mentioned in the above video title and in the video itself and on the Sony web site, the mp4 fix is for Sony Movie Studio, not Vegas Pro. You may need to reinstall Vegas Pro to update the correct file.
I don't even have Vegas Studio, not entirely sure why I'm watching this. But very helpful nonetheless! Now I'll know what to do if this ever happens to me. That's work a 'like' isn't it? I think so.
im using platinum of movie studio, and when I converted my .MOV to .AVI the audio is there but the video doesn't appear... why is it so? how can I fix it?
@guerillabill cool! thanks!!! :) another question though. Everytime I use the video stabilizer at movie studio 10, it always crash down and says that there's some error. how can i fix it?
@brenie16 Most crashes are related to insufficient Ram or no memory on video card. Processing effects is RAM and CPU intensive, especially if the source files are mp4 or mov. More RAM and a faster computer usually solves the problem. Or use Cineform Neoscene to convert the mp4/mov file to AVi, which is easier to edit.
@xAT80x Doesn't lag on my computer - check all my videos. Editing HD video does require a powerful computer, a lot of RAM, a video card with 1024 meg ram, and plenty of drive space. If your computer is not up to the task, you'll see lag in the preview window.
@guerillabill yea and about this solution it didnt worked on my vegas pro 8.0 :S it changed nothing same problem :S i followed step by step but when i click on my mp4 files it said Error <-
@xAT80x As noted in the above video title, the patch is only for MOVIE STUDIO, not VEGAS PRO. You might consider updating to a newer version of Vegas Pro, as Vegas Pro 8 is 5 years old, and the mp4/mov format has changed a lot in those 5 years.
@Davidfct93 Most mp4 file converters don't actually convert the file. They just put it in a wrapper with a different extension. Still mp4. Since there are so many different MP4 formats, you'll have to find the correct version of the quicktime decoder in order to edit the file. Mp4/mov files are a real pain!
@Parliss If you read the messages posted here, you'll see the majority of problems are related to mp4/mov video files. The problem is caused by the different varieties of mp4/mov and how the quicktime mov/mp4 decoder from Apple isn't compatible with all the formats.
The best solution is don't use mov/mp4 files, or convert them into avi or wmv.

hm now i get exception errors when i try to import meh
hbeezey 3 months ago
Try rendering the audio and video tracks separately. That's what Sony recommends doing in Sony Pro 11 for DVD. Save them using the same name and folder, and DVD Architect will automatically find and connect the audio to the video when you import the video into DVD Architect.
guerillabill 3 months ago
I did an mp4 render from Vegas Pro 11 and tried to add the video to a DVD Architect 5 project and the video's fine but the audio is not. The track is there, but there's some strange clicks in it instead. Tried your method but no different. Any other suggestions?
utopiastudiosbiz 3 months ago
@utopiastudiosbiz If the clicks are showing up on the rendered video, and you have tried different render file types, then it means the clicks are probably on one of the audio tracks in Sony Vegas Pro. Find one of the clicks on the rendered file, then match that location in Vegas Pro to see if you see what's causing it.
guerillabill 3 months ago
@guerillabill Thanks. There's no clicks in the video. The whole audio track is replaced with silence that has occasional faint clicking sounds in it. The integrity of the rendered audio track is totally messed up... There's no correlation between the video and audio tracks in that regard.
utopiastudiosbiz 3 months ago
@guerillabill Also. the rendered video looks and plays great otherwise, only in DVD Architect does this happen when I add media.

@ShottySniperz401 I've edited hundreds of mov/mp4 video clips with Sony Vegas and never had video that only showed the top left corner of the video.
guerillabill 3 months ago
@guerillabill It was recorded with my HD PVR. Does that have something to do with it?
ShottySniperz401 3 months ago
@ShottySniperz401 Yes, HD PVRs typically record small frame sizes at reduced frame rates. That would explain the problem you are seeing.

humdec 4 months ago
@humdec The problem is with the Quicktime codec which is required to edit mp4/mov files. Unfortunately Quicktime is not very compatible with non apple versions of MP4, and that's why you are having problems. One solution seems to be to uninstall quicktime, and then find and install Quicktime 7.1.4 which works better with non apple mp4 files.
guerillabill 4 months ago
@guerillabill Thanks so much for the quick reply. I uninstalled Quicktime, is it required to run Vegas? Do you know if Vegas 11 has corrected this problem? Thanks again.
humdec 4 months ago
@humdec Quicktime is needed to view and edit mov/mp4 files. Newer versions of quicktime are not compatible with older versions of mp4/mov file. So if editing mov/mp4 files, you may want to install an older version of Quicktime.
guerillabill 4 months ago
Hey Bill, thanks so much for your videos, they are by far the best tutorials I've found. I've followed the guidance here and made the fix, the only problem is that the audio renders out of sync. This seems to be a common problem, any ideas? Thanks again!
HolisticFutureTV 4 months ago
@HolisticFutureTV Mp4/mov files seem to cause all kinds of problems. But I haven't run into audio rendering out of sync. I sometimes see audio of sync in the preview window, but it clears up when I render. Could be related to the demands rendering and previewing mp4/mov puts on the CPU and RAM, especially if you have slower computer.

@guerillabill But I'm editing Avi not mp4, The mp4/mov work fine, its my Avi that have no audio~
TheBenjaminBlogs 5 months ago
@TheBenjaminBlogs Just because the video has an .avi extension, doesn't make it avi. Many clips, especially those downloaded or from analog video capture devices, have an avi extension in their file name, but are actually mov/mp4 video files. You can use the free gspot codec detector to check the clip to find out what it really is, and then find a codec that matches the clip.

superalphageek 6 months ago

Diamonddraw89 7 months ago
@Diamonddraw89 Sony Vegas works great with avi files. Unfortunately, some video recording devices put an avi extension on files that are not avi. This is true with some pocket video cameras. They record in divx or xvid, and label the video as avi. When Sony Vegas uses the avi codec to decode what it thinks is an avi file, it won't work on these mislabeled files. Check the device you recorded the video with to see what format the video is actually recorded in. Then load the needed codec.

@mybad67 Motion Jpeg is not avi. It is an older form of mp4 in an avi wrapper. You can downloaded the free MPEG Streamclip from squared5 com and render the video as an MP4, and Sony Vegas can open and edit the file.

ShiineEnterprise 7 months ago

Leg3ndKilla687 8 months ago
@Leg3ndKilla687 Blame it on the quicktime codec. If you have recently updated itunes or quicktime on your computer, it can cause problems when editing mov/mp4 files.
Installing the latest version of Movie Studio Platinum will install a better version of the codec, and usually fix the problem.

I've got a stranger problem.
Any ideas?
Zookie297 8 months ago

Audio: 40 Kbit/s, 16.000Hz, Mono; 00:01:42:08; Fraunhofer HE-AAC
When I right click on the file and scroll down to Plug-In it say
"Name: fhgaacplug2.dll"
Is there any fix for this problem?!
KingMuleRobba 9 months ago
@KingMuleRobba 99% of the problems I am asked about involve mp4/mov video files. The problem is the apple quicktime codec which is needed to decode and edit mp4/mov files isn't compatible with many of the mp4/mov formats used by video recorders. The easy way to avoid the problem is don't use mp4/mov files. But if you are stuck with those formats, try using Cineform Neoscene to convert the mp4/mov file to avi.

Thanks for your quick answer!
KingMuleRobba 9 months ago
@KingMuleRobba You probably installed the latest itunes or quicktime update on the new hard drive, and that is the root of the problem. Newer versions of the quicktime codec in itunes and quicktime are not compatible with older or non standard versions of quicktime. Movie studio uses whatever version of quicktime you have on your computer. Try uninstalling quicktime, then finding and downloading an older version and install it.
guerillabill 9 months ago

xWTBG 9 months ago
@xWTBG The problem is in the video file. Nothing you can do about it in Sony Vegas. You could try using Cineform NeoScene to convert the mp4 to avi.
mp4 video doesn't really follow any standard format, and the required quicktime codec doesn't do a good job decoding mp4 files that weren't created by apple devices. To solve the problem, don't use video devices that save in mp4 format.

brenie16 9 months ago
@brenie16 The program you are using to convert mov to avi isn't really converting the file, just putting the mov in a avi wrapper. Still a mov file.
Try using Cineform Neoscene to do the mov to avi conversion. It works.

@guerillabill cool! thanks!!! :) another question though. Everytime I use the video stabilizer at movie studio 10, it always crash down and says that there's some error. how can i fix it?
brenie16 9 months ago
@brenie16 Most crashes are related to insufficient Ram or no memory on video card. Processing effects is RAM and CPU intensive, especially if the source files are mp4 or mov. More RAM and a faster computer usually solves the problem. Or use Cineform Neoscene to convert the mp4/mov file to AVi, which is easier to edit.

Still mp4.
