@SkyGanko the older legends don't have vampires turning to dust or fatally wounded due to the sun...In fact a few stories like Dracula have him going out into the sun. Just not a bright day, mostly a cast over day. Stakes only peg them to the ground so they can't rise from their coffins, but don't kill them. They only sure fire way to kill a vampire is cut off the head.

The sun thing came from the movie called son of dracula, where they utilized this idea first to add drama.
