They are dangerous, every stingray has a poisoned sting (yes, a stingray killed Steve Irwin). They should not feed them at all. Leave the nature alone.
I was also on Reethi Beach in May. I thought it was pretty OK. The people at the diving school were not very committed though. What do you think is the best place on the Maldives?
I was on Maayafushi island (Ari Atoll) three years ago and on Velidhu island (also Ari Atoll) two years ago. Both were better than Reethi. In Velidhu the reef was spectacular (the corarls were mostly alive and colorful) the food was better. Maayafushi is a mall island (300 m), cosy and nice atmosphere (mostly Italians). In addition both were cheaper than Reethi where the food was without spirit (except the cakes), the management was not committed either

banyan tree maldives is the best so far, you can feed the sting rays at 6 pm too :)

Reethi Beach. Not the best island in the Maldives, but the sting ray feeding was actually quite peculiar
