The look on Abrahams' face as he watches Liddell says a lot. He found no pleasure in his own victory, because he was running to ease his own doubt that he belonged in crusty, conservative British society. But simply winning a race, no matter how much notoriety it earns you, cannot cure your demons. His victory was in vain. Liddell's was not.
White Christians were much faster when they disrepected people of all other colors. Civil righrt s for all seems to have slowed them down. I'm sorry white Christians.
I loved this movie ever since I first saw it at age seven. I've always wished that I could see Liddell run for real, and see what the people who watched him reported.
eric liddell was my true life top hero role model of all time, it saddens me those same people he gave up his life from today would kill white men scotish in thier back yard, im 1/2 a scot i have a eveil just pure evil stroy becuase of a chinese man, i wisih liddel left them to rot in hell, as they porbally were wons that cut his throat, i do not know whole truth behind his death in china, but he should have helped his own back yard.
To quote: "God made me for a purpose, and He ALSO made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure." This is a story of the human spirit and triumph, bit Eric showed that with Purpose is what his race was all about.
@tigerchief Hey, man, miracles do happen! Don't count the White man out! LOL. God can do anything, even with the worst of material! A retired Catholic priest in Canada.
I'm an atheist and "Chariots of Fire" and "The Mission" are amongst my favourite films. People who post comments here like "God exists!", "Honor Jesus!" or "God does not exist!" clearly missed the point of the movie. It's not about god, it's about kind, honest people who fought for what they believe in. Abraham fought prejudice an finally realised that his love for Sybil is more important. Eric believed running was his purpose. For me, Eric's Theme is Vangelis' most beautiful cue.
@BimberMistrz You clearly missed the point of the movie. If you didn't realize, Abraham realized that winning didn't fill the void in his heart, but when he sees Eric Liddell. He realizes that Eric runs for something for purposeful, something more deep, that he could ever hope to copy. Did Abraham seem happy at the end? No. Was Eric happy at the end? Yes. Eric believed that he could Glorify God through running, not that running was his purpose.
@BimberMistrz Liddell didn't believe running was his purpose, just look at his missionary work in China. Yes the movie was overcoming life's obstacles and fighting for what you believe that's exactly what Liddell did. Believe it or not he lived for God and to claim that the movie has nothing to do with God when the man gave up the most important day of his life for his belief in God is ridiculous.
"I believe God made for a purpose, He also made me fast... when I run... I feel his pleasure" ...great lines! great movie! unique score! unforgattable classic!
This always makes me think of my father. He loved to talk about running and taught me everything I know. My dad made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run, I feel his pleasure.
I loved the book about him; "Eric Liddell- Men of Faith" Never seen the film so now I want to!! :) God bless you Mr. Liddell someday I will shake your hand and thank you for what you have done!!
I'm atheist but I do believe there is beauty in throwing yourself into ambition to strive to be all you are capable of being and still be humble in the exaltation of victory and if checked by defeat not to feel bitter but to admire a skillfull adversary in his acommplishment's
Empieza a correr con la nota en la mano, durante la carrera ya no tiene la nota, pero cuando llega ahí está otra vez. Epic Fail, pero de todas todas, una película impresionante, dirigida de manera perfecta, perfecta en todos sus momentos.
This is a Bible quote taken from the book 1Samuel chapter 2 verse 30, ""Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and your father's house would minister before me forever.' But now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained."
The question though is, exactly what is god? I think, or rather, I know modern christianity has got it all wrong. Still, maybe it´s better to honor god without knowing that than not honoring him at all. The western world is in great need of any type of spiritualism to rid ourselves of the notion that materialistic wealth is the meaning of life. This film is great btw, if you haven't seen it, do!
You can convince anyone of your religious beliefs, so stop trying and focus on the beauty of this. Whatever god you believe, running can make you feel one with it, the earth, the way, the force whatever. All things are stripped away and its just you feeling alive.
The author of Flying Scotsman (a bio of Eric Liddell) interviewed anyone she could find who knew him--athletes, classmates, fellow missionaries--and NONE of them had a bad word to say about him. Truly a man who glorified God with his life.
to do god honor and create that one moment in life when your mind and body are one and their best from discipline and denial is also to honor all that is great in humanity, reguardless of religion or the lack of it.......it is to honor all hunankind..........................Q.E.D. (there lies the solution........)
DayofStorms. Do not judge people that believe in a higher being such as a god or gods. We are all human and most people in religion have faith because they believe in a world that is full of love and hope. I know there is no factual proof that there is a God but no one can 100% prove that a god or gods does not exist. Have faith in your fellow human beings and let your heart be filled
Life is but a blink of an eye compared to the eternity that awaits us. It's best to figure out our true purpose here. Honoring God fills our souls with joy and peace. I do not call that a waste of time.
If there is no eternity then there is nothing after death. And death is something then to be reconed with and feared. But as I know My Reedemer lives and I know where I will be after I die, I can do my job to serve and protect and even lay down my life if asked to. I fear no death for I will live forever in eternity with Him.
@DaysOfStorms Do you hold to a strict empirical proof for everything before you can acknowledge it exists? How do you empirically prove that love exists? I have never seen it in a test tube or held it in my hand, but I know it exists. At some level we make inferences on everything or we would believe nothing. We do this in science without having all the details correct, as theory evolves. Likewise, a case can be made for the existence of God by using historical and scientific evidence.
Probably best to err on the side of caution. If there is a God waiting for us, and you have chosen to ignore Him in this life, my guess is that in the next, you will be shovelling shit for a VERY long time. Anyway, what right do you have to say people waste their life on God? Perhaps you need to look at your own life first, before criticising others, of whom you no doubt know very little. And tell me, how do you know there ISN'T a God. Who told you this and how do they know?
Other strange coincidence: almost all the main actors went to India for a film or a serial: Charleson for Gandhi, Farrell for Jewel in the Crown, Cross for Far Pavilions, Havers for Passage to India.
RIP eric liddel, for you did scotland well that day, and every other day you lived.

The movie doesn't insist much on the homosexuality of Liddle. Nevertheless, it is evident and it gives a further depth to the carachter. You cannot ask more to a Tatcher's era movie.
He was a great man, anyway. His biography show it. We all should have an enormous respect for him both as an athlete and as a human being.
You are mistaken. Eric Liddell was, in fact, married to Florence MacKenzie, a Canadian, and they had three daughters: Patricia, Heather, and Maureen. There has never been any indication or even rumor of same sex attraction associated with the life of Mr. Liddell. The actor, Ian Charleson, who portrayed Liddell in the movie "Chariots Of Fire" was actively homosexual. Mr. Charleson passed away in January of 1990.
mwp62, thank you. It's indeed mouth-opening to see how perverts try to include everyone in history into their filthy camp without conducting a slight authentic research.
