The Smiths are the greatest band that ever was period!!! Morrisey is more important than Wilde or Shakespear. This is one of the greatest songs from that first album. And thank you if you love the Smiths like I do. We are a unique and interesting bunch. Don't you think?...
Let them come to you, baby......I've been with MOZ since I was a mere babe of 14, and I'm still friends with my men who won't come out because they're on Wall Street and doctors on Park Ave. Oh well, St. Joe's, I know it's gonna happen someday.
what a singer !! incredible !! what a band !! i m listening morrissey since im 14. I ve discovered the smiths in 1986 (im 38); i saw several times morrissey at concerts in france (zenith, olympia), this singer is fantastic. emotional rawness.. i ve heard he had a collapse on stage last year and he can't sing now. excuse me my english is very bad. Someone knows more about him ???
Q: Of all your songs, from both Smiths and solo material, which song are you most proud of lyrically?
Best wishes,
Peter Finan
A: Hello Peter,
It's impossible to answer this because I'm proud of most of them. There are only a few that make me shudder such as "Get Off The Stage," "Journalists Who Lie," "I Don't Owe You Anything".... But most of them, I think, somehow stand the test of time. Of course, some songs are better than others...
Tis a good song tho.. Could it be possible that the lyrics just evoke bad memories for him so he finds it hard to listen to, rather than him thinking the song itself is bad bad?
I don't know, it's hard to say. I think it'd be a fair judgement that they are the least strong lyrics on the debut. Maybe he finds the lyrics a little crude.
i dont think it was a sarcastic gesture. you have to remember its very early in their career. nobody really knew who they were. moz's stage presence hasnt mature yet. he looks so cute and nervous
Ha, are you joking? Covering that song was the worst decision Morrissey made during the Smiths. John Porter played bass on it and Joyce is replaced with drum machine. It's horrifying.
I do like it personally, but then again I even like "work is a 4 letter word."
But for me "Death at ones elbow" is too over-produced and has to much going on in it, it would probably give me a headache if it was 3 minutes longer.
Did you know that the piano in that one is being played by Morrissey himself? It's the first and only time you'll see in the credits playing one instrument... that may explain why it sounded... out of place.
@azeli1 I am NOT wrong. Somebody mentioned how annoying the piano was on "Death of a disco dancer', and I told her that it was Morrissey who played that part.
This is the greatest Smiths song ever!!! I don't know how many times I would put on this song in my car and just drive. To me I felt like the song is about how much you would give to someone and get nothing in return but it really didn't matter. You would do it again.
I try to refrain from Morrissey praise. the whole band were so talented. but when i hear the guy singing LIVE this well..... bloody hell. he's amazing.
And I would know, for I too lost an album... only mine was "The Queen is dead" (I've only just noticed how beautiful, "Q," is with this font....) and have regretted it ever since xD
Haha, who's to say I didn't buy the album again? I was attached to that album and when it was gone, I was irked, haha, doesn't mean I didn't replace it.
The best lyricist ever. Who can say he isn't. I wish i had seen them live but i was too young. I'm going to the o2 festival to see Morrissey. I'm sure despite his age he will be amazing! This would be a great occasion for he and Johnny Marr to reunite on stage.
Lightbox - you're a Wonderful (Wo)man! This is their 14th ever gig! And what a gig, what a band, what a creative legacy. Btw y'all the hilarious Moz comment that prefaces this...Richard Boon was the Buzzcocks manager and filmed the Manc gig footage on "Here Are The Young Men", the Joy Division video. Two amazing bands - what price Boon's memoirs?
The only regrettable thing is that the camera guy apparently didn't think Johnny Marr was important enough to film. He's almost invisible on this video. Too bad, we only get a glimpse of him and his beautiful Rickenbacker guitar
Wow! This bootleg is of incredibly good quality. I remember the boolegs I saw in the late 80s were all very poor quality. Thanks for posting this. And thank you youtube!
I agree with some of the previous comments - I've like the Smiths since '83 when i was 14 and my brother got the first album - this one's stood the time test - it's got true feelings envoked and remains as good now as the first time i heard it 24 years ago - proper lump in the throat!

One of my favorite personal Smiths songs of all time. its speaks of a lonely time I was going through.. but I have to admit, if I was
in the crowd during this performance, I would have booed heavily given how great the studio version was..
