  • bought on stolen wine.what a line

  • The Smiths are the greatest band that ever was period!!! Morrisey is more important than Wilde or Shakespear. This is one of the greatest songs from that first album. And thank you if you love the Smiths like I do. We are a unique and interesting bunch. Don't you think?...

  • @slopoke2112 You spelled Morrissey wrong.

  • 2 people were so mentally attached to this song that they lost all state of control and accidently clicked the dislike button.

  • Let them come to you, baby......I've been with MOZ since I was a mere babe of 14, and I'm still friends with my men who won't come out because they're on Wall Street and doctors on Park Ave. Oh well, St. Joe's, I know it's gonna happen someday.

  • One of my favorite personal Smiths songs of all time. its speaks of a lonely time I was going through.. but I have to admit, if I was

in the crowd during this performance, I would have booed heavily given how great the studio version was..

  • goes down smooth

  • absoloutely wonderful.

  • English university students should adopt this as their anthem and sing it at David Cameron

  • ...a nod was the first step...u know very well...what was coming next.

  • what a singer !! incredible !! what a band !! i m listening morrissey since im 14. I ve discovered the smiths in 1986 (im 38); i saw several times morrissey at concerts in france (zenith, olympia), this singer is fantastic. emotional rawness.. i ve heard he had a collapse on stage last year and he can't sing now. excuse me my english is very bad. Someone knows more about him ???

  • @78morrissey Ditto.

  • why does he say "everybody's favourite neighbour" and then "happy 312th"... I know who he is, but any significance?

  • It's always wonderful to listens to this song...

  • The last lines I interpret as Your asking someone out, and they say no in a real matter of fact way.

  • Morrissey has said that this song makes him cringe, the only song he's officially disowned.

  • When and where did he say this?

  • Nov '05 in a True to You Q&A.

Q: Of all your songs, from both Smiths and solo material, which song are you most proud of lyrically?

    Best wishes,

    Peter Finan

    A: Hello Peter,

It's impossible to answer this because I'm proud of most of them. There are only a few that make me shudder such as "Get Off The Stage," "Journalists Who Lie," "I Don't Owe You Anything".... But most of them, I think, somehow stand the test of time. Of course, some songs are better than others...

  • Wow, Thanks.

Tis a good song tho.. Could it be possible that the lyrics just evoke bad memories for him so he finds it hard to listen to, rather than him thinking the song itself is bad bad?

  • I don't know, it's hard to say. I think it'd be a fair judgement that they are the least strong lyrics on the debut. Maybe he finds the lyrics a little crude.

  • i dont think it was a sarcastic gesture. you have to remember its very early in their career. nobody really knew who they were. moz's stage presence hasnt mature yet. he looks so cute and nervous

  • morrissey always has interesting introduction to song live.

  • that vaguely sarcastic eyebrow raise (or was it an eye roll?) and salute when he's hit with all those flowers is just glorious.

  • nice observation :D

  • You should never go to them

    Let them come to you

    Just like I do!

  • Did I really walk all this way?

  • Beautiful, dark & funky bass lines.

    ANDY ROURKE I ADORE U !!!!!

  • fucking A.

  • I thought i'd heard every Smiths song there is...until i find this gig. God, there early stuff is incredible!

There has never been a Smiths Song that hasn't been brilliant.

  • yes there has.

"Death at ones elbow" on Strangeways was a disaster.

  • @Morrisseyisdead

Let's not overlook 'Golden Lights' here. 'Golden Lights' makes 'Death at One's Elbow' sound like 'I know it's over'.

  • I love 'Golden lights'! The last minute of it is quite beautiful.

  • @Morrisseyisdead

Ha, are you joking? Covering that song was the worst decision Morrissey made during the Smiths. John Porter played bass on it and Joyce is replaced with drum machine. It's horrifying.

  • I do like it personally, but then again I even like "work is a 4 letter word."

But for me "Death at ones elbow" is too over-produced and has to much going on in it, it would probably give me a headache if it was 3 minutes longer.

  • @Morrisseyisdead

It's the keyboard sound on 'Death...' that annoys me. The lyrics are passable. Then, Strangeways is my least favourite Smiths LP.

  • Same, for me their debut is their masterpiece.

  • @rherrick123

Did you know that the piano in that one is being played by Morrissey himself? It's the first and only time you'll see in the credits playing one instrument... that may explain why it sounded... out of place.

  • @jugazf you are wrong: morrissey also played piano in Death of the Disco Dancer (1987)

  • @azeli1 I am NOT wrong. Somebody mentioned how annoying the piano was on "Death of a disco dancer', and I told her that it was Morrissey who played that part.

  • @jugazf my apologies, mate, I did not get it... and piano on DODD is wonderful, btw

  • Who the hell is Richard Boon?

  • BUZZCOCKS S MANAGER BACK THEN

  • oh but i know what will make you smile tonight...

  • roukes harmonics

    wow.

  • @iabusepeopleforfun

    andy rourke´s harmonics! 1:36 1:59 3:13

  • Oh but I know what will make you smile tonight...

  • This song is so effective if you want to feel like shit after a girl ignored you. heh. If it's the other way around, then Girld Afraid.

  • I Love The Smiths So Much As well

  • Life is never kind!

  • This is the greatest Smiths song ever!!! I don't know how many times I would put on this song in my car and just drive. To me I felt like the song is about how much you would give to someone and get nothing in return but it really didn't matter. You would do it again.

  • You should never go to them

    Let them come to you

    Just like I do

  • I try to refrain from Morrissey praise. the whole band were so talented. but when i hear the guy singing LIVE this well..... bloody hell. he's amazing.

  • the smiths are for me the best music group of this century!!!!

  • The most underrated Smiths song - poignant and heartfelt.

  • i love so much this kind of songs...u can listen it in ur car walking or even in ur house man moz the great of ever like

  • i love the smiths

  • Richard lives in my building.

  • is he your favourite neighbour?

  • Beautiful song, emotional rawness. Powerful and a little depressing.

  • ...and that's the day the world ended.

And I would know, for I too lost an album... only mine was "The Queen is dead" (I've only just noticed how beautiful, "Q," is with this font....) and have regretted it ever since xD

  • So buy it again... GEEZ

    P.S. I lost my marbles

  • Did you buy them again?

Haha, who's to say I didn't buy the album again? I was attached to that album and when it was gone, I was irked, haha, doesn't mean I didn't replace it.

  • Haha, yes that is rather irksome, haha

  • Haha, yes, I too would be irked at such a thing, haha

  • The best lyricist ever. Who can say he isn't. I wish i had seen them live but i was too young. I'm going to the o2 festival to see Morrissey. I'm sure despite his age he will be amazing! This would be a great occasion for he and Johnny Marr to reunite on stage.

  • "Too freely on your lips words prematurely sad" Can somebody please tell me if this are actual words on the lyrics thank you!

  • correct me if im wrong but wasnt the Hacienda their 3rd gig

  • i believe the smiths were better than the beatles. for my taste WAY better. am I wrong?

  • the smiths were more emotional. i wouldn't say better. the beatles are hardly a fair comparison.

  • "A nod was the first step,

you knew very well, what was coming next..."

    truly a poet....

  • my personal theme song for the first time i was divorced.

  • my favorite smiths tune. Lyrics, perfect. The band's music, sublime.

  • genius!!

  • music doesnt get much better than this

  • Lightbox - you're a Wonderful (Wo)man! This is their 14th ever gig! And what a gig, what a band, what a creative legacy. Btw y'all the hilarious Moz comment that prefaces this...Richard Boon was the Buzzcocks manager and filmed the Manc gig footage on "Here Are The Young Men", the Joy Division video. Two amazing bands - what price Boon's memoirs?

  • I´m from Germany and I say Moz is the best!!!

  • omg,, i forgot how much i love this song

  • You should never go to them

    Let them come to you

    Just like I do

    Just like I do

  • the way he says "anything" Ahhhhh

  • @DrVenkman9

hahah yeah, i noticed that too, he says "anything" in a different tune than the album version :)

  • forget the beatles! this is the smiths... And i luv them to death!

  • oh how i love this song :')

  • i'm still here

  • i've played this video, like 20 times today.

  • there is a brief video of Jeane with Sandie Shaw on vocals. you can find it here on youtube.

  • Do any oof you know if there's a video of Sandie Shaw performing this song (or Jeanne) anywhere in circulation??

  • Who the hell is Boon?

  • Boon used to work in Managing Dep in Factory Records, when the smiths was having contract with.

  • Does anyone one know the guitar chords for this song... they are no where on the internet only the bass tab, which is underdeveloped at that.

    Much thanks in advance

  • I noticed Morrissey almost never sings songs from this album in his most current shows. What an extra delight if he would...

  • yeah it's my favourite from all the smiths albums also

  • One of my fav. Smiths songs!!!!!

  • What an incredibile song... Love it!

  • The only regrettable thing is that the camera guy apparently didn't think Johnny Marr was important enough to film. He's almost invisible on this video. Too bad, we only get a glimpse of him and his beautiful Rickenbacker guitar

  • Wow! This bootleg is of incredibly good quality. I remember the boolegs I saw in the late 80s were all very poor quality. Thanks for posting this. And thank you youtube!

  • absolutely incredible

  • I agree with some of the previous comments - I've like the Smiths since '83 when i was 14 and my brother got the first album - this one's stood the time test - it's got true feelings envoked and remains as good now as the first time i heard it 24 years ago - proper lump in the throat!

  • my favorite smiths song

  • Someone throws a flower on Morrissey's head. LOL. =)

  • Did I really walk all this way

Just to hear you say :

"Oh, I don't want to go out tonight" ?

"Oh, I don't want to go out tonight"

    :]

  • I love this song, it's one of my favourit.

  • wonderful and beautiful song. Mozzer doesn't sing this one anymore. I don't think they did played this song post 1984. Too bad. Great guitar work and exquisite lyrics.

  • incredibly greatful... :)
