If he were clinically paranoid, he would be paranoid about more than suspected affairs. Of course back then, not only did they have ineffective or harmful treatments for mental patients, they didn't have marriage counseling (like these two needed badly!)
And I think I can see that Louis Trevelyan is living in that somewhere with a woman (Maria as they called her) available with him (both alone, with the child)... ????
It seems that in so many of these Victorian melodramas the bourgeois townspeople are depicted as shallow, vulgar, pushy and pretentious unlike the honest yeoman farmers below them or the more secure gentry and nobility above them. The French family's parlour is so showy and tacky compared to the other interiors (also much more feminine) Both the set and costume designers did a great job with the nuances of class distinction in Trollope's world.
And that moment when she asks him if she loves him is like the best he's been the entire film. John Smith, you don't fool me.

I think Bella is coming around to the fact that she didn't win anything with Gibson.

It didn't bother me at first that he never says a word, but now it does.

She loves her husband more than he does her - she has far more to forgive than he ever imagined he did, and she does it so readily.
