amphipods , ur tank is well oxyganated m8 , the size of amphipods is an indicator or oxygen availability
if ur crab spawns she'll find a strong curent spot , lay up and back and u will see her almost grabing her eggs and spreds it to the curent in a 90c angle , u want be guessing of anything else u see the eggs pop out of her
@Rix750 G'day. While I agree they look like copepods in this video, I can assure you they weren't :)
Its difficult to see in the low res video, but the newly hatched fry were coming out of the hermit's shell. It was sort of "pumping"(for lack of a better word) them out in waves.
You must have one hell of a environment there, buddy, for them to breed like that! Congratulations. Too bad keeping hermit crab babies alive is impossible (so far!)
mine are doing this as i speak!!!!! but the 2 in question are stuck togeather. i only have 2 so i take it the male and female are stuck togeather, but hundreds of baby 'fish' are flying everywhere.
That's awesome. I think it's a great compliment when anything in your tank is comfortable enough to reproduce. They all get eaten or sucked up in the filter, poor little guys. Such is life I guess.
Yes it is my pet, she, and many others live in my 75Gal reef. It would appear that it's not impossible to breed them, the hard bit is keeping the babies alive. I imagine most of them get sucked into the filter and those that don't, get eaten! As for how she spawned, I guess the video speaks for itself. Thanks for commenting.
so is she your pet? how long have you had her? Did the "babies" survive? how did she spawn? i read a video saying its imposible to breed them. You need some kind of amoebas or something for the babies to eat or i think it was some kind of rock material that has some special kind of minerals anyway can you answer all those questions.
Thanks! I have no idea what species it is actually. The colour in the vid, though a little distorted, is not far from its true colour, so I'm of the opinion it's probably not a blue leg. Thanks for taking a peek.
Me neither! It was just a bit of good timing, and a lot of luck to catch her. Otherwise I'd still be none the wiser as to where the tiny fry came from. Cheers.

Actually what you are seeing in the video is a type of copepod. They are very common is salt water aquariums. They normally come out at night.

Not that I have seen, as I said most of them get sucked up by the filter, and the rest probably get eaten.

I did forget to mention, I've had this crab for about a yeaqr I guess. I got about 10 of them when they were teeny tiny little fellas.

Wow, can't really get much more validation that you're keeping a good tank than that. :)
What species is it? Clibanarius tricolor ("blue-legged hermit")?
