  • Good review. That background music is real annoying and seems out of place.

  • can u use this to record ur own songs

  • i really appreciate your review, i have zoom h2, and i wonder how big a difference betwen zoom h2 and zoom h2n really is...wheter is worth buying zoom h2n over zoom h2?

sorry for my bad english, and thanks in advance!

    cheers.:)

  • @slodrum If money is tight, then stick to the H2 - it is excellent and perfectly adequate. The H2n looks prettier, and has a few extra, but not essential features (apart from maybe the dead battery memory buffer). Also the H2n can not be operated using a mains adaptor (the H2 can)

  • Well done!

  • This is a really good overview although I was hoping to see a comparison to the h4n.

  • Great review. Thanks! I have a H2 and after seeing this I don't see any reason to upgrade except it's prettier! lol

  • but i heard you can change it after you record it, if you record in raw, but i am not sure how far the editing capabilities are

  • I think Zoom though there would be a lot of people upgrading from the H2 to the H2n so that's why they didn't include the accessories, but made them an optional kit.

  • that 1 person who didnt let rick changer there filming life D:

  • Rick, thanks so much for the unboxing video of the Zoom H2n. I'm about to buy this recorder, but I wanted to ask a question before I do: is it possible to connect the H2n directly to a video recorder (with a 1/8 inch cable) and essentially use the H2n as a stereo microphone? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • @MyDogWally Not sure, I think the only output from the H2n mic would be via the headphone socket - if you can adapt your leads to work with that configuration, then i guess it'll work - but might take some trial and error to get the recording levels right.

  • i made a cover using the zoom h2 check it out

  • Nice review, thanks Rick. It sounded like a nice clean signal when I turned my headphones up. I have the zoom H4 which I use for ambient recordings but I have noticed when on battery, there is a minor high pitched hum - a bit sine wave-ish, it's quite subtle and only noticeable when I'm recording really quiet stuff with lots of mic gain. Does not appear if I run it from the DC in (!). Have you heard any noise or artifacts in the H2? (I couldn't hear any on the vid...) Cheers - John

  • @quedecree I can't say I've noticed anything like that on the H2. The H2n doesn't appear to have a power-in socket so it's 100% battery operated.

  • @rickvanman if you plug in the USB cable but don't select either of the USB modes the device switches to USB power automatically.

  • @itsalexjones ah thats worth knowing - thanks for the tip :o)

  • @quedecree Hi! I just bought this new H2N and was very disappointed because of this high pitch tone. I`m gonna send it back :( I own the previous version (the H2) and it works fine. Shame. I really liked this new one... David

  • @DavidTitera I've also now noticed the treble is quite high on this mic - my last recording wasn't very good on it but i'm still experimenting with my editing settings -

  • Good video. The sound quality is quite good for a combined device. Didn't seem to be any noticeable reverb when you had it set to omnidirectional which was interesting in the wooden room. There didn't seem to be any latency when you were monitoring time, though I'm not sure whether that is analogue monitoring at that stage... unless you corrected that or synced with software later.

Interesting gadget though. Are you getting younger or is it the longer hair that does it?

  • whatever happened to your softboxes?

  • hi,thanks for your helpful vids.

i have a question and i,ve been searching the internet to find the answer.

i wana know what exactly does the h2n do as a usb audio interface?

if i connect it to pc can I have access to all of the ms track(s) and x/y tracks(or line-in tracks simultaneously?

please tell me about it's latency, how fast it operates as an A/I?

  • I own both the H1 and H4n. Both are very good. One is dead-simple, and the other is more for using in a mini recording studio.

  • DOH lol

  • I finally just purchased the H1 (wanted the H4n), and the H1 has been working as a microphone amplifier for my RODE lavaliere. in my case the H1 is mounted on an articulated arm (watch?v=-A8DTz_Z-dg&hd=1), so there is no handling noise, and the audio is the same as the old H2, and a much cheaper case with fewer options. The "N" series of zoom seems to be well worth the added money, due to the professional features in an affordable package.

  • Yay, film-making stuff!!

  • When you started unboxing it felt a little like Christmas time LOL! Then when you turned on the microphone I jumped. It startled me. Wow, what a difference in sound. I can hear the change in sound as you turn the microphone from left to right. It's noticeable. I guess the question is whether you think the changes to the new microphone are worth the extra money (not including the missing microphone cover, stand, lead). If yes I guess the extra money is worth it. I look forward to the next review.

  • Check under the taped end of the inide packaging, I would bet there are some wire attachment cords under it. Where the H2n was sitting in the packaging. I always miss those "secret spaces" when opening something new.

I could hear both my speakers for the first time, the minute you turned your new recorder on! Boy, I thought they were dead, but I guess I have only been on bad sites all this time. Speakers work great from here! Thanks you for a great video!

  • Ah, looking at getting something like this rick - this was very useful - great sound quality! Can you plug a lavalier mic into this and use the zoom to record from that? If so, any advice on a good lavalier (tie clip) microphone?

  • i want to punch you in your ear

  • Thanks for doing this Rick, I must say it looks the part, I also could tell as soon as you started to record, the quality is excellent, and I like the left right ear sound. Side mics. Mmmm may be going to amazon I think.. LoL. Cheers Rick. Paul :-)

  • You do your unboxings the wrong way round dude. But good video!

  • Could you recommend the cheapest place to get the zoom h2. Cheers

  • I do like the H2 but like this one it's really light in weight and I also thought that it was cheaply made. It's a brilliant product though and I'm really pleased with the recordings I've done so far though.

I hope that you manage to get good use out of the new H2n.

  • When I was looking at quality recorders a few months ago I was torn between the H2 or the H4n and I went for the H4n in the end. Zoom recorders are excellent for the price. Maybe I should have waited for the H2n, looks like a great recorder. I wonder if Zoom will now bring out the H4n II now.

  • My H2N also worked well as a USB mike recording directly in to Audacity. I like the mic sensitivity thumb knob. The build quality is good and the buttons and general construction seem solid. A USB cable should have been included. It uses a very common USB cable (5 pin). I have a number of them that came with other audio devices. The H2N has 4 small rubber nubs on the bottom and stands nicely without a tripod. Audio quality is excellent. Very long battery life (see below).

  • i have a h2 too. cool device

  • You should definitely wear headphones listening to this video. I must admit it made me a bit dizzy at the end when you were turning the recorder back and fourth. LOL It sounds fantastic Rick. Have fun with your new toy. (8^{>

  • The new H2 looks sweet! I have the 2nd gen H2 and love it. I too was expecting it to have a little more weight to the device but it does not affect it's operation. 20 Hour Battery life? Ya we'll see about that. My H2 gets 4-6 Hours out of top quality batteries.

  • @vwfoolwhy My H2N came in 2 days ago. Yesterday I did a battery life test with some well used, NiMH 2300 mAh AA batteries. I had previously bought and returned a Zoom Q3 (the non-HD model). The same fully charged batteries only lasted 70 minutes in the Q3. Yesterday's test of the H2N recording mp3 format at 192 kps using these same NiMH batteries, fully charged, resulted in 17 3/4 hours of recordings before the batteries died! So the claimed battery time seems legit.

  • Sweet,I have been looking into Microphone's like this for about 2 to 3 week's now,Not sure as to what to get TBH,I have narrowed it down to either the Zoom H1 or the H2,The reason being is that i just got a new canon Ixus 220 HS & i want to use an individual Sound Source when i'm out and about to help cut out the Wind factor when filming on location,So the review on this new Mic is very welcome indeed,Thank's Rick :)

  • Nice bit of kit :)

  • Sounds pretty good so far rick

    bernie

  • Nice audio recorder! I'm familiar with those!

  • it looks and sounds good, I have been meaning to buy the H2 for some time now do you think its worth buying the H2 or paying the extra for the H2n?

  • I actually am wanting to pick one of these up! good review , Rick!

  • I'm 3rd love ya vids

  • I have been looking at the H2n. Thanks for Sharing!

  • I am soon ordering this. I just got the H4n and its amazing!

  • When I first saw it, I thought that round part on the bottom was an xlr input and I got excited for a second. I think it's worth saving up a little extra for the H4N.

  • Could really tell a difference when the new mic was on. Now I will have go get one.
