My Father opened up suddenly and said he and the men of the Younger Tiger Taskforce SAC waited to hear this long roll. They maintained no routine schedule on scrable alert / wait - to bomb the empty jungle usually. Then again, my Father refuses to listen too closely, as his eyes said that is.
i served with the 101st in vietnam all of 1970 i have seen men killed by rockets mortars and gunfire but the crulest thing i ever saw was not done in vietnam or in the heat of battle or by an enamy trying to take a human life but by two doctors working in one of the largest hospitals in tulsa together they let me know what gread and crulty was all about for more info please go to [msbones 1950] a aslow death or awaitng grave
It was a real thing over there. Sad we lost so many lives. The radio never told us about all of the protesting and riots going on from the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King.
The long GOOOOD morning was too distract us from reality.
ive just started annoucing the bulletins at school, me and a buddy are trying to make it more enthusiastic and what a piece of inspiration this is, and the movie
my dad and uncle both told me stories about hearing this every morning my dad did three tours and 4 of my uncles did 2 one of my uncles was on his 3rd but was wounded so he got to leave, but they all said the first time they heard this they busted out laughing
This all actually started in 1915 during the first world war, the then radio announcer Peter Stantony used to say gooooooooood morninnnnngg London before he sent his Morse code signals over to the UK from France my Grand Father Was that said man and told me the story in 1978.
Actually the radio announcer was soft spoken and never yelled Gooooooooooooood morning Viet Nam. It was a simple and short "Good morning Viet Nam". Not like show biz would have you think. AFRN rules at keeping it simple.
actually he did.. there is an interview with the guy on the dvd of good morning vietnam, he said that he did not do that in the beginning but after a while he started do do that, but the gi's didnt always liked it:p when he left the guys after him would still do it that way, so the gis thougt that cronauer was still on the air while he was at home:P he would still got fanmail
For the record, the voice is neither Chronauer nor Williams. It's Don Fox, formerly from Hollidaysburg PA, now living in Rochester NY. He (I) did the show from January tthrough October 1967. Trust me, the recording is real.
i was in Danang in 68,on my second tour,Bravo company used to listen to this all the time.
We used to turn it up so that we couldn't hear "Charlie" being tortured!! death cards all round to this one!!! gunner-thompson..reg line1968-Nevada Company.
Our company arrived in-country and landed on Bien Hoa in December 1967 and then went to Cu Chi for one month's orientation. About five minutes to six the next morning someone in the hooch turned on the radio where we heard a chaplain give a five minute sermonette. Then at exactly 6 AM, we all heard G-o-o-o-o-o-o-d morning, Vietnam and just cracked up! Was he serious? Anyway, we all looked forward to hearing that every morning when we could, as well as all the terrific rock tunes from the states.
I read an article by Adrian Cronauer and he said, that if he did half the stuff that was depicted in "Good Morning, Vietnam," he'd still be in Leavenworth prison.
because it IS amazing. even I could hold a note for longer, but how different was that for it's time? 15 seconds of 'OOooo'? had a movie based on it, radio announcers to this day still use that single phrase for inspiration. amazing!
A little bit a trivia: In a DVD interview the real Adrian Cronauer talk about how he came about the "Good Morning Vietnam" phase. It was something he did in Crete when he came to the studio late and needed time to get organized. But Crouner strentched out the "Good" whether then a rising cresendo as Robin Williams did.

Good Idea to have something that annoying on first thing in the morning. After that, the soldiers would already be in the mood to kill.
