John Fred is a perfect example about what is wrong with the mass media's perception of rock and roll. Look at a partial list of the great, great, great R&B-inspired rock classics he recorded, including Off The Wall, Shirley, Can't I Get A Word In, AcHenall Riot, Hey Bunny, Boogie Children, Dial 101 and She Shot A Hold In My Soul, to name but a few. But what does the mass media call him? A one hit wonder who made novelty records. Absurd! John Fred was a giant of rock & roll. He is greatly missed.
@MikeBlitzMag Well, "giant" might be pressing it a bit, but I agree with you: Fred should have been a bit more than a minor star with one hit. I love the whole Agnes English LP.
I was here this night at Christmas time at the last time John Fred performed in New Orleans. He was there with Clarence Frogman Henry, Jean Knight, Vince Vance...What Memories,
and sad to say, Dale called to tell me not long after that John Fred had passed away.
Heard "Shirley" once on the radio in the pre-YouTube era, and wondered about it for years. Thanks for posting!
