Andy Leftwich is FANTASTIC. We just saw & heard him June 21st at the 33rd. Huck Finn Jubilee in Victorville, CA WOW, WOW unbelievable. Not mention Cody Kilby
There's this crazy thing about the internet. You can claim to do or be anything without a single iota of evidence. Look up any video of Olympic events and dozens of people will post comments claiming to be world-class athletes. Similarly, a video of a good fiddler gets a claim to a National Championship title.
Good to see ole Wild Bill's still tearing it up on the guitar. I haven't seen him in a long time. What a great rhythm player and a great all around guy too!
Nope, you're right, I don't know much about fiddling other than the fact that I'm a national champion. I do know that you're a coward that can't respond directly to me. By me saying for him to stick to bluegrass doesn't mean I don't like his fiddling at all. I enjoy Andy's playing very much but I don't like his texas style breakdowns because back when this video was made, he didn't have control of his bow arm. He does nowadays however.
I won't go into technique and explain to you why he doesn't have control of his bowing arm in this video because frankly, you wouldn't understand anything I'm talking about. So next time you want to comment to me, grow some balls and hit the reply button.
So ID yourself. I could claim to be O'Connor, but I'd still be a struggling fiddle hack. I'd like to think that a "national champion" would have more class than you show with your usual negative comments. Mama said "if you can't say something nice..." - Barry Collins
Someone without class to me is someone who lies blatantly. "oh you did a great job" (when he didn't), "oh you have nothing to work on" (when he does). That is the passive crap I will never partake in. If me saying what is on my mind and speaking absolute truth unclassy to you, then you're are one person I care less about impressing.
Why is it that some folks have to be critical of a great fiddler's bowing arm, hand position, facial expression? I certainly couldn't care less. Most bluegrass musicians haven't taken lessons and have simply learned from listening to the music and taking a stab at it. (like me) I'd love to play like Andy Leftwich and have terrible technique all day long.
Andy was a contest champ long before he was playing bluegrass. He won Winfield in '97, putting him in the company of Randy Howard, Mark O'Conner, Jeff Guernsey, Ed Carnes, Alison Krauss, etc.
haha, I get negative points for making this comment? some of you people are idiots. The National Championship is a prestigious fiddle contest, the World Series of Fiddling is a prestigious contest, the Grand Masters is a prestigious contest. Winfield is a prestigious Guitar contest, but not fiddle. Again, some are in denial of the truth.
They get negative cause they can't play fiddle as good!

Great fiddling at such a young age. You have to watch some Heifetz videos to see a bow arm that high.

This is an extremely interesting tune, that I have heard from very few fiddlers. -If- you can find it, Van Kidwell's cut of this tune is fantastic.

Byron Berline played it on "Pickin' and Fiddlin'" with the old Dillards

Winfield isn't a prestigious fiddling contest. Its a good one, but not a prestigious one.
