Finally liked/favourited in on YT. Had this on tape for ages,The Second Thoughts version is in many ways superior to Mental Notes, though both are unique. This version of TFAC is the best, for the epic climbing guitar and the better vocals. Heard this first on the double album compilation from about 88 or so. Better production thanks to Manzanera.
Don't agree there...Second Thoughts was by far superior in production and btw they had the same songlist amended,t with Late Last Night & Sweet Dreams added!!
Bang on, although I am getting to like the original. Second thoughts as it was later known brings back so many memories of 1976 and all that! I met Phil Manzanera at The Borderline with Tim Finn in 1988 and he came across so humble, just a great bloke!
Oh ok Phil, it was harder, at my time to get hold of would you believe it, certain sounds in the land of the long white cloud, i introduced a few to the genius but all they heard was Queen, lol, all the best.
Judd/Tim Finn combo is true brilliance - this album produced by the great Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music and Eno. Maybe we need to start a movement for a Reunion to play this album/mental notes again live -, I'm sure between Australia and NZ there be a lot of interest !! Starts here now with your "thoughts"
@sydneyindie Just read they were booed off at Melbourne Festival Hall in the 70s. Very interested that Eno and Manzanera were behind this giving "permission." Yes Mental Notes was true inspiration before the Aus/Kiwi tall poppy machine brought them into line. Nothing they did subsequently made me sit up and "take note" like this album except perhaps Tim and Eddie Vedder doing Stuff and Nonsense. Shows the value of US cross pollination,,, if that means reunion I say aye.
Oh! My... Thanks! FOR POSTING THIS: I haven't heard this song in 14 years. (I have the cassette lying somewhere, after moving.) That piano and explosive guitar riffs...still sends shivers down the spine!!
@ampallang7 I think what you listened to was the NZ album version. When they went to the UK, it was reproduced with a few changes to the song list, and different production. That UK album was called Second Thoughts (quite apt) instead of Mental Notes.
@madphilgreenballs THEY WHERE 2 COMPLETLEY DIFFERENT ALBUMS THAT SHARED A FEW SONGS BUT WITH DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS...MENTAL NOTES BEING FAR AND AWAY THE BETTER PRODUCT....THATS JUST MY OPINION BUT
@santanocci Don't agree there...Second Thoughts was by far superior in production and btw they had the same songlist amended,t with Late Last Night & Sweet Dreams added!!
