  • he was not a great conductor, and not half that much a pianist

  • Juste extraordinaire, le meilleur.

  • Oh my. This is amazing.

  • Oh the amazingness of Bernstein.

  • Who knows, maybe that's exactly what Ravel wanted ;-)

  • lol at the 'pick up' motion he uses at 1:14 on the 4th beat.

  • @#$%%^&*

    CO za kicz !!!! = WHAT a shit !!!!

  • 2:04 - Get some, bassoons!

  • Yes, they don't make ballsy pianists like this anymore...

  • I can only compare this to martha argerich's freedom, joy and reckless abandonment within total control. Bravo maestro!

  • When Leonard Bernstein sees Presto, he really thinks presto, doesn't he? XD

  • Do any other piano players who watch from 1:52 just go...

    O.O!

    Damnnnnnn.....

  • omgg what is this! hahahah

  • That poor, poor bassoon @ 2:04....=(

  • @Clarinet4Life1 I'll say! That part is written out on 2 bassoons originally. I wonder sometimes which is harder <_<

  • @nyc11104 before saying anything, I would like to see Argerich conducting The Rite of Spring and composing an orchestral piece, then we can talk about who understand and catch better the spirit of this piece and who express more. After watching this Argerich's performance is like a machine without passion and without brain.

  • @honron21 Even there isn't alot of wronge notes ^^

  • He looks so happy lol, what amazing performers!

  • Simply orgasmically amazing! The best recording in the world of this!

  • this is badass! love the wrong notes :)

  • GRANDE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • THIS, IS... EPIC :| x

  • 4:25 WHERE IS THE PIANO??? O.o

  • Stunning performance by a world famous orchestra and conductor

  • hahahaha mov III its sooo funny, and he looks like a cat in 3:40

  • that's right at 2.27 he plays on the low register the high cords........ and viceversa

  • Stupefacente!!!

Di che anno è questa esecuzione?

  • Non avendo il CD che ne è stato tratto no so dire con certezza, ma dovrebbe essere stato registrato alla fine degli anni '70.

  • Ok, grazie, immaginavo...

  • there's an obvious problem with that video, everything goes too fast, not only while performing but also when he rises in front of the public. No one can discut the tempo here as the recording is very bad!!

  • Hmm! Not all conductors should try to be serious pianists. I guess.

    Berstien is/was a great conductor.

  • Bravo!

  • wow brett "kevin dixon" wilcots

    Peace

  • Think bernstein may have played this so presto so it would not be the perfect little piece but take on new meaning. Lightening striking twice in the same place.EXCELLENT.

  • 1:10

    Ravel is playing the horn!

  • Yeah, he looks like Ravel xDD

  • LMFAO!!!

  • cheeky bugger

  • @Cumul0Nimbus

    Oh my god ! :-O

  • @Cumul0Nimbus LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Cumul0Nimbus Is it really ravel? O_O

  • @whneo97 you made me laugh so hard, i almost had to pee... check up on the dates of ravel's birth and death! and then check the date of this recording!

  • @mortalfrog0815 Then tell me the date of the recording, which apparently isn't stated here.

  • i love how he just jumps and stabs all over the keys with his left hand. its fantastic. he's so spirited

  • Bravo! Bernstein was so charismatic! A true artist not only because of being a great musician but because of everything he had to share to audience!

  • It is so refreshing to see a raw performance of this piece. I've never seen this performed faster, and, despite the wrong notes, I've never seen this performed better.

  • everytime i watch this i get goosebumps - such an amazing performer and interpretation. Forget the occasional wrong notes on the keyboard....why isnt this recording on compact disc!!!!!????

  • I love this simply because it is SO wrong! No one would have the balls to play it that fast these days. It's frantic, splashy, littered with mistakes and the orchestra is constantly playing catch up, but it's such fun!

  • I'd have the balls to play it this fast! Though I'd hit about 2% of the notes, and I think I'd better not.. oh well. you're right, it seems ;)

  • @chamade16

True! Some pieces are about fun. And thats exactly what you get from this! Some people play things too fast just to show off, but with Bernstein you can tell he's just having the time of his life!

  • @chamade16 you can't really be mad at him... playing the piano and conducting the orchestra at the same time... kinda tough

  • @chamade16 Agree about the catchup, and Lenny's contribution has probably literally 5,000 blue notes in it.

  • Ravel: joie de vivre!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:05 Lol at bassoon solo. Damn O_O

  • Wonderful!!!!!!

  • the mixture of ravel, bernstein, and an orchestra is purely amazing....

  • He's brilliant, but I hear wrong notes at around :22. But I won't deny that he's still a freaking genius.

  • In my opinion, it takes a true genious to conduct and play perfectly at the same time.

    It's multi-tasking to the extreme!

    Amazing!!!

  • perfecto....

  • The great thing - is at that breakneck pace - you can see the similarity between Gershwin and Ravel. I love the Ravel line when G wanted to study with him - "Why be a second rate Ravel, when you can be a first rate Gershwin?"

  • I can do THAT :D

  • Lenny was on somthing. He kicks ass on the piano. The greatest!

  • Bernstein, you are my GOD.

Please, compare this version with that by Larrocha-Lopez Cobos (with Cincinatti, also on youtube). You will understand the difference between to be a decent music maker or to be an ARTIST. That's all.

  • he's so... so.. so awesome!!! I'm thrilled!! XD

  • There is no one who can fill this man's shoes...........BRILLANT, love his nose

  • goodness, is that horn player sergiu celibidache??????? it's just identical!!!

  • Invincible

  • conducting and playing piano at that pace to that standard... what a monster

  • Agreed, something closer to a Divine Creature, monsters make mistakes, but gods like that man, do not :)! Amazing piece!

  • haha luk at 1:10s hair :L

  • Ravel is playing French horn???

  • wow what a tempo, he's like a lion... he was really pushing that orchestra... poor bassoonist that is really hard what he had to play at that tempo,it came off great though!

  • Is there no end to this mans brilliance ...peerless!

  • Ma come si fa a suonare e a dirigere il concerto di Ravel???

    strabiliante, davvero stupefacente.

  • x100 more exciting than any pianist!

great conductor and pianist, what a dream!

  • Bravo to Ravel & Berstein, what a great performance.....

  • great performance. pity about the video/audio synch problem

  • handsome man

  • ¿Cómo es posible tocar así de bien?

  • Practicando

  • Magnificent!!

  • He's quite genuinely charming when he conducts so playfully in between his piano parts.

  • Outstanding performance! I love it!

  • spectacular!!

  • Such an unbelievable brilliance!

  • Exciting! Thanx!
