hello classical music fans, i've written an in-depth analysis and commentary on each movement of ravel's piano concerto in my blog, based on this video/performance. see my blog at asiyclassical, wordpress, com .
@nyc11104 before saying anything, I would like to see Argerich conducting The Rite of Spring and composing an orchestral piece, then we can talk about who understand and catch better the spirit of this piece and who express more. After watching this Argerich's performance is like a machine without passion and without brain.
there's an obvious problem with that video, everything goes too fast, not only while performing but also when he rises in front of the public. No one can discut the tempo here as the recording is very bad!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And while you're all praising this speed-freak, please do notice that with such a rushed tempo, that poor fucking bassoonist just 'stabs' at whatever notes he can manage.
Think bernstein may have played this so presto so it would not be the perfect little piece but take on new meaning. Lightening striking twice in the same place.EXCELLENT.
@whneo97 you made me laugh so hard, i almost had to pee... check up on the dates of ravel's birth and death! and then check the date of this recording!
It is so refreshing to see a raw performance of this piece. I've never seen this performed faster, and, despite the wrong notes, I've never seen this performed better.
everytime i watch this i get goosebumps - such an amazing performer and interpretation. Forget the occasional wrong notes on the keyboard....why isnt this recording on compact disc!!!!!????
I love this simply because it is SO wrong! No one would have the balls to play it that fast these days. It's frantic, splashy, littered with mistakes and the orchestra is constantly playing catch up, but it's such fun!
True! Some pieces are about fun. And thats exactly what you get from this! Some people play things too fast just to show off, but with Bernstein you can tell he's just having the time of his life!
The great thing - is at that breakneck pace - you can see the similarity between Gershwin and Ravel. I love the Ravel line when G wanted to study with him - "Why be a second rate Ravel, when you can be a first rate Gershwin?"
Please, compare this version with that by Larrocha-Lopez Cobos (with Cincinatti, also on youtube). You will understand the difference between to be a decent music maker or to be an ARTIST. That's all.
wow what a tempo, he's like a lion... he was really pushing that orchestra... poor bassoonist that is really hard what he had to play at that tempo,it came off great though!
he was not a great conductor, and not half that much a pianist

I can only compare this to martha argerich's freedom, joy and reckless abandonment within total control. Bravo maestro!

When Leonard Bernstein sees Presto, he really thinks presto, doesn't he? XD

@Clarinet4Life1 I'll say! That part is written out on 2 bassoons originally. I wonder sometimes which is harder <_<

Di che anno è questa esecuzione?

Non avendo il CD che ne è stato tratto no so dire con certezza, ma dovrebbe essere stato registrato alla fine degli anni '70.

Hmm! Not all conductors should try to be serious pianists. I guess.

@chamade16 Agree about the catchup, and Lenny's contribution has probably literally 5,000 blue notes in it.

In my opinion, it takes a true genious to conduct and play perfectly at the same time.
It's multi-tasking to the extreme!
