How do they know that there's a genetic/biological brain component or cause? Can they compare one brain to another and see deficiencies or abnormalities?
@fireiciclespark Schizophrenia is an Axix I diagnosis. It can be helped with medications. BPD is an Axix II diagnosis. There is a HUGE difference. Do your research before commenting. It has little to do with depression.
@toolluvr81 "BPD" doesn't exist in medical science.
It exists as a quackish pseudo-scientific label. I recommend the brilliant book "A Dose of Sanity" by Sydney Walker III MD as a perceptive critique of how far psychiatry has departed from real differential diagnoses since the 1940's, "Axis 1" *or* "Axis 2" notwithstanding.
@fireiciclespark It doesn't exist in a medical sense but still could be useful as a term to describe a cluster of maladaptive personality or character traits which can be treated by forms of talk therapy.
@jonahfox But the symptoms of BPD may be being caused by a medical condition. There's no substitute for deductive differential diagnosis. Otherwise you may be trying to treat someone's tumour/metal toxicity/hypothyroidism with talk therapy.
Also, who's to say what is or is not a maladaptive personality? This is a collective negative social bias voted into existence as a "condition" by a show of hands at the APA.
@fireiciclespark I am unsure if there is evidence which suggests that the symptoms or traits associated with BPD may be caused by non-psychological factors. Any good medical professional should however be aware of any confusions which may arise and still apply a differential analysis. It is up to the patient to decide if they would like to treat any personality traits that they find to be maladaptive or problematic. Categorization may aid this process.

There are masses of it. Categorization may aid it... how?
@fireiciclespark I admit I don't know an incredible amount specifically about BPD. Can you point me to some of the known or empirically supported factors that are suggested to cause BPD. If you assume that BPD at least has a significant psychological component then the identification of BPD may aid in treatment through the suggestion of its possible etiology which suggests a therapeutic approach.
First Bonding. Second Theory of Mind. ToM becomes difficult if pre-verbal emotions (affects) are burned in. Regulation is not all and I love conferences with the title: "Education, Creativity and the Mind." Fonagys nonlinear communciation is OK but communcation third order is what advertisers called: "neurons fire together!" It is hard to explain but relative simple: be creative with your child - not only on christmas. I love Gregory Bateson: "Metaloge with his daughter!" Wishes to O.K.
It is pretty much accepted by researchers at this point.

Sounds like Psychiatry's excuse for failing to treat depression successfully.
Orthomolecular Schizophrenia cure rate = 90%.
