For the idiots at large, this a jet car, having turbine engines from usually a jet fighter and is classified as a car by the Land Speed Association as having four wheels. Rocket cars on the other hand use solid or liquid fuels like The Vanishing Point rocket car driven by the late Sammy Miller(RIP). It used Hydrogen peroxide H202 with a catalyst.

A comparison of a road car to the SCC or even the Vanishing Point is like a Piper Cherokee to an SR71 Blackbird....Ridiculous!

I was there at Black Rock with my son and witnessed this amazing event. We were standing in front of the run and saw it come towards us - the car made the playa ripple in a line on each side of the front of the car as the speed barrier was broken. We then heard the Sonic Boom that then echoed around the mountains. Once in a lifetime experience! Best thing is I grew up in Coventry and was there visiting when Richard was speaking about it at the Coventry museum!

Yes indeed - the shockwave the car was pushing forward and outwards pulverised the desert floor. The power needed to do such was staggering - everyone thinks it was just needed to push the car along. I have a friend who worked on Thrust SSC and Thrust 2 - I must go to Coventry Museum next year as I understand they have both cars, the Jaguar Firechase and the proto-type Mini used for suspension/steering design in there. I envy you having been there when the record was broken!

David the funny thing is I watched that car brake the sound barrier 3 times when I was in high school, and it's not powered by rockets like you say its two rolls royce jet engines. It happend 85 miles north of Reno. And all they have to have is four wheels.

No, nor are regular racing cars like the F1's and so on. A street legal car needs to meet millions of requirements, emission rates and security things, and many of these have a severe impact on achievable performance. The Veyron is the fastest serially produced car, closely followed by the Koenigsegg CCR/X. But what's the point of those anyway since you still need to head for a racetrack to see what they are able to do, you might as well buy a dedicated racecar and go even faster.
