  • man, I can't believe I found this. The shadow scene freaked me out when I was a kid and I never met anyone that knew what show this was.

    THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!

  • Hay, people, do you think there's a book after which this cartoon was made? :)

  • I've been searching for this for thousand years! :'D You gave me back my childhood... :') Thank you!

  • Where can I buy a dvd copy of this, been looking for this for years I loved this story.

  • where do i get a dvd version from?

  • najjaci crtani jebote

  • Help!

I'm having a real bad flashback of the 70's!

  • @shobie2000

    You mean the 80's XD

  • @sweetvegan74

    You Meant The 90's.!!

    This Movie Produced In 1999.

  • so they need a mortal to fight the shadow but one of them goes with him... I guess they can be in the same room but not kill him

  • The only shame is that the pronunciation of the Irish names is so awful - these are very beautiful classic names from the Gaelic language, and they've butchered the pronunciation. Oisin is Ush-een, and Niamh is Neeve, not Ni-am. I'd have loved this much more if it wasn't for this...

  • I remember this from my childhood! :D

  • I loved this all my life, and am now watching it after so many years, thank you!

  • "Tush!" I was lookming for Faeries 1999....

  • @gloriac141 I found a link of the whole movie if you want it :) :) Only problem is taht it seemed so much prettyier back when I was 5 years old. Different... but hey!

  • @gloriac141 Ah I need you accept me as a friend to give you the link.

  • @lioncircleantilope

    Sorry such a delayed reply ><" Accepted~

  • Awesome! Haven't seen this in years, since I was a kid!! I just bought the book today. I used to have that as a kid too. It's come full circle. Thanks for posting this.

  • ATTENTION FANS: Up for auction is an original drawing of Oisin battling the Shadow.

  • I believe I'm right but, I'm hearing Frank Welker June Foray and Linda Gary as some of the voices

  • @dorourke105 it took me a while before I could hear Linda Gary in some other cartoon works! Nice ear!

  • Fairies have also been known to enchante people walking through west Hollywood....

  • I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR YEARS!!!! I used to adore this <3

  • @Jonnyjuke dude.... likewise!

  • Need Sco'ish accent, but this is awesome anyway.

  • this is trippy

  • OH THE MEMORIES!!!

  • i was tryng 2 find a different fairy movie but i cant find it :(

  • I remember this. good animation.

  • Whoever posted this video: Thank you so much! I have been wanting to see this animated production AGAIN for some time, but I did not even remember its title, let alone where to find it. THANK HEAVENS FOR YOUTUBE AND ALL OF THOSE WHO POST ON YOUTUBE!

  • What I want is the full lyrics of 'How About A Kobold Stew?' The characters talk over the singers, making the lyrics unintelligable for some parts. I'd love to have the full thing.

  • Thank all the heavens above! I have been searching for this for God knows how many years and only today after a decade have I found it. You have made my childhood dreams come true!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!

  • WOW!! I've been looking for this movie for years!! I saw it as a child and I just remembered the flashbacks! As soon as I saw the name it came flooding back to me! Thank you so much! :D

  • I am getting an actual cel and sketch of the show. It will be the part where Oisin and the Shadow do battle. Wow. Just Wow!

  • Niamh and Oisin's names completely butchered!!!

  • noooooooo way! i can't believe i found this! i remembered the commercial for it but i never could remember the name of this! and it's a Brain Froud animation! wow! ^_^

  • That must be a cobalt they have..no shit

  • Bless you!!!!!! I've searched for this movie for years. The only time I've ever heard about this movie was from watching trailers on my old Rikki Tikki VHS. I've wanted to watch this since I was a young child, and now, as an adult, I have found it!!! THANK YOUUUU!!

  • I loved this used to watch it as a kid where can i get it on dvd for region 2 ive found a vhs for region one

  • Oh!! I'm going to make my family watch thisssssss!!!! The animation is so old though.

  • This cartoon is responsible for me being an artist

  • How closely was Brian Froud involved with this?

  • @MythicDude

I don't think he was personally. The creators got permission to use his artwork from the book. I love this show and they did a good job with the characters.

  • This was my very, very first movie which I "owned". I was born in the late 80's so the original was a bit before my time but my parents recorded it on VHS for me and gave it to me ( it aired on TV waaay past my bed-time) when I was really young. I'm giddy w/ nostalgia! :3 Thanks a million for the upload!

  • very Brian Froud indeed for the style of faeries and illustration, this is actually better, alot better than the book Good Faeries, Bad Faeries, and World of Faeries, especially his credit card faerie, feel like he was trying to make faeries a religion.

I love the symbolic meaning of this story of changing power of unseelie to seelie during Winter Solstice, when the night finally stop growing longer.

  • The animation is in a style very similar to Arthur Rackham.

  • This reminds me of Lord of the Rings..

  • love it, where can i get this?

  • God, I miss the 80's. Kids nowadays are missing out.

  • SCORE!! I love this cartoon!!

  • the heo kinda looks like heman!

  • Whoa really? Thanks for telling me! ^^

Do you know any good sellers?

  • @kristalcarolyn

    ebay and amazon

  • Wow, this is brilliant!

But, hey, do you know the 1999 movie called 'Faeries' with Kate Winslet? I can't find it anywhere, and I really want to see it again...

Can anyone, anyone, please upload it?

  • @kristalcarolyn

You can buy that on DVD or VHS now (-:

  • @kristalcarolyn i've been desperately looking for that one everywhere but its very difficult to find

  • thank you for this! how magickal.. i never before heard of this~* -~AuRoRa

  • omg!!!!! iv been loooking for this everywhere!!!!!!! i watched this when i was lil we had it on vhs hahaha i want it on dvd tho. where did you find it?

  • Welcome to my world! I went crazy looking for a copy and found a VHS finally! If you want a DVD send me a message!

  • @liljoblue20

me too and I hate to watch it in black and white too LOL !!

  • Two out of three of those hags are clearly voiced by June Foray.

  • Loved the bit where the mushrooms transformed into fairies and danced.

  • This is a very good movie, I didn't watch it again since I was in a younger age of 4 and 5 because (4:45 - 4:50) this scene gave me nightmares for over a decade for being so scary?

  • This is so good to watch high.

  • does anyone remember the Pied Piper on one of these *specials*? I can't remember what it was called or if there was a book it was based on

  • CBS story break it was from I think

  • I am crying right now because I have been trying for months to remember the name of this movie and find it!!! This just brought back so many memories of my childhood!!! Thank You!!! THANK YOU!!!!

  • Woh ho, I thought I'd hallucinated this when I was a kid. Good to know it DOES exist! XD

  • wow, where you find this? was it on tv?

  • @leonestloveless

    Got it transferred to DVD

  • OMG! Niamh is an Irish name (my name btw) it's not pronounced NEE-AM it's pronounced NEE-UV (MH or BH in Irish is pronounced as a V if it's in the middle or end of a word! Also Oisin is pronounced USHeen NOT OHsheen! haha so funny

  • @Niamhels1 OMG XD ikr? im irish and my bro's name is oisin and everyone calls him usheen here but when im out they call him ohsheen lmao

  • when was this made?

  • 1981 I think

  • Wow.... been looking for this movie forever.... only saw it once as a kid and loved it

  • I've always loved this show!

  • hey does anyone remember the cinderella video that used to be like this? it had music similar to the intro credits on this vid, it was a cheap looking short film, with the ugly stepsisters, it stated off zooming into the castle, can't remember much apart from the distinctive violin music i would love to see it again if anyone knows the name or can upload it :)

  • Hmm, there was another cartoon film, also with the name Faeries, but with a different story, and starred Kate Winslet. That's the one I'm looking for.

  • look on ebay, you'll find the dvd there :)

  • @Dirtfire Oh my gosh, yeah that was great too!

  • OH MY GODD! i had this on an old video I found in my house when I was a wee boy! this is the first time i've watched it since! even though its 20 past 4 in the morning haha!

  • I've never heard of this movie.

  • I just had a thought about "red caps" today at work, I'm really glad this exists, and I didn't imagine it as a kid.

  • I have been looking for this for ages and ages, although now I'm a little put off that they definitely mispronounce Niamh's name. But they managed Oisin, so I guess I shouldn't complain. :\

  • was this made by the same people who created the "He-man" and "Shira" cartoons? the characters look and sound the same...

  • Who ever reads this, I love you, just because I know your like me.

  • Aww.... *warm hugs* .. the feeling is mutual, Kindred spirit. ;)

  • this movie takes me back to my childhood :D

  • @SuckAmother13 do u know that cinderella animation by any chance? it was creepy and had similar music to this(like the music on the intro) ive been searching for it for ages, it started off with zooming into a yellowish castle with violin music...

  • this is just awesome. The animation is great and i love the voice acting. I was just a kid when i seen this and remembered the shadow monster ever since.

  • Glad you are enjoying it. The Shadow always fasinated me as a kid too. I think he was well animated and detailed.

  • ah I found it!! Thank you so much I've been looking for this for decades :D

  • the music is magic as well as the animation.

  • I can't believe it! I had the Faeries book when I was a kid, I had only a vague recollection of there being an animated special and volia! Here it is! This is amazing! Thanks!

  • I have been looking for this everywhere! Thank you for posting!

  • Your welcome! I have it on DVD if anyone is interested. (-:

  • hey there i'll be interested in getting that dvd by the way, ill probably send payment next week at some point( when i get paid hehe) just to let you know! :)

  • Thanks a lot for posting this. I hadn't seen it since its original airing in 1981.

  • cum mortal.

  • Err ... not that kind. She said COME.

  • what an ugly group of faeries. yuk. arent they supposed to be cute?

  • Cute, beautiful, ugly, they run the gamut. However, I think budget and technique did not do the fae justice. I'm sure with some rescripting and a lot of CGI it'd rock.

  • this was made during the late seventies, this is very adavanced for that time....

  • they have no true form, they just take forms of nature, not everything in nature its sparkly, beautiful, in the human sence, or colorful....

  • I remember seeing this as a little kid, and it really made an impression on me. It was really difficult to find this online.....

  • this came out almost 30 yrs ago. like late 70's early 80's. I was a kid when i saw it. It was a cbs special. Brian Froud did the artwork to the Dark Crystal

  • He did the concept work. Wendy scuplted the models.

  • anyone else notice the smurfs with wings dancing in the faerie circle?

  • brian froud also drew the designes for the goblins in the 80's movie the Labyrinth!! my fav movie!! lol

  • its my fav too and Willow as second fav :)

  • Brian Froud is my favorite artist I never knew he did this! Thankyou so much!

  • i used to watch this all the time when i was younger! that was like around 15 years ago!

  • Like many here, I, too, saw "Faeries" when it first aired. I thought it was lost forever until I found it here. Thanks for posting! Blessed be!

  • Wow, I can't believe I finally found this! I haven't seen it for almost 20 years and I had no idea that it was based on Brian Froud's work--makes sense though, since it scared me so much when I was little. It holds up surprisingly well, actually. I like how it's pretty true to actual traditional spooky faerie folklore, instead of being the bland, kiddie-fied stuff, you see today.

However, it is a shame that nobody bothered to teach the actors the proper pronunciation of the Irish name "Niamh".

  • I have fond memories of this as a child, but now that I'm older I see what a crappy hack job this is of the original book's darkness and strangeness . Find the awesome illustrated book by Alan Lee and Brian Froud. It's always in print.

  • My poor, spooked mom wouldn't let me watch this show even though I ALREADY saw it as a kid.9_9

  • Can I just say that this is such a trip to see his drawings come to life? Even if it's crappy animation, it's so great!

  • Sorry for being late to the party, but I had NO idea that there was an animated story after he made his faerie book! CRAZY!

  • I saw this only once when I was 5 or 6! And the only reason I'm seeing it here now at the age of 32 is I posted a question on a web site describing the only image that stuck with me all these years: the battle with the shadow monster when his claws rip three bloody streaks into the hero's back. Very scary for a little kid! Everything else was forgotten, although the scene when they row in the boat was like remembering a dream. Very cool.

  • oh man!!!! Same here!!! Thanks for posting brings back lots of memories!!

  • same! that scene stuck with me.

  • Thanks zendolin. I was looking for this movie, and the only thing I remembered was the shadow and his claws ripping the heroes back. I found yesterday what must have been your blog post a while back describing the same thing, and someone replied to that post saying what the movie was. Then i found it here! The shadow monster gave me nightmares for years, it's great to see it again for the first time since I was 5...

  • oh wow i don't think i ever saw these. it'd be strange if i remembered something.

  • I never ever forgot that little transforming satyr! XD

.....And why is the king resting his hands all over those goblin butts...

  • ohmygod! I've actually spent YEARS searching for this online, because I could never remember the title properly. thank you SO MUCH for the upload! it's a shame kids cartoons nowadays just can't hold a candle to the older stuff.

I remember watching this at my friends house and being so scared of the shadow demon-thing haha.

  • Yeah, Hans Conried gave the Shadow's charactor such power.

  • I love it!!!!

  • cool. have not seen this since I was really young. loved it. the lake always intrugued me with the inexplicable rising falling rock formations.

  • Someone beez trippin teh shroomz!!!!111 LOL This is hilarious stuff!

  • what is that creature at 08:36 to 08:38

  • looks like mongor from the thundercats

  • That's beautiful. I just love Brian Froud and Alan Lee's "Faeries"

  • look up Jennigirlts on photobucket to find my cel, and production art collection from the film.

  • Couldn't find it. Can you send me a link?

  • i love it!

  • This looks just like my backyard everytime I eat Shrooms

  • OH MY GOD! My favorite childhood cartoon! Last time I watched it was 15 years back on VHS! Thanks so much for uploading it. :-) Does anyone know where can I download it for free?

  • Thank you so much for putting this up!!! I used to rent and rerent this on video all the time when I was a kid. I thought it had been lost to time. They just don't make stuff like this anymore

  • This was my favorite growing up. Your right you just can't see these classics anymore.

  • Not to mention the animation and music are also great.

The scene at the end where they're cooking the kobold remains of a similar scene from the Hobbit with the 3 trolls arguing over how to cook the dwarves.

  • Yes your right on that one!

  • Ahh, thank you so much for this upload. My siblings and I watched this all the time when we were little. My dad taped it off the t.v. ages ago. I was going to dig it up and try to upload, but the quality wouldn't have been nearly as good.

    Thanks again. I missed this.

The voice acting, especially on the Shadow, was great.

  • Your welcome. My mom taped the show for me when it was CBS. I ran that taped ragged! Later I purchased an original vhs and put it on dvd so I was able to get it on youtube.

I agree Conried did an awesome job. I love the part where the Shadaw says "How dare you." to the RedCaps and the part where he notices Osin and Puck the first time "Well, Well. What do we have here.." Love this show still do!

  • I know all the creatures in this film are from myths and ledgends, but I don't know all of them, so could someone please list all the creatures in the order they are seen or mentioned? Please.

  • Woa too many to list LOL. Your best bet is to buy or borrow the book Faeries by Brian Froud. You'll see them all in there for that is where the creature designs came from (-:

  • Where do I get that?

  • Uhh, book stores? Ebay or Amazon (-:

  • Thanks, I think.

  • It's a popular book. You'll find it right away.

  • This is priceless!

  • Wow! I didn't know the Dark Crystal guy did animation!

Thanks, I'm a nostalgic animation lover.

  • He doesn't, it was done by a different company they just got permission to use Froud's designs and charactors. One of my favorite cartoons growing up.

  • Reminds me of Legend actually!

I like the way this is a more litigate (I guess you might say) look at fairies, more like the myths say then, say, greeting card fairies, more true to the alien nature of fairies :)

BTW: Any news you know of The Power of the Dark Crystal?

  • No news yet but I am so anxious for that movie to come out. That and Alice!

  • Lol. Oisin is a dip.

  • omgggg. I love this movie. I have it on VHS my sister and I used to always watch this. Thank you so0o0o0o0o much for uploading this. <3333
