How To Check Your HOSTS file for spyware...

Ok, I got all the way to the end. The web site being blocked is not listed under the local host. Instead I have this ::1 localhost

Do I delete this? Thanks any help would be great.

mine says something different that this is a generated file and it doesnt have any ips or websites on it

ok so i've been through this with the host file before, here i am again. but now when i get to the host file and click it doesn't open, and say this file does not have a program associated with it,please install a program...? any help would be appreciated

OK, so I have a GIANT list of random websites (mostly poker and porn?????).... Sorry if I'm slow at this, but I'm cautious- what do I do next? Should I delete them but not the IP or....? Do these block viruses? I'd be eternally grateful and I'll give you a cookie!

@mattsme what anti virus do you use? it may have created the list for you to block known spyware websites

thanks this really helped... my list was so long and it was full of virus checking website such as norton etc (probably to stop me from finding it) thank for this video i can now use pay pal / amazon which are this i WANTED to get on to.

scanned it and found no viruses with norton antivirus 2010. seems legit. very nice of you to share this :)

I have had this problem for well over a year and this actually works. the list of sites was far down the page so at first I didnt think this was any good. scroll notepad down!

One thing about the HOSTS file. If there are malicious sites in that list, don't panic. This is used to block these websites from accessing your computer, I know this because a list of 5000 malicious sites were added to the HOSTS file by Spybot S&D.

i have the same prob it has a bunch of stuff saying inserted by stopzilla and the ip is the same as the local host in the sample file but there is no local host listed in the other host file the local host is only listed in the sample file i have no firewall just anti virus an antispyware so is it a good thing to have them there or a bad thing because if it is a bad thing then y did stopzilla get a award from cnet?

if its mostly porn, you can leave them, the hosts file can block good sites and bad sites, like 3mp3ror said "there are sites that offer a host file that BLOCK major spyware sites ", sometimes its a good thing, especially if your antivirus/spyware detector/firewall is adding to it, just scan over it to make sure common sites like google, youtube, myspace, etc... are not in it or any other websites you enjoy going to

That actually helped me alot. I hate it when people say Firefox is the solution to all spyware problems, because it isnt. Spyware was affecitng Firefox as well. So thank you, in helping getting my computer a little bit cleaner.

That empty host file is the default one but I use the one at http://www.mvps.org/winhelp200­2/hosts.htm and that way I stay away from certain sites that are probably ad related, with spyware and so on.

Oh and anyway I use firefox. Much more flexible and reliable than IE.IMO.

So for those of you that use IE visit that site and get yourself a PROPER host file.

I'm a firefox user & IE HATER myself and yes i know of the spyware host files, i reset mine to the default so i could show it as an example on how the default host should look, i made this video because someone was having trouble accessing yahoo.com and the host file might've been the problem, im going to show him the spyware blocklist at a later date though
