John Woodhouse is HILARIOUS throughout this whole part! I love his knowing little looks at Emma, who's clearly very uncomfortable, and meanwhile Elton's oblivious hahaha.
Okay Okay ladies, now we know we have had a Mr. Elton somewhere in our life. Where he worship every move you make as you walk, but just to be next to a Mr. Elton make a women feel werid and uncomfortable. ( I don't mind this mr. elton) Enough said. Be careful when being friendly to a Mr. Elton lol
poor Mr.Martin :( These actors are amazing. their facial expressions. its like i feel what they're trying to conve:) oi vei! i love Mr. Knightley by the way.. and Emma.
I. FREAKING. LOVE. EMMA! Omg, I'm unhealthily obsessed. This is my favorite movie EVER. AAAH! Everything is so perfect. JLM/Mr. Knightley is just flawless and I happen to be somewhat in love with him (: Romola Garai makes the BEST Emma, exactly how I visualized her. Oh god, I'm such a dork, but I LOVE period dramas so very very much. :D
I don't remember John Knightley as being so disagreeable in the book. I love him, but he's quick to get annoyed with people. He snapped at Mr. Woodhouse, snapped at Mr. Elton, and continually snaps at Emma.
@ithungers I loved Knightley and Emma of the movie. Knightley had a most appealing manner and way of speaking and way of being quiet and Emma, Gwenith Paltro, was much more genteel and more likeable. She was more forgivable and polite.
@bocatsmom Don't get me wrong. I love the Mr. Knightley in this movie and Emma. I don't like how disagreeable his brother in this is, though. I also love the Mr. Knightley and Emma in the movie. Gweneth Paltrow is always amazing. But I do think that the Emma in this movie is good too. She's more faithful to the book.
@ithungers LOL, you would be cranky too if you had five young children running you ragged, and everyone telling you what they should or should not do :)
I wish I had seen this first, because although I've never read the book, I like how explanatory this version is. I really like the Gwenyth Paltrow one and feel the actors had a better and clearer chemistry. I really like this actress in Daniel Deronda though, she is a great actress, but I think Gwenyth is a better Emma. I think the other actors did well in their other movies too, but altogether, here.... I'm not feeling it.
@Ayumura96 it's due to how adorable he is in Mansfield Park as Edmund Bertram..He defiantly is annoying in this movie but I still think the actor is good looking!
oh man... etiquette and good manners were kinda extreme in those days eh? if i had missed the story like emma did, i wouldnt stand there looking distressed as mr weston walked away, i'd dive at his legs yelling REPEEEET
One thing I like about this version is that Mr. Knightly doesn't look creepingly older than Emma. There is still a big age difference between them, but he still has a full set of hair. xD
I love this adaptation! This is my third time watching it, and I just can't get enough of all of these actors. Pitch perfect, in my opinion. Supporting cast is brilliant, especially John and Isabella. Thanks so much for posting!
I love the scene with knightly and Emma where Emma is complaining that knightly would not arrive in a carriage. Knightly has a good point. Plus his horse is called Bessie!! It's a pretty horse. I love horses
I really like this version-what a treat-thank you-bbc movies/series are on Masrerpiece Theater here in the states-has'nt been on yet-did'nt even know about it-till I looked here ;-)
I must say, Mr. Knightley's speech about coming to the party on a horse was a great addition. Emma's snooty reaction, however, was not. The last thing Emma would ever be of Mr. Knightley is ashamed, and she'd never forget herself enough to pretend to be so.
The scene with Mr. Weston trying to tell Emma about Frank was like a poor immitation of the Gwenyth Paltrow version.
Maybe it was the way she delivered the line, then. I have read the book, but you're right; it's been a while. I'll do some more research and come back to complain more intelligently later. ;)
ah, I like how this Mr. Elton is totally oblivious to all of Emma's comments about Harriet and how he pesters her at the dinner party...I love Mr. Knightly's speech to Emma about how a gentleman wants to come and go as he pleases and not have to send a day ahead for the carriage...I'm so glad they kept that form the book
It's remarkable how unattractive Mr Elton's personality makes him, because physically, the man is gorgeous.
Thank you so much for posting this series! I am having the best time watching these episodes, it really is much appreciated indeed.
