He let a 70 foot slapshot by Jacques Lemaire get by him in the second period to narrow the score to 2-1, Chicago.
The Habs tied it up later in the second period to set the stage for Richard's game-winner in the third period.
In college, I watched the CBC broadcast and remember Bobby Hull ringing a shot off two posts when the Hawks were up 2-0. By a matter of inches, the Hawks lost the Cup.
If that shot goes in, the Hawks, up 3-0, never lose.
this is very curious; as a ardent hawks fan in that era, i've never seen this. i heard it on the radi with lloyd petit andharvey wittemberg. the presenter/ announcer isjim west whom i would see on road games that weren't blocked for chicago.
I remember listening to this game on radio, I was 15 years old. I also remember the seventh game against Montreal, a heart breaker losing 3 to 2. To this day Bobby Hull says that game still hurts, and it's forty years later. We always listened to the games on radio, with the late great Lloyd Pettit broadcasting the games. You would swear you were at the game, he was fantastic. I'm 55 now, and those years were so exciting, the 60's and the early 70's.
This is awesome! For years I've been looking for the original broadcast of game 7 between the Hawks and Montreal. All I find is the NHL film footage. I'm sure the folks at the CBC have the original broadcast in their vaults somewhere. Go Hawks!
Hull's goal was shorthanded as Mikita was in the penalty box.
The Rangers came back to win the sixth game at the Garden in triple overtime on Pete Stemkowski's goal.
In the seventh game, Hull broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period on exactly the same type of goal, off a faceoff. The Hawks added an empty-netter for a 4-2 clinching win.
Three of the games went to overtime, with New York winning game one, 2-1 in overtime.
In fact, the Rangers twice led the series, 1-0 and 2-1.
Instead, it (as were Games 3 and 6) carried by CBS.
However, the CBS broadcast was blacked-out in Illinois (except the extreme southern part of the state which was within the St. Louis market), all of Indiana, Wisconsin and most of Iowa to protect a closed-circuit TV showing of the game in theaters.
I hope you do! I so remember this playoff year. First a sweep of the Flyers, then 7 games vs the Rangers, and the loss in Game 7 to Montreal at the Stadium.
Tony Esposito was the goat in game number seven.

WGN did not televise Game 7 of the 1971 Finals.
