  • this song really bring good memories for me dam i was young but very mature for my age at that time i was soo into sade iwas only 13 years but had the mind of a 25 year old

  • She is a queen

  • I think sade has the best lyrics i have ever heard

  • smooth music with African drum beat to this track after hearing this i think i'mma catch some ZZZZZZ *growling*

  • Hello All:

It's been more than twelve years since i've been listening to Sade. I must say that her music has been the perfect theme songs to certain episodes in my life.

When i heard this song at age 12, i wasn't sure what it meant but years later, i now know. Since I know what it means and understand it, it sounds even better to me.

    G'Day

  • On s'en lasse pas j adore

  • Sade's parents were married and together when she and her brother was born so it had nothing to do with an unplanned pregnancy but rather with the fact that her grandmother did not want her white daughter having no kids with no africans/ black men especially nigerian. Her grandmother had the 1930s mentality that interacial marriages and babies are not a good idea. Now if you read sade's bio, you will see that though her mom ran off to africa with her dad, they eventually broke up and moved back.

  • I HEARD THIS SONG IS ABOUT HERION CAUSE THATS WHAT SHE USED?!

  • The song is about the birth of an interracial baby, the grandmother's horror/disdain, but the mother's recognition that the child is a good and a gift.

  • The term "Tar Baby" referencing this song (the lyrical content) has absolutely NOTHING to do with skin color. Tar Baby refers to a "sticky situation" = the sticky situation is an unplanned, unexpected pregnancy...."Grandma came to see something she could not believe, how could her girl (granddaughter) be so naive, tar baby, tar baby told the secret she conceived". The story of "Tar Baby" Br'er Rabbit (Uncle Remus stories) is the story, but it also has roots in African and Native American culture

  • @wildnpeacefulme ..... exactly !!

  • HAY "KAY19833".....SILLY, NO LIFE, RACIST BOY.....GET A LIFE AND QUIT TROLLING AS A MEANS OF INFLATING YOUR EGO, SADE IS ABOUT LOVE OF THE HUMAN RACE, HER BREATH-TAKING BEAUTY COMES FROM DEEP WITHIN (SHES VERY PRETTY ALSO) AND HER EXISTENCE ON THIS EARTH

HAS ENORMOUS MEANING, HATE CONSUMES ALL WHO HOLD IT IN THEIR HEARTS JUST DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR HUMANITY EACH DAY AND SOON YOU WILL NO LONGER FEEL THE SELF-LOTHING WHICH EATS AT FIBER OF YOUR SOUL, I WISH YOU WISDOM ,TO SEE YOUR FOLLY

  • Isn't this song autobiographical?

  • Or is this song about her boyfriend at the time , who was from the caribbean, he had beautiful dark skin with dreds,,,Which is maybe why Sade is wanted in Jamaica for a traffic violation and authorities said she would be arrested if she ever returns. And i guess Sade's grandmother who raised her on rural England farms couldn't believe Sade's boyfriend was so dark, and referred to him as "TAR BABY"

  • my favourite part of the song was from 0:00 to 4:00

  • Is this song about the most beautiful african baby she's ever seen in her life; the beauty of this baby and its beautiful dark skin just captivated Sade so much,,,she had to right a song about it...?

  • We need more woman like Sade, real and good music.

    Not like now,lady gaga

  • This song moved me so much off the Promise album... It came like a breath of fresh air, because the album was really quite sad. Good nonetheless, but this song was refreshing. AHHHHH!!!

  • those two that dislike this song are probably INSECURE pale Hillbilly boys! buahaahaaa!

  • Out of all of the amazing songs on this CD this one just seems to really transcend borders and time. It has an African feel, a Caribbean feel, a Latin feel, an Egyptian feel, amazing smoothness.

  • Sade has a very limited vocal range, but her music comes across with so much class and style, you hardly notice. I know I would thoroughly enjoy her live and in concert, it would make for a very relaxing evening.

  • Sade The Impress of LOVE... the only relationship therapist I resort to for comfort well you and a couple glasses of red wine

  • Tar Baby e Cherry Pie, as que eu mais gosto.

  • How can anyone dislike this song?

  • one of my all time favorite songs! My favorite overall singer as well. Thank you lindamartina.

  • Damn! Me again...just caught another lyric for post-partum depression..." ...out of the pain come the best things..." Hang in there stressed out mammas....

  • I had the worst post-partum depression with my second child. This song was like a beacon...as my son was so beautiful and perfect...and I couldn't appreciate it...."With that big old smile of yours, you turn the wind into a song, how could I have doubted, Honey it's with me that you belong..." My baby is now 6 and I still sing this song to him...He is wonderful!! How could I have doubted, indeed!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG AND ITS ROMANTIC

  • I haven't heard this in so long I forgot it was my favorite song

  • I LOVE YOU, SADE

  • such an incredibly beautiful song

  • F.Y.I.

"Sade" is the name of the group. The lead singer, often mistaken as Sade is Helen Adu.

  • Not so accurate, her reak name is:

    Helen Folasade Adu

    SADE(FOLASADE)

  • Wikapedia does such an excellent job on bios, If you like what you know about Sade now, visit her bio and you'll really love this woman, and buy the DVD, it's a fertility tool.

  • Wikipedia, because it's an "open source" encyclopedia, can't necessarily be dependent on, though I agree, Sade's music is definitely baby making music.

  • Odd, that you question the reliability Wikapedia when your own post about Sade being the name of the group is so far off base. Wow, go figure.

  • Is Sade not the name of the group? Wow. You're a dick for no reason, which shouldn't suprise me. It's typical of a two bit "know it all" . Your life is obviously empty and the extent of your authority is forged in your meaningless posts on Youtube. I stand corrected...You're a sad dick.

Since it's that important to you to appear smarter than me, a step in the right direction would be to spell Wikipedia correctly.

  • sade is the group. sade adu is the singer! you never hear sade and...... so shut the fuck up fag

  • What the fuck man...you make the point about Sade being the name of the band, but you back it up with some stupid shit by using the word "fag". Why couldnt you have been smart about it?? Why sink to name calling??? I highly doubt Sade herself would ever use that word. And just as a side note, the band does go by another name, Sweetback, they have two really great albums out of thier own.

  • Thank you. Well said.

  • True that.

  • @TheThighWhisperer Her middle name is Folasade, hence Sade for short!!!

  • Tar-Baby was a doll made of tar and turpentine, used to entrap Br'er Rabbit in the second of the Uncle Remus stories. The more that Br'er Rabbit fought the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he became. In contemporary usage, "tar baby" refers to any "sticky situation" that is only aggravated by additional contact. The only way to solve such a situation is by separation.

  • CALITEX4 is right. This is a song is about a woman who has a biracial baby. Pay attention to the lyrics.

  • Thanks for that...I'd often wondered about the significance. Admittedly not to the extent that I went away and researched. But thank you for your elucidation here.

  • Sade new album?! Hurraaaaaaah !! :D

  • OMG when? I love Sade. When is new album coming out?

  • Sony has announced Sade new album to be released 2009!!!

  • cool! cant wait till it comes out!

  • I can't wait......

  • Song is about heroin "don't be naive"

  • This song has NOTHING to do with heroin. You need to look up the lyrics. This is about her life as an interacial child.

  • krystalxlyte: I'm European from Spain and I agree with you. I'm also a Sade fan and I don't believe in race differences. It's different races but one world we live in. Black, white, chinese and still we are all the same, just human beings. Long live the world, one world! Also, Sade is tops!

  • Please keep posting her songs!

  • The secret she conceived. Tar baby, Tar baby. I love you so. Like a brand new play. Cut into my life. Tar baby, my tar baby. Maybe it was ment to be. With your magic. Out of the sky. You cut into my life. Dont you know that. You could turn the wind into a song. It's with me who you belong.

  • as an african american and a sade fan this song is so healing living in today's eurocentric society that still doesnt quite appreciate diversity and ethnicity seems to only find being anything but ethnic and diverse as a standard of beauty success ect..

  • Some parts are about her mother and her grandmother finding out that she was pregnant with a "tar baby"

  • it is about her birth and the heat her mother had to deal with, having a "tar baby" and all

  • you sound foolish if that was the how could sade classify as a tar baby in its implications? she is very light skinned! listen to the lyrics again.

  • you don't know what she was called while she was in the womb. A "tar baby" makes a lot of sense considering her father was a tar complexion and her mothers family wasn't so happy to have an interracial child being brought in. I know of people who live IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD as Sade, who are close to her and heroine is FAR from anything she would be addicted to. Actually she was appalled when she found out that fans got that from the message in this song. I had her neighbors tell her, THANKS

  • The truth is i can interpret the song how i see fit .. i love sade but this song in it's lyrics speak of heroin and it's effects. listen again buddy.

  • yes and as a songwriter and poet myself I can interpret it my own way... And I view Sade as very honest considering many people I know have met her on personal basis'... "the secret she conceived," "how could I have doubted, honey it's with me that you belong," "Tar baby..." You digging deeper than you have to but it's ok, your entitled to your own opinion. We can agree to disagree, and get along as fans and celebrate her album that's coming out this year. It's being mastered in Paris right now

  • No YOU sound foolish, this song is in no way about herion what so ever! People its about a bi-racial baby "tar baby" is a term for any child that is darker than a white baby not just dark skinned black folks...u know Sade's bi-racial duh!!! her mother is English & her father is Nigerian. Don't take the word " Tar" literally!!!! "tar baby told the secret she conceived ..............

When I look at you I can't believe my eyes.......... It's with me you belong" Heroin really???

  • Now you really sound like a idiot " a term for any child thats darker than a white baby" no wrong again that is a racist term directed at blacks . so your telling me any child right? that means mexican, chinese, irish russian, indian. etc.. all fall under the term "tar baby"?i don't think so!

  • I agree with you 100%. I could not have summed it up any better.

  • People its about a bi-racial baby "tar baby" is a term for any child that is darker than a white baby not just dark skinned black folks...u know Sade's bi-racial duh!!! her motha's english & her pa's nigerian.

  • This song is my story. I'm the Tar Baby. :)

  • Learn the difference between "your" and "you're."

  • lol

  • OOOOoooo shit, somebody got schooled lmao!!

    -00Stoic!

  • well evita here in Malaysia, those who are mixed with other races oftenly produces very smart and goodlooking kids... its a fact...

  • Does anyone know if this song is about teenage pregnancy? The first verse seems like it, but the rest of the song doesn't...

  • Some of you folks seem to have totally misunderstood that person's previous comment about Sade's delivery being off-key. I've always thought that Sade's pitch is a bit flat; listen to "Smooth Operator" and "Sweetest Taboo"--she's undeniably flat. However, it may just have to do with her slipping into some cool jazz mode at the end of phrases. Regardless, this is one of the things that makes her utterly unique (and altogether adorable).

  • Mr."P",

What you obviously don't understand is that no one "said" anything to comprehend. The communication was "written"... ?comprende? Meanwhile, get a life!

  • you came into my life......

  • I love her so much. I'm 40 now and am wondering what happened to her. Sade- are you still alive darlin'?

  • just another classic from sade...only 24k views, wow! People really dont know.

  • You are soooo right. This is one of my favorite songs. Love her.

  • Mr. "coleon8" : perhaps your hearing is "off key". Shame on you for comparing the "Smooth Operator" to Cher. Sade's golden voice is both unique and inimitable among the world of fine vocalists today. It has been my pleasure to have been alive during her lifetime. Musically, she is always "on-key". Clean the wax out of your ears and even you may agree.

  • he wasn't commenting negatively on sade he was commenting to the comment before his. you went thru all that for nothing. foolish. he wasnt referring to cher either... lol.

  • Mr. Gonzales, what's the "P" for? Could it stand for "PRICK"? Who are you to know what someone else was commenting about? Perhaps you read the comment that I was commenting on out of sequence. When you play "Big Brother" for someone else know what you are getting into. Meantime, MYOB.

  • ok ill mmob, not because you said so, but because you are an idiot and you obviously cant comprehend what's being said. cher.... lol. idiot.

  • The first time I heard this song I was scared because it was talking about black people, but now I love it

  • Listen closer to the lyrics for the true meaning. This is about a white girl who gave birth to a biracial child. "Grandma came to see something she could not believe. How could her girl be so naiieve..."

  • sade=autobiographical=eternally beautiful
