I saw a video on Galileo Extreme, a show on CBS Prime, India, where they demonstrated that a cell phone CAN cause a fire at a Gas/Petrol station(a German Gas station setup). I cannot locate the video on the internet. If you can, please share!
@GildedWildebeest Maybe your wallet is still in the car. Here in Germany, for example, we have virtually no "prepaid" style gas stations, you always go into the shop to pay after you've filled up. You see people going back into their cars to fetch their wallet a lot.
@GildedWildebeest Many pumps use to have the locking tab, where you could go away and the pump would automatically stop once the tab was let loose. So customers could go back in their car and talk, go to the washroom etc... Most pumps in Vancouver don't have that . You have to physically hold the handle.
@kyokemokyo Oh, and just so I make this clear, the reason that a fire would start when the phone is dropped is the petrol vapour. It's heavier than air, and collects round the base of the pump, especially so when the pump is in use.
@kyokemokyo Really? What petrol station? My friend has worked in a petrol station for 37 years. He has experienced over 20 fires, but NONE were mobile phone related.
it is not the fact to have a cell phone ringing but touching the car while on the phone which discharge the static that a cell phone tend to build...I like the "petroleum specialist" comment lol...if he's saying the truth then why inside any petroleum industries they forbid use of cell phones while fueling any vehicle for that exact reason!!!
@stefanirish no, there is absolutely no way this can happen, you just saw the evidence, what can happen is pulling your hands in and out of your pockets and creating static electricity again.
you people amaze me, you like christians in the face of science.
I've watched the whole episode and the phone they tested is only ringing, therefore, not enough radiation, and they only tested it for one time. The enough radiation to ignite or blow up a gas station is an ongoing call. but they didn't because the producers tell them to tell the viewers that false facts..
@wasthat99 I just did the test today myself holding my clel phone over a cup of gasline while a friend called, cell phone was litterally almost against the opening of the cup, I answered, nothing, IT CANNOT HAPPEN jesus do a search, there has never ever been a case of a cell phone causing a fire at a gas pump EVER!!!
@wasthat99 because radiation ignites vapours? then why doesn't the sun ignite all the gasoline in this world? why don't the helicopters and the firetrucks at the ongoing fukushima reactor leak blow up? you're a total idiot
I have worked for BP refinery in the past, there is a list of electrical devices that are not allowed in parts of the refinery due to possible fire. and cell phones are on that list.
@NightShadowPagan ever bothered opning up a gas pump and seeing all the exposed wires? as a matter of fact have you ever wondered how cars do not combust when you flood a carburator in an engine whten the coil (electric) is only inches from said carburator, not to mention the car battery and other electronics? use yer fucking heads people jesus.
funny thing is, when i learned about the discharge thing few years ago, in science class, i'm always discharging by touching something metal like a car. just for the fun of getting the electric shock.
@legomaster615 Well then again they do confirm or bust the myth at the end of this video and others like it not unless if it was a new one. but yeah I wonder whats up with the old clips too...
I remember talking on my cell when I first got it, and was filling up the tank.. my gf at the time, the attendant on the speaker and the person beside me all freaked out on me. I never understood why so many stations had these no cell signs posted over the last few years.. poppycock!
I saw it with my own eyes..... a guy was texting in a gas station and it caught fire
MrWilsonwee1979 2 days ago
these jerks are totally wrong. i have personally seen a fire at the pump caused by a person useing a cell phone while pumping gas.

OMFG, are you all too stupid to realise the obvious?
Its not the radio waves that cause fires!
People drop phones. FACT.
When this happens batteries may fall out, or become damaged. FACT
This may cause static, or in the worst case scenario, an electrical spark. FACT
Obviously whoever did the 'painstaking reaserch' on this show is a moron.
I work in a petrol station and twice in my one year of service has a fire occured due to people dropping their mobile phone whilst filling.
GET OFF THE PHONE!
