a great song of high spirit and determination! Yet still quite melodious! thanks vincentwsl for giving some background info here. Yes, agree if it's eventually uplifted to be China's No.1 National Anthem.
China was bullied by foregion countries for nearly 200 years since last dynasty of Ching especially Britain, France and Japan. They invaded our Motherland by force by economic, by cultures. They tried to make Chinese peoples became their slaves and their markets and tried to make China become their colonies. Our ancestries use their blood to protect our motherland. Today, China is not easy to obtain our position in the world.
to understand "death to those who invade us, and we love peace" and that there is NO contradiction, you must go the root of this song. It was originally created as "march of the people's liberation army" sung on August 1, anniversary of establishment of PLA, who are defender of the nation. That verse states we will not offend or invade other nations but will defend against any invasion. China had been suffering from foreign invasions since 1800+ and ended 1949.
I have advocated for a long time that this song should be the National Anthem, replacing the current "Marching of Volenteer Soldiers" which was a song created during the WW2 to power up China's will to fight Japanese invadeers. Now that it reminds us Chinese suffering from Japanese occupation which should never be forgiven, but which also out of touch of current realities. I venture to predict this song will be new national anthem before 2030. Good to hear this song in 2008 Olympics.
For those overseas Chinese returning home had been in the next 20+ years encountered turmoils hardship and poverty as result of failed communist experiments and internal power struggles of leadership. After 28 years of turnmoil and destructive Mao policies and watching the total collapse of communist Russia, the new policies of Deng and his successors finally come to the conclusion that Revisionism (or Chinese style Capitalism) will be tried to bring China to a new era.
I sang this song in 1950s. Part of the tune come from old folksong of "white clouds of hometown" then adapted with lyrics to praise the rise of communist China. The 5 stars red flag is blowing in the wind. Song of victory loud and clear. Sing to our beloved motherland, from now on marching to prosperity and strength.... Those verses are very patriotic, creating hopes among Chinese people. This song is reponsible for lots of overseas Chinese returning home after 1950.
I would say it's patriotic, not revolutionary. The only revoluntionary part is "people" and "liberation". The third phrase is almost never sung. So you can pretty much ignore the part where it mentioned Mao lol.
I didn't realize the song was so "revolutionary" when I heard it sung by the little girl yesterday at the Olympic opening ceremony. Of course without seeing the lyrics, I hardly understood what was sung.

五星红旗迎风飘扬, 胜利歌声多么响亮;
*歌唱我们亲爱的祖国,从今走向繁荣富强.
*歌唱我们亲爱的祖国,从今走向繁荣富强. 越过高山,越过平原,跨过奔腾的黄河长江;
宽广美丽的土地, 是我们亲爱的家乡,
英雄的人民站起来了!我们团结友爱坚强如钢.
***五星红旗迎风飘扬...
我们勤劳,我们勇敢,独立自由是我们的理想;
我们战胜了多少苦难,才得到今天的解放!
我们爱和平,我们爱家乡,谁敢侵犯我们就叫他滅亡!
